Daily intake of Cd, albeit in small quantities, is associated with a number of adverse health effects which are attributable to distinct pathological changes in a variety of tissues and organs. We collected toenail and hair samples from 160 subjects, 83 males and 77 females, residing in Lahore city and its suburban areas in Pakistan, and examined the concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, lead and other metals using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This work explored cellular trapping and extrusion of Cd and Hg in epithelial cells, with special emphasis on the jejunal mucosa. Important determinants of these processes are the concentration, diffusibility and relative metal affinities of a variety of cellular metal-binding compounds including metallothionein (MT). The actions of two mercury compounds, HgCl2 and methyl mercury chloride (MeHg), and of CdCl2 on the epithelium of the rat colon were studied with the whole-cell patch-clamp technique and the Ussing chamber. In a study carried out in an alkaline battery factory, the study group consisted of 141 factory workers exposed to cadmium, while 206 workers in the textile industry constituted the control group. The renal effects of diabetes mellitus and cadmium (Cd), separately or in combination, were investigated in unilaterally nephrectomized female Sprague-Dawley rats. Bone density was measured in 28 women with itai-itai disease, 92 men and 114 women with cadmium-induced renal dysfunctions and 44 men and 66 women living in the three different non-polluted areas using a microdensitometer.
