A new purification procedure was adopted for Eastern equine encephalitis virus which does not subject the virus to pelleting at any stage. Three- to 4-liter volumes were passed through a diethylaminoethyl cellulose column. The virus-containing fractions were banded on a sucrose cushion and finally concentrated in an isopycnic band in a linear sucrose gradient. This method reduced the volume 1,000-fold with a concomitant increase in viral titer, i.e., better than 90% recovery. Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are voltage-independent, amiloride-sensitive channels involved in diverse physiological processes ranging from nociception to taste. OBJECTIVES: The health effects of chronic low-dose radiation exposure remains a controversial question. Monitoring after the Chernobyl nuclear accident in Ukraine suggested that chronic low-dose radiation exposure was not linked to cancer mortality among the general population. Glutamate transporters are expressed throughout the CNS where their major role is to clear released glutamate from presynaptic terminals. Here, we report a novel function of the transporter in rat pinealocytes. This electrogenic transporter conducted inward current in response to L-glutamate and L- or D-aspartate and depolarized the membrane in patch-clamp experiments. Fluorescence in situ hybridization with chromosome-specific composite DNA probes ('chromosome painting') is useful for quantifying radiation-induced cytogenetic damage. 8 patients with bone marrow failure after a caesium-137 radiation accident were treated with recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (rHuGM-CSF). The 7 who were evaluable had prompt increases in granulocytes and bone marrow cellularity. 2 patients died of radiation toxicity and haemorrhage and 2 of bacterial sepsis acquired before the start of rHuGM-CSF treatment. 4 patients survive, including 2 who were treated early and never became infected. This therapeutic approach to radiation-induced granulocytopenia may therefore be useful after radiation and nuclear accident

Increases in extracellular potassium concentrations reliably increase burst rates in cultured fetal murine spinal cord networks. This effect could be mimicked by either blocking voltage-gated potassium conductances or facilitating excitatory synaptic interactions, but not by blocking specific calcium-dependent potassium conductances or tonic depolarization. Spontaneous bursting in cultured networks is apparently dependent on potassium currents and intracellular calcium levels, but not on the pharmacologically characterized calcium-dependent potassium conductances.

We report our experience with radiotherapy for three patients with cervical carcinoma in whom surgery had been downgraded to the performance of exploratory laparotomy only, because of extensive primary tumor or nodal invasion to the surrounding organs and vessels.
