Metabolic alkalosis due to feeding chicks in breeding Adélie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae under natural conditions.

Prolonged abnormal vomiting causes metabolic alkalosis. Many seabirds are known to feed their chicks by regurgitation. We hypothesized that metabolic alkalosis occurs in seabirds even under natural conditions during the breeding season. Adélie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae feed their chicks by regurgitating food for 50-60 d until the chicks fledge. In this study, the concentrations of Cl(-), HCO(3)(-), Na+, K+, pH, and PCO2 in the blood of breeding Adélie penguins were measured throughout the chick-rearing season. The pH of penguin venous blood shifted from 7.54 in the guarding period to 7.47 in…

Deficient sensorimotor gating induced by selective breeding in rats is improved by entopeduncular nucleus lesions.

Deficient prepulse inhibition (PPI) of startle reflects disturbed sensorimotor gating found in certain neuropsychiatric disorders, such as Tourette's syndrome, ADHD, Huntington's and schizophrenia. We here tested, whether lesions of the entopeduncular nucleus (EPN) would improve a PPI-deficit induced by selective breeding. Rats with breeding induced high and low expression of PPI were stereotaxically microinjected with ibotenate (0.2 microg in 0.3 microl phosphate buffered saline) or vehicle into the EPN and two weeks later tested for PPI of the acoustic startle response (ASR) and motor activi…

Inadvertent propagation of factor VII deficiency in a canine mucopolysaccharidosis type I research breeding colony.

Issues of cost and genetics can result in inbreeding of canine genetic disease colonies. Beagles often are used to maintain such colonies, providing stock for outcrosses. Factor VII (FVII) deficiency is a hemostatic disorder found at increased frequency in beagles and has been characterized at the DNA level. Deficiency of FVII presents obstacles in colonies founded with beagles. An initial finding of a FVII-deficient pup from a longstanding colony prompted us to evaluate FVII deficiency fully in this colony. Current and archival records and tissues were used to reconstruct the colony pedigree,…

[Serological examinations for swine vesicular disease (SVD) in a closed pig breeding herd using ELISA].

In a closed pig establishment housing about 18,000 pigs, 2895 gilts were tested pre-export for SVD (swine vesicular disease) antibodies using Ceditest/PrioCHECK SVDV-AB ELISA. 130 gilts (4.5%) tested positive. In addition, 561 animals of this farm were sampled per random for SVD serology. One in 241 weaners (0.4%), eight in 150 gilts (5.3%) and 18 in 170 (10.6%) pregnant sows tested ELISA SVD-antibody positive. Of the ELISA positive samples, 23 tested positive in VNT (virus neutralization test). Of these, 20 VNT-positive animals were re-sampled two weeks later and re-tested via ELISA and VNT i

Immune parameters in mares resistant and susceptible to persistent post-breeding endometritis: effects of immunomodulation.

Our objective was to characterize immune parameters in susceptible (SM) and resistant (RM) mares, with and without artificial insemination (AI) and immunomodulation. Eight RM and eight SM were selected based on their reproductive history and functional tests. Both groups of mares were evaluated during three consecutive cycles: Cycle 1, untreated cycle (control); Cycle 2, AI with dead semen; Cycle 3, AI with dead semen and immunomodulation. Endometrial biopsies were taken during the three cycles as follows: Cycle 1--at estrus, when follicles > or =35mm and at diestrus (7+/-1 days after ovulatio

[Detection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis from the testicles of a clinically infected breeding animal].

During a post mortem of a six year old simmental bull with severe paratuberculosis infection the testicles were further examined by pathological, histological and microbiological methods. No gross or histological lesions could be observed. Single acid fast organisms were detected in smears taken from sterile testicle tissue. Tissue material was additionally cultured in mycostatin culture media and after 8 weeks of incubation acid fast colonies were demonstrated. Polymerase chain reaction with DNA extracted from cultured bacteria and testicle tissue material resulted in M. avium subsp. paratube

Effect of acrosomal defects on fertility of bulls used in artificial insemination and natural breeding.

Four bulls that produced spermatozoa with a high percentage of abnormal acrosomes were individually placed in pens with females for 21 days. Frozen semen from 2 of the bulls was used for artificial insemination. One of the bulls was placed in a competitive mating situation with normal bulls at pasture. First service pregnancy rates were determined by transrectal ultrasonography 28 days after bull removal from breeding pens, or after the last artificial insemination. The results of competitive mating at pasture were determined from breeding observations, the phenotypic characteristics of calves…

A survey of the pathology of marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) derived from a marmoset breeding unit.

