Varicella is generally a mild infections disease of children age. It may be danger among others for people especially children with biological or iatrogenic immunosuppression for instance with diagnosis of leukemia, other neoplastic diseases and with transplantation of tissues. Live, attenuated vaccine was produced in Biken Institute in 1974. It was found as immunogenic, effective, small reactogenic and stabile. The price of vaccine is very high (one dose--74 DM). Vaccination of children against varicella with immunosuppression in the course of leukemia or other diseases performed in hospitals

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have suggested that herpesvirus infection increased the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but it is unclear whether the association is causal. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the causal relationship between four herpesvirus infections and AD.
METHODS: We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate association of four active herpesvirus infections with AD using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies. The four herpesvirus infections (i.e., chickenpox, shingles, cold sores, mononucleosis) are caused by vari…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Prodromal infections are associated with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), but it remains unclear which type of infection has a causal association with NMOSD. We aimed to explore the causal associations between four herpesvirus infections (chickenpox, cold sores, mononucleosis and shingles) and NMOSD, as well as between other types of infections and NMOSD.
METHODS: For data on infections, we used the genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics from the 23andMe cohort. For outcomes, we used the GWAS data of participants of European ancestry, in…

Reposition of variola virus in some laboratories in the United Kingdom led to serious incidents before the announcement by WHO of the Global Eradication of Smallpox in 1980. These three incidents resulted in 78 people recorded as infected with smallpox, among whom 3 died, and very many more were misdiagnosed at the time as suffering from chickenpox. Therefore WHO discussed the problems and decided to reduce gradually the number of repositories of variola virus in laboratories world-wide from previously unknown numbers to two. However, in the event of a sudden outbreak of a new mutated smallpox…

The varicella-zoster virus is an exclusively human herpesvirus, responsible for chickenpox. Its reactivation, after several decades, causes herpes zoster (shingles). Herpes zoster produces a rash, classically metameric, that causes acute pain and complications to elderly patients. The last, most painful, and disabling of these is postherpetic neuralgia. This neuralgia is defined as a painful syndrome lasting for more than 30 days after eruption of the rash. Today's systemic antiviral drugs can reduce the severity of the eruption, limit the pain, and diminish the incidence of postherpetic neura…

Postherpetic ophthalmic neuralgia is the final stage of a varicella zoster infection. Many years after chickenpox infection, patients can develop herpes zoster in one or more specific dermatomal regions. The ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve and the thoracic nerves are most commonly affected. Younger patients are less prone to postherpetic neuralgia than the older. Patients with a depression in cell-mediated immunity are more susceptible to develop postherpetic pain. Postherpetic ophthalmic neuralgia is a neuropathic pain and can be treated by anticonvulsants and tricyclic antidepressa…

In the first part of this paper the authors used for demographic data and morbidity data concerning measles, parotitis, rubella and chickenpox in the Sokolov district a model of exponential distribution, in particular its distribution function. The authors introduced the concept of mean population year. They tested the theoretical assumption that in different infections in long-term average the annual number of infected subjects is equal and equals the mean population year. They found that the delta parameter which determines the shape of the exponential regression curve and is the measure of …

Mathematical models exist for vaccination programs for common childhood diseases such as measles, chickenpox, polio, rubella, and mumps. In compartmental models, the population is divided into compartments containing susceptible, infected, and immune individuals, and the model also takes account of the age structure in the population. An equilibrium analysis is performed on the resulting partial differential equations to determine the vaccination program that just eliminates the disease. The stability of the resulting equilibrium solutions is also examined. Particular attention is paid to mult…

Sialic acid immunoglobulin-like lectin (Siglec) family molecules are immune regulatory receptors that bind to specific molecules containing sialic acids. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), a member of the herpesvirus family, infects hematopoietic cells and spreads throughout the body, causing chickenpox, shingles, and, sometimes fatal encephalomyelitis. However, the cellular entry receptors that are required for VZV to infect hematopoietic cells have remained unclear. Here, we found that Siglec-7, mainly expressed on hematopoietic cells, binds to VZV envelope glycoprotein B in a sialic acid-depende…

BACKGROUND: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a known cause of aseptic meningitis, with a predisposition for an immunocompromised population. A dermatomal rash usually accompanies aseptic meningitis secondary to VZV.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 31-year-old male with a history of chickenpox in childhood and recent shingles who presented with severe frontal headaches secondary to VZV meningitis. The patient had also recently received the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. He recovered without any neurological sequala.
CONCLUSION: This case report describes an immunocompetent pat…

We present the case of a seven-year-old fully immunized male who developed an intensely pruritic, generalized maculopapular rash that progressed to vesicles. The patient's rash was initially diagnosed by his primary care provider as possible scabies and treated with topical permethrin. Our examination revealed a diffuse maculopapular and vesicular exanthem with lesions at various stages of evolution, eventually progressing to secondary cellulitis. The patient's presentation, consistent with varicella (chickenpox), highlights the diagnostic challenges of breakthrough varicella infection and pot…

The herpes zoster (HZ) virus first manifests as varicella, or chickenpox, in children and remains dormant in the dorsal root ganglia of the nerves. The vesicular eruptions that might be painful develop along a dermatome when the virus is reactivated. While postherpetic neuralgia is a well-known side effect of herpes simplex, there are well-reported motor consequences as well. Segmental zoster paresis is an uncommon motor consequence of herpes zoster that resembles an anterior abdominal wall hernia but does not require surgery in contrast to an actual abdominal wall hernia. We present a similar…

We examine the role of Venezuelan forced migration on the propagation of 15 infectious diseases in Colombia. For this purpose, we use rich municipal-monthly panel data. We exploit the fact that municipalities closer to the main migration entry points have a disproportionate exposure to infected migrants when the cumulative migration flows increase. We find that higher refugee inflows are associated with increments in the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases, such as chickenpox and tuberculosis, as well as sexually transmitted diseases, namely syphilis. However, we find no significant effe…

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is the causative agent of chickenpox (varicella) and shingles (herpes zoster). VZV and other members of the herpesvirus family are distinguished by their ability to establish a latent infection, with the potential to reactivate and spread virus to other susceptible individuals. This lifelong relationship continually subjects VZV to the host immune system and as such VZV has evolved a plethora of strategies to evade and manipulate the immune response. This review will focus on our current understanding of the innate anti-viral control mechanisms faced by VZV. We wil…

Varicella zoster is a secondary infection caused by the virus of chickenpox, after becoming latent in neurons of dorsal root ganglia or trigeminal ganglia. Varicella zoster virus (VZV) can be reactivated years later to produce shingles (zoster), generally in immunocompromised adults to produce neurological deficits and rash. Meningeal involvement of VZV is also reported and can be diagnosed. Herein, we report a 39-year-old immunocompetent male adult with a rare manifestation caused by VZV. The report is an association between facial nerve palsy and a polymerase chain reaction-confirmed VZV men…

Our work develops procedures and useful tools for the screening, assessment and management of prevalent infectious or parasitic diseases (tuberculosis, measles, chickenpox, scabies, bed bugs) among asylum seekers and detainees in the canton of Vaud, populations living in similar closed settings. Its aim is to support health professionals in their work, to maintain the health of the target population and to protect the health of the community. Through a literature review and a focus group with experts, it is proposed to harmonize the existing procedures in asylum seekers centres end prisons of …
