BACKGROUND: Despite its excellent screening effectiveness and sensitivity for breast cancer (BC), digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is controversial due to its high radiation exposure and long reading time. This study examines the diagnostic accuracy of DBT and digital mammography (DM) for BC screening and diagnosis in women with dense or non-dense breast tissue.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: PRISMA-compliant searches were performed on Medline, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane databases for articles comparing DBT and DM for BC screening until March 2023. Meta-analysis was performed u

BACKGROUND: Contrast-enhanced breast MRI and recently also contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) are available for breast imaging. The aim of the current overview is to explore existing evidence and ongoing challenges of contrast-enhanced breast imaging.
METHODS: This narrative provides an introduction to the contrast-enhanced breast imaging modalities breast MRI and CEM. Underlying principle, techniques and BI-RADS reporting of both techniques are described and compared, and the following indications and ongoing challenges are discussed: problem-solving, high-risk screening, supplemental scree

BACKGROUND: Mammographic density (MD) reduction is associated with lower risk of breast cancer (BC) recurrence and may be used as a marker of treatment outcome; however, trends in MD following BC therapies and the factors associated with such trends are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate MD changes following BC treatment and the factors associated with these changes.
METHODS: A total of 226 BC-affected patients who received BC treatments were examined. MD was assessed by the Laboratory for individualized Radiodensity Assessment (LIBRA) software. A Wilcoxon ranked sign

INTRODUCTION: Sex steroids, insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and prolactin are breast cancer risk factors but whether their effects are mediated through mammographic density, one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer, is unknown. If such a hormonal basis of mammographic density exists, hormones may underlie ethnic differences in both mammographic density and breast cancer incidence rates.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study of 270 postmenopausal Caucasian and Afro-Caribbean women attending a population-based breast screening service in London, UK, we investigated whether plasma bi

PURPOSE: The Joanne Knight Breast Health Cohort was established to link breast cancer risk factors, mammographic breast density, benign breast biopsies and associated tissue markers, and blood markers in a diverse population of women undergoing routine mammographic screening to study risk factors and validate models for breast cancer risk prediction.
METHODS: Women were recruited from November 2008 to April 2012 through the mammography service at the Joanne Knight Breast Health Center at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Baseline questionnaire risk factors, blood, and screening ma…

BACKGROUND: The aggressive nature of breast cancers detected between planned mammographic screens, so-called interval cancers, remains elusive. Here, we aim to characterise underlying molecular features of interval cancer.
METHODS: From 672 patients with invasive breast cancer, we analysed gene expression differences between 90 'true' interval cancer cases (i.e. women with low-dense breasts defined as per cent mammographic density <25%) and 310 screen-detected tumours while accounting for PAM50 subtypes and thus overall tumour aggressiveness. We computed an interval cancer gene expression pro

Early-life body size has been consistently associated with breast cancer risk. The direction of the association changes over time, with high birth weight, smaller adolescent body size, and adult weight gain all increasing breast cancer risk. There is also a clear positive association between larger body size and increased breast adipose tissue measured by mammograms, but less is known about how body size changes across life stages affect stromal and epithelial breast tissue. Using breast tissue slides from women with benign breast disease, Oh and colleagues applied machine learning methods to

To determine the efficacy of mammography in the detection of early breast carcinoma at an urban teaching hospital, the results of all breast biopsies performed between 1983 and 1987 that were preceded by mammographic examination were retrospectively reviewed. There were 503 women in this population. Malignancy was detected in 79 cases (15.7%); 21 were in situ and 58 were invasive. Among all nonpalpable malignancies, 53.0 per cent were in situ, while only 2.4 per cent of all palpable malignancies were in situ. An abnormality was found in 374 mammograms (74%), and 73 (19.5%) were malignant. The

Postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) is associated with increased risk of breast cancer. The HTs used in Scandinavia is associated with higher risk estimates than those used in most other countries. Mammographic density is one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer, and possibly an intermediate marker for breast cancer. We decided to examine the relationship between use of different types of HT and mammographic density in Norwegian women. Altogether, 1,007 postmenopausal participants in the governmental mammographic screening program were asked about current and previous HT use. Mammog

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the effects of age, mammographic density, menopausal status, and menstrual cycle on background parenchymal uptake (BPU) using ring-shaped dedicated breast positron emission tomography (dbPET).
METHODS: This study included 186 adult women who underwent mammography and dbPET on the same day and had no abnormalities classified as Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) category 1 on both examinations. The volume of interest (VOI) was placed in the glandular tissue of both breasts, and the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax)

BACKGROUND: Understanding how changes in body mass index (BMI) relate to changes in mammographic density is necessary to evaluate adjustment for BMI gain/loss in studies of change in density and breast cancer risk. Increase in BMI has been associated with a decrease in percent density, but the effect on change in absolute dense area or volume is unclear.
METHODS: We examined the association between change in BMI and change in volumetric breast density among 24,556 women in the San Francisco Mammography Registry from 2007 to 2013. Height and weight were self-reported at the time of mammography…

Telomere malfunction and other types of DNA damage induce an activin A-dependent stress response in mortal nontumorigenic human mammary epithelial cells that subsequently induces desmoplastic-like phenotypes in neighboring fibroblasts. Some characteristics of this fibroblast/stromal response, such as reduced adipocytes and increased extracellular matrix content, are observed not only in tumor tissues but also in disease-free breast tissues at high risk for developing cancer, especially high mammographic density tissues. We found that these phenotypes are induced by repression of the fatty acid

Dedicated breast CT is being increasingly used for breast imaging. This technique provides images with no compression, removal of tissue overlap, rapid acquisition, and available simultaneous assessment of microcalcifications and contrast enhancement. In this second installment in a 2-part review, the current status of clinical applications and ongoing efforts to develop new imaging systems are discussed, with particular emphasis on how to achieve optimized practice including lesion detection and characterization, response to therapy monitoring, density assessment, intervention, and implant ev

BACKGROUND: The incorporation of breast density and a polygenic risk score (PRS) into breast cancer risk prediction models can alter previously communicated risk estimates. Previous research finds that risk communication does not usually change personal risk appraisals. This study aimed to examine how women from the family history risk study appraise their breast cancer risk following communication of an updated risk estimate.
METHODS: In the family history risk study, 323 women attended a consultation to receive an updated breast cancer risk estimate. A subset (n = 190) completed a questionn…

Electrical impedance imaging has the potential to detect an early stage of breast cancer due to higher admittivity values compared with those of normal breast tissues. The tumor size and extent of axillary lymph node involvement are important parameters to evaluate the breast cancer survival rate. Additionally, the anomaly characterization is required to distinguish a malignant tumor from a benign tumor. In order to overcome the limitation of breast cancer detection using impedance measurement probes, we developed the high density trans-admittance mammography (TAM) system with 60 × 60 electrod
