Nonarticular rheumatism refers to a group of conditions characterized by musculoskeletal aches and pains which do not arise from joints. A number of different entities are considered under this definition. They are classified either as generalized conditions which include polymyalgia rheumatica, fibrositis and aches and pains NYD, or localized conditions which include the enthesopathies: tendonitis, epicondylitis and fasciitis, tenosynovitis and bursitis. The treatment of most of these conditions is expectant, because they tend to be self-limiting and improve despite therapeutic interventions.…

All patients underwent comprehensive US assessment of the shoulder and knee for synovitis, bursitis, tenosynovitis, tendinitis and ligament inflammation at baseline.
RESULTS: US scores for tenosynovitis, tendinitis and ligament inflammation better discriminated the PMR-definite group from the PMR-mimic and RA groups than do those for synovitis or …

BACKGROUND: The currently available scoring methods for enthesitis are often measures of pain but not of inflammation at entheseal sites. Th … formed at three time points: screening, Week 24 and Week 52. Inflammatory MRI findings (tendinitis, bursitis and bone marrow oedema [BME]) in the area of the Achilles tendon and/or plantar aponeurosis, periarticular inflammation of the ankle joint and heel erosion were assessed qualitatively (absent/present). In addition, BME and bone erosion were quantita …

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the reliability of consensus-based ultrasound (US) definitions of elementary components of enthesitis in spondyloarthritis (SpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and to evaluate which of them had the highest contribution to defining and scoring enthesitis.
METHODS: Eleven sonographers evaluated 40 entheses from five patients with SpA/PsA at four bilateral sites. Nine US elementary lesions were binary-scored: hypoechogenicity, thickened insertion, enthesophytes, calcifications, erosions, bone irregularities, bursitis and Doppler signal inside and around enthesis. Kappa sta…

Non-cholerae Vibrio species and Shewanella species are organisms that rarely infect humans. Symptoms can range from gastroenteritis to wound infections to septicemia. In addition, these infections can lead to multiple poor outcomes ranging from amputations to death. We present a case of an 11-year-old male with prepatellar bursitis of the right knee due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Shewanella algae following an open wound in the Gulf of Mexico complicated by retained oyster shell fragments. He completely recovered after removal of the foreign bodies and organism-directed antimicrobial therap…

An 84-year-old male, with a large gouty tophus over the left elbow for 20 years, developed a new left elbow area mass about three months ago and presented to the emergency department (ED) with complaints of bleeding from that left elbow area mass after a small blunt injury. Initially diagnosed as olecranon bursitis, it had the worsening size and atypical growth associated with persistent leukocytosis. After being evaluated by multiple specialties, including infectious diseases, orthopedic surgery, and rheumatology, it was decided to do a biopsy, which resulted in the diagnosis of histiocytic s…

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of Morton neuromas is highly accurate. Morton neuromas are more conspicuous when the patient is prone positioned and the foot is plantar flexed than in the supine position with the toes pointing upward. MR imaging of Morton neuromas has a large influence on the diagnostic thinking and treatment plan of orthopedic foot surgeons. The most common differential diagnoses include intermetatarsal bursitis, stress fractures, and stress reactions. Some diagnoses (nodules associated with rheumatoid arthritis, synovial cyst, soft tissue chondroma, and plantar fibromatosis)…

Ten episodes of musculoskeletal sepsis have been seen in nine patients with HIV infection. Seven patients had AIDS, circulating CD4-positive lymphocyte counts being less than 0.1 x 10(9)/l in six. Septic arthritis recurred in seven patients, osteomyelitis in three and pyomyositis and bursitis each occurred in one patient. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from four patients, atypical micro-organisms being found in three. Presentation of musculoskeletal infection in this patient group may be atypical but rapid diagnosis is important as early antimicrobial therapy is often successful.

Frozen shoulder (FS) is a common disorder characterized by spontaneous onset of shoulder pain accompanied by progressive loss of range-of-motions. The cause of FS is still unclear, and radical therapy has not been established. With the final aim of preventing or curing FS at an earlier stage, we reviewed the pathological and biological features of this disease. Many studies indicate that the main pathology of FS is inflammation initially and fibrosis later. There are inflammatory cytokines, immune cells, fibrotic growth factors, and type-III collagen in the synovium and the joint capsule. The

INTRODUCTION: Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) or trochanteric bursitis is described as pain on the lateral side of the hip that does not involve the hip joint and can be elicited clinically by palpation over the greater trochanter. To date, there remains no consensus on clinical guidelines for either diagnosis or management of GTPS.
METHODS: To understand the practice patterns, beliefs, and attitudes relating to the management of GTPS after total hip arthroplasty, a survey was developed and completed by Canadian arthroplasty surgeons. The final survey consisted of 23 questions divid…

OBJECTIVE: Adhesive capsulitis is an inflammatory disease of the joint capsule, clinically manifested as pain, stiffness, and dysfunction of the shoulder. We subjectively observed an increased incidence of adhesive capsulitis, and raised the hypothesis that adhesive capsulitis was more frequent in magnetic resonance imaging examinations performed during the COVID-19 pandemic as compared with examinations prior to this period.
METHODS: Data from medical records and magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder presenting typical imaging findings of adhesive capsulitis, performed in our organizati

BACKGROUND: External snapping hip syndrome (ESH) is postulated to be one of the causes of greater trochanteric pain syndrome, which also includes greater trochanteric bursitis and tendinopathy or tears of the hip abductor mechanism. However, it was not yet described what kind of bony morphology can cause the snapping and whether symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals have different imaging features.
PURPOSE: It was the purpose of this study to look for predisposing morphological factors for ESH and to differentiate between painful and asymptomatic snapping.
METHODS: A consecutive cohort wi…
