Differences in self-report measures by adolescent sex offender risk group.

Differences in self-reports among three groups of juvenile sex offenders (N = 162) were examined. Risk was defined as the sum of the following static variables based on interviews with juveniles and others and from written records: type of offense (violent or predatory = 1, not = 0), prior sex offense (any = 1, none = 0), history of sexual abuse (self or family = 1, none = 0), history of substance abuse (self or family = 1, none = 0), history of behavior problems (yes = 1, no = 0), and unstable home life (yes = 1, stable = 0). Low-risk (0 to 2 risk factors), medium-risk (3 factors), and high-r

Maternal Depressive Symptoms and Risk for Childhood Depression: Role of Executive Functions.

OBJECTIVE: Offspring of mothers with depression are at increased risk for executive function (EF) deficits and later depressive symptoms, but limited studies have examined EF as an intermediary pathway. This study examined the role of EF in mediating the association between maternal and child depressive symptoms. METHOD: Data were from a longitudinal birth cohort comprising 739 participants followed from the antenatal period for 12 years. Mothers completed the Edinburgh Perinatal Depression Scale at 26 to 28 weeks' gestation and at 3 and 24 months postpartum. At ages 8.5 to 10 years, children

Early parent-child interaction and home environments of children exposed prenatally to opioids: A comparison of biological mothers and out-of-home caregivers.

Children born to mothers with opioid use disorder (OUD) are at increased risk of maltreatment and out-of-home care (OOHC) placement. This study examines the parent-child interaction quality and home environments of 92 New Zealand children with prenatal opioid exposure (OE) and 106 non-opioid-exposed (NE) children. Experiences for those in maternal care versus OOHC were of particular interest. Biological mothers completed a lifestyle interview during late pregnancy/at birth. At 18 months, parent-child interaction observations, maternal/primary caregiver interviews, and the Home Observation for

Autonomic reactivity in relation to attachment and early adversity among foster children.

This study examined whether the quality of relationships with foster caregivers was associated with autonomic nervous system reactivity of children during separation and reunion with their foster caregiver. Moreover, effects of early adversity were examined in relation to attachment and autonomic nervous system reactivity. The sample included 60 children between 26 and 88 months of age, who participated with their primary foster caregivers in the Strange Situation. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia and preejection period were measured as indicators of parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system

Inequalities in educational outcomes in individuals with childhood experience of out-of-home care: What are driving the differences?

BACKGROUND: Prior research has shown that individuals with experience of out-of-home care (foster family care or residential care) in childhood are educationally disadvantaged compared to their peers. In order to be better equipped to design interventions aimed at improving the educational outcomes of children for whom society has assumed responsibility, this study seeks to further our understanding about which factors that contribute to the educational disparities throughout the life course. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from a cohort of more than 13,000 Swedes, of which around 7% have ch

Reactive attachment disorder in maltreated twins follow-up: from 18 months to 8 years.

The best means for the diagnosis and treatment of reactive attachment disorder of infancy and early childhood have not been established. Though some longitudinal data on institutionalized children is available, reports of maltreated young children who are followed over time and assessed with measures of attachment are lacking. This paper presents the clinical course of a set of maltreated fraternal twins who were assessed and treated from 19 months to 30 months of age and then seen in follow-up at 3 and 8 years of age. A summary of the early assessment and course is provided and findings from

Opening the Discussion on the Costs of Pedophilic Disorder as a Mental Health Concern.

Despite recent advances, pedophilic disorder remains a highly stigmatized and underexplored condition. While its classification as a mental disorder is debated, we adopt this assumption provisionally to apply a cost-of-illness (COI) framework. COI studies, though methodologically limited, offer a pragmatic tool to translate individual impairment into societal costs-thus enabling health policy discussions, identifying service gaps, and supporting early intervention. This article outlines the potential COI associated with pedophilic disorder, distinguishing between cases with offense-related beh

Screening and Management of Perinatal Depression in Nepal: The Need for Urgent Action.

Perinatal depression is one of the most neglected public health concerns among reproductive-age women in resource-limited countries, such as Nepal. Currently, there is a lack of standardized protocols to screen and treat women for depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period in Nepal. Additionally, healthcare providers are often not adequately trained to identify and treat perinatal depression. This, coupled with the stigma related to mental health issues and a lack of community resources, can delay the identification and treatment of perinatal depression among women. The purpose of t

Placental DNA methylation key topics: sex- and cell-type specificity, mediation, multi-omics, and biomarker discovery.

The placenta is a dynamic organ that serves numerous purposes for fostering a successful pregnancy and the delivery of a healthy infant in humans. It performs critical functions in nutrient and oxygen transport, immune modulation, and hormonal regulation. DNA methylation, a key epigenetic mechanism of transcriptional regulation, plays a key role in the underlying etiologies of placenta-related health complications. Therefore, assessing placental DNA methylation is essential for understanding how adverse prenatal exposures may impact both short-term and long-term health outcomes in women and ch

A 10-year follow-up study of psychosocial factors affecting couples after infertility treatment.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the long-term course taken in life by couples who had undergone medically assisted reproduction (MAR). The aim of this study was to find out in a large sample whether, in comparison with parents, involuntarily childless couples have a different subjective perception of overall and specific quality of life over a period of >10 years. METHODS: Between 1994 and 1997, 564 couples participated in the initial Heidelberg Fertility Consultation Service study of psychosocial aspects of infertility. In March 2008, a follow-up questionnaire was sent to all of these coup

A Psychoanalytically Informed Pilot Study of Moral Competence in German Young Adults Linked to Personality Structure and Parenting Experiences.

The present pilot study explored associations between moral competence, personality structure and perceived parenting experiences. While previous research on moral competence has mainly emphasized educational and cognitive determinants, this work represents a novel psychoanalytically informed investigation of this ability. A sample of 88 young adults aged 18 to 21 completed an online survey including the Moral Competence-Test, OPD-Structure-Questionnaire, and Zurich Brief Questionnaire for the Assessment of Parental Behaviors. Exploratory analyses revealed a positive association between moral