The results of a survey of the major pathological conditions encountered in an established breeding colony of common cotton-eared marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) is presented. 265 home-bred and 70 imported wild-caught marmosets were examined. A Heinz body haemolytic anaemia and skeletal muscle myopathy were the most common pathological findings and were considered to be a result of a complex nutritional deficiency involving vitamin E, selenium and protein. Inflammatory disease of the intestinal tract was also a major feature. Chronic colitis was particularly common in older marmosets. Pneumonia…

Genomic architecture of non-nominal offspring risk in a simulated composite cattle breed.

BACKGROUND: Composite cattle breeds are designed to combine complementary attributes from different founder breeds while retaining part of the heterosis generated by crossbreeding. Brangus cattle are nominally defined as 5/8 Angus and 3/8 Brahman, but the same global breed composition can be produced by different genomic architectures. This distinction may be important because animals with the same Brahman ancestry proportion may differ in ancestry heterozygosity, homozygous ancestry composition and segregation behaviour when used as parents. The objective of this study was to use controlled s…

Genome-Wide Characterization of Heterozygosity-Rich Regions in Kazakh Native Sheep Breeds.

Heterozygosity-rich regions (HRR) are genomic segments characterized by high heterozygosity that may arise from admixture, introgression, or balancing selection and may harbor loci associated with adaptation and fitness-related traits. This study aimed to characterize HRR patterns in five Kazakh sheep breeds using a publicly available OvineSNP50 genotyping dataset. After quality control, ~25 000 SNPs were retained for 1634 Akzhaiyk, 1089 Edilbay, 532 Kazakh Fine-Wool, 932 Kazakh Semi-Coarse, and 282 Saryarka sheep. HRR were detected separately in each breed using the sliding-window approach in

Is partial worm replacement effective for Haemonchus contortus control in different sheep breeds?

Partial worm replacement (PR), consisting of the elimination of an anthelmintic-resistant parasite population from the host but not from the environment, was evaluated as a tool to improve anthelmintic treatment efficacy in White Dorper (DO), Santa Inês (SI), and Texel (TX) sheep breeds. Artificially infected ewes were kept either in a nematode-free paddock (total replacement - TR) or in a paddock naturally contaminated with resistant helminth larvae (PR) and compared with untreated ewes harboring resistant helminths kept in a naturally contaminated paddock (control - C) over two breeding seas…

Avian cecal microbiome response and resilience to Newcastle disease are dictated by breed background.

A wide range of viral infections threaten the long-term sustainability of poultry production. Newcastle disease (ND), caused by Newcastle disease virus (NDV), is endemic in most Asian countries, including Pakistan, causing 50%-100% mortality in young and mature chickens. Some local chicken breeds show resistance to certain diseases and have greater survival probability. The chicken gut microbiome is linked to immune response against infections and to production performance parameters. The present study aims to comprehend disease resistance patterns in multiple chicken breeds with respect to gu

The heat is on: behavioural, physiological and reproductive evidence of heat stress in breeding king penguins.

Polar and sub-polar animals evolved to thrive in cold climates and may thus be particularly sensitive to rising temperatures associated with climate change. Penguins may be especially vulnerable, due to their dual habitat, alternating between foraging in cold waters and breeding/moulting on an increasingly warm land. Here, we characterized heat stress occurrence in breeding king penguins through behavioural observations (e.g. panting occurrence) and body temperature measurements. We observed that behavioural signs of heat stress are frequent in king penguins breeding in the sub-Antarctic regio…

Clinical characterization and genotypic identification of border disease virus in sheep breeds in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Border disease (BD), caused by Border Disease Virus (BDV), leads to reproductive losses, congenital defects, and persistently infected (PI) lambs that maintain viral circulation. In Iran, existing reports are limited, confined to one area and breed, and rarely integrate clinical, pathological, virological, and genotypic data. This study investigates BD across Iranian sheep breeds, combining clinical observation, pathology, virus detection, and genotype analysis to clarify its epidemiology and support early recognition, targeted control measures, and improved small ruminant health a

Radiographic characteristics of cranial cruciate ligament disease in small- and large-breed dogs.

AIMS: To compare the severity of radiographic features of cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD) in 123 small (≤15 kg) and 125 large (>15 kg) breed dogs and to determine whether body size influenced the proportion of positive radiographic signs in cases with equivocal clinical instability. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 298 stifles (149 small breed, 149 large breed) with surgically confirmed CCLD via arthroscopy or arthrotomy. Standard caudocranial and mediolateral radiographs of the stifle were scored by a board-certified radiologist blinded to dog size usi
