Modified perineal urethrostomy using preputial mucosa in cats.

A modified perineal urethrostomy was performed in 14 males cats with partial or complete urethral obstruction. Follow-up information was available for 2 to 18 months. By use of this method, the preputial tissues were preserved, and the penile urethra was anastomosed to the preputial mucosa to enlarge and lengthen the urethra. Urine flow was reestablished in all cats without evidence of urethral stenosis or other major complications. Appearance of the perineal region and prepuce was not substantially altered.

Medroxyprogesterone acetate with acetazolamide stimulates breathing in cats.

Both medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) and acetazolamide (ACET) increase ventilation. Combined administration of these agents could result in an additional improvement of blood gases, for example in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. The aim of this study in anaesthetized female (ovariohysterectomized, pre-treated with 17-beta-estradiol) cats was to compare the effects on the CO2 response curve of MPA alone (4 microg kg(-1), i.v.) with those after MPA followed by ACET (4 mg kg(-1) i.v.). We performed dynamic end-tidal CO2 forcing and analysed the data with a two-compartment …

Gastrointestinal transit times in young and old cats.

Ageing results in a decrease in apparent nutrient digestibility in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the rate of gastric emptying or total GI transit times differed between young (3.0+/-0.9 years) and senior (11.6+/-1. 4 years) cats. Gastric emptying rates were measured using [1-(13)C]octanoic acid and total transit times with chromium oxide. No significant differences (P>0.05) were observed in either the rate of gastric emptying or total transit time between young and senior cats although senior cats exhibited a larger variability in total trans…

Risk factors for odontoclastic resorptive lesions in cats.

A cross-sectional study evaluating potential risk factors for odontoclastic resorptive lesions (ORL) in feline teeth was conducted. Owners of 32 cats with ORL and 27 cats without ORL were interviewed regarding their respective cat's demographic characteristics, diet, and medical and dental histories. Four factors were identified as significantly associated with ORL using unconditional logistic regression. A history of dental disease (gingivitis, calculus, or periodontal disease; odds ratio [OR], 4.5); city residence (OR, 4.4); and being an exclusively indoor cat (OR, 4.5) were associated with …

Evaluation of the white-coat effect in cats.

The diagnosis and management of systemic hypertension in cats requires a reliable method for measurement of systemic arterial blood pressure (BP) in clinical patients. Unfortunately, the setting of a clinical practice and the act of measuring BP might raise BP and heart rate (HR), an effect referred to as the white-coat effect in human patients. The purpose of the present study was to determine if a white-coat effect was experienced by cats. Radiotelemetric implants were used to measure BP and HR in 13 conscious cats in a research colony while undisturbed in their cages and while subjected to …

Ultrasonographic evaluation of renal autografts in normal cats.

The purpose of this study was to determine changes in resistive index (RI) and renal size that occur in normal feline kidney autografts in the immediate post-transplant period. Qualitative changes in renal parenchymal echogenicity and pelvic dilation were also noted, although this was not a major focus of the study. Fourteen domestic short-haired cats underwent bilateral nephrectomies followed by an autograft of the right kidney to either the aorta or external iliac artery. Due to post-operative complications, only nine of these cats completed the study. Ultrasonographic determination of the R…

Large granular lymphocyte leukemia/lymphoma in six cats.

This report describes six cases of feline large granular lymphocyte lymphoma identified by light microscopy on the basis of their characteri … suggestive of either a cytotoxic T cell or a natural killer cell origin of the neoplasias. In three cats, although other abdominal organs were affected to a variable extent, the main neoplastic lesions were localized in the gastrointestinal tract and the jejunal lymph nodes. In contrast, in the other three cats, organ involvement was more widespread, a …

Egg production capacity of Paragonimus pulmonalis in cats.

In the present study, each of 43 cats was fed with a single metacercaria of Paragonimus pulmonalis and 2 cats (controls) with 2 metacercariae. They were killed 22-372 days postinfection. In the test group, 18 (41.9%) cats were infected, as well as the 2 cats in the control group. Among the 18 worms recovered from the test group, 9 found in the lungs were mature, whereas 5 mature and 4 immature worms were in the pleural cavity. Most eggs from worms encased in a cyst were passed in the feces. However, eggs from worms in the pleural cavity were only found on the lung surface and pleural cavity. M…

Acute gastric dilatation in cats: a case series.

Acute gastric dilatation (AGD) is a well-known, acute, life-threatening disease in dogs but its feline counterpart is much less known. This paper provides descriptions of 2 cases of AGD in cats that the authors have seen. Including these a total of 10 cases of feline AGD have been reported. No breed or sex predilection was found among the cases. Age distribution ranged from 11 weeks to 13 years. All 10 cats with AGD had enlarged abdomens on presentation. In 3 of the cases this was the only presenting sign and all 3 were simple, uncomplicated gastric dilatations, that were easily corrected by g…

Feline urticaria pigmentosa in three related Sphinx cats.

Abstract  A pruritic maculopapular eruption with clinical and histological features similar to urticaria pigmentosa of humans is reported in three related Sphinx cats. All cats shared the same grandsire, had a juvenile onset of disease, and demonstrated similar historical, clinical and histological findings. Physical examination revealed widespread bilaterally symmetrical, erythematous, partially coalescing, crusted macules and papules on the trunk, limbs, neck and head. A few macules exhibited a dark brown pigmentation. Dermatographism could not be elicited in any of the cats. Histological ex…

Inheritance of polycystic kidney disease in Persian cats.

Polycystic kidney disease in Persian cats culminates in chronic renal failure after a variable clinical course. An affected 6-year-old Persian cat was used to establish a colony of cats with polycystic kidney disease. In affected cats, cysts could be detected by ultrasonography as early as 7 weeks of age. Absence of cysts on ultrasound examination at 6 months of age was correlated with absence of polycystic kidney disease at necropsy. Both males and females were affected and, of progeny from affected x unaffected crosses, 42% were affected and 58% were unaffected. In affected x affected crosse…

Renal transplantation in cats with chronic renal failure.

Renal transplantation was performed on 6 cats with chronic renal failure. Clinical signs and the blood chemistry findings (BUN, Cr, IP) improved one week after renal transplantation. Renal anemia also improved 3-4 weeks after surgery. Two cases had the same complications, hydronephrosis and hydroureter within 1 or 2 weeks of surgery, evidenced by marked elevations of BUN and Cr, suggesting that ureteral obstruction at the site of ureterocystostomy is the main complication of renal transplantation in cats. As a new resolution for this problem, we transplanted the ureter with the intact ureteral…

Is Helicobacter pylori transmitted from cats to humans?

BACKGROUND: Subsequent to the isolation of Helicobacter pylori from domestic cats, it has been suggested that the organism might be transmitted from cats to humans. This hypothesis has already gained considerable media attention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a previous study of risk factors for H. pylori infection, 447 factory workers from Stoke on Trent in the UK had provided blood samples for H. pylori serological workup. They had also completed a detailed questionnaire concerning their living conditions, including the possession of any household pets, in childhood. Logistic regression was use…
