Understanding local perspectives on child mental health to strengthen school-based interventions in Darjeeling, India.

BackgroundChild mental health needs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) often go unmet due to a scarcity of specialists. In Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, Tealeaf (Teachers Leading the Frontlines), a task-shifting model in which teachers serve as lay counselors, has shown early promise. We explored stakeholders' culturally held beliefs about causes of child mental health concerns to contextualize Tealeaf's ongoing trial.MethodsWe conducted twelve semi-structured interviews (March-April 2022) with purposively selected principals, teachers, and caregivers. Using qualitative description,

Enhancing referrals to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services: the EN-CAMHS mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: National Health Service Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services are specialist teams that assess and treat children and young people with mental health problems. Overall, 497,502 children were referred to National Health Service Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services between 2020 and 2021, and almost one-quarter of these referrals were not successful. Unsuccessful referrals are often distressing for children and families who are turned away usually after a long waiting period and without necessarily being redirected to alternative services. The process is also costly to se

Factors associated with cervical cancer screening among women attending maternal child health clinics in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the second leading malignancy in incidence among women in sub-Saharan Africa. Early detection through screening and treatment of pre-cancerous cervical lesions is paramount in preventing cervical cancer. We sought to examine factors associated with ever being screened for cervical cancer among women attending infant immunization clinics in Kenya. METHODS: We conducted secondary data analysis from a cross-sectional survey that enrolled mother-infant pairs attending 55 infant immunization clinics in Kenya between 2018 and 2019. Clinics were selected from high and

Building resilience in families experiencing homelessness through integration of health, parenting and child development programs.

Children who experience homelessness are vulnerable to mental health problems, developmental delays and lower academic achievement. Research suggests that parental health literacy, sensitive parenting behaviour and child self-regulation are modifiable mechanisms that might enhance children's resilience to adversities associated with homelessness, yet empirical evidence on implementing such interventions in shelter settings is limited. Through a coordinated academic-community partnership, this study aimed to examine the (1) feasibility of conducting an integrated health approach in shelter sett

Training health professionals to reduce overreporting of birthing people who use drugs to child welfare.

BACKGROUND: Health care providers are a key source of reports of infants to child welfare related to birthing people's substance use. Many of these reports are overreports, or reports that exceed what is legally mandated, and reflect racial bias. We developed and evaluated a webinar for health professionals to address overreporting related to birthing people's substance use. METHODS: This evaluation study collected data from health professionals registering to participate in a professional education webinar about pregnancy, substance use, and child welfare reporting. It collected baseline dat

Diversity of kidney care referral pathways in national child health systems of 48 European countries.

BACKGROUND: Primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare services in Europe create complex networks covering pediatric subspecialties, sociology, economics and politics. Two surveys of the European Society for Paediatric Nephrology (ESPN) in 1998 and 2017 revealed substantial disparities of kidney care among European countries. The purpose of the third ESPN survey is to further identify national differences in the conceptualization and organization of European pediatric kidney health care pathways during and outside normal working hours. METHODS: In 2020, a questionnaire was sent to one leading

Health-Related Quality of Life in Kindergarten Children with Developmental Language Disorder: Child-Mother Agreement.

Language disorders are associated with difficulties in various aspects of life, such as academic and social functioning, resulting in impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Most studies use a parent proxy method to assess HRQoL. Since HRQoL refers to the subjective experience of an individual, it is necessary to assess children's perspectives along with their mothers'. The aim of the current study is to explore HRQoL rating agreement between children and their mothers, since the literature on other conditions suggests that discrepancies seem to reflect their different perspectives. Child maltreatment and mental health problems in 30-year-old adults: A birth cohort study.

Retrospective studies have shown a high association between child abuse and subsequent psychiatric morbidity. Prospective studies are rarer with limited data at 30-year follow-up. This was a prospective record-linkage analysis to examine whether notified and/or substantiated child maltreatment was associated with adverse psychological outcomes in early adulthood when participants were 30 years old. We used data from 2861 young adults who completed the 30-year follow-up phase of the Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy and its Outcomes, a prospective study commenced in 1981. Exposu
