Functional limitations and key indicators of well-being in children with disability.

OBJECTIVES: To compare measures of well-being in children with and without different types and severity of limitations. DESIGN: Nationally representative data for American children aged 5 to 17 years were drawn from the 1994 and 1995 National Health Interview Surveys on Disability (NHIS-D) (N = 41,300) and the Year 2000 Health Supplement to the 1994 NHIS-D (N = 9530). Family resources, safety, health status, and health access were measures of environment. The presence and severity of limitations were measured in the domains of mobility, self-care, communication, and learning. RESULTS: Childr

Phonological awareness in French-speaking children at risk for reading disabilities.

We report the phonological awareness abilities of preliterate French-speaking children. The performance of a group of children identified At Risk (n = 26) for reading disabilities was compared to that of normally developing age-matched controls (n = 22) on a range of standardised and experimental tests. Results showed the At Risk children to have a selective impairment in expressive relative to receptive language, whereas Controls performed at equivalent levels on both measures. Although the children At Risk performed at a significantly lower level than Controls on all but one of the metaphono

Attention factors mediating syntactic deficiency in reading-disabled children.

Syntactic context effects on the identification of spoken words, and the involvement of attention in mediating these effects, were examined in seventh-grade children with reading disabilities and children who were good readers. The subjects were asked to identify target words that were masked by white noise. All targets were final words embedded in unveiled sentences. Relative to a syntactically neutral context, the identification of targets whose morpho-syntactic structure was congruent with the context was facilitated and the identification of syntactically incongruent targets was inhibited.

Conductive hearing loss in autistic, learning-disabled, and normal children.

Katz (1978) has suggested that mild, fluctuating conductive hearing loss due to middle-ear anomalies may account for the language and attention problems of learning-disabled children. His position was extended here to include autism. Normal, learning-disabled, and autistic children received repeated impedance measures over 5 weeks. A repeated-measures ANOVA of central tendency and variability values led to the conclusions that (1) fluctuating, negative middle-ear pressure greater than normal characterizes both autistic and learning-disabled children, (2) the negative pressure is greater in aut

Families with disabled children: stress and social networks in three samples.

Mothers and fathers of 125 handicapped/chronically ill children were compared with parents of 127 matched nondisabled children from three separate samples with respect to personal stress, marital satisfaction, and social network size and density. Only mothers of disabled children experienced higher levels of stress than comparison parents. No differences were found in marital satisfaction. Few group differences were found for social network variables, although mothers of handicapped children had higher-density networks than comparison mothers. A series of ANOVAs examined differences among the

Accuracy versus speed in the generalized effort of learning-disabled children.

Reinforcement of effortful performance in a given academic task has been found to increase the subsequent performance of other academic tasks. The learned-effort hypothesis assumes that individuals learn which dimensions of task performance are correlated with reinforcement of high effort, and generalize across tasks. Therefore, reinforcement of increased effort in a given dimension of one task should result in greater generalized effort in the same dimension of transfer performance than in another dimension. In accord with this view, preadolescent learning-disabled students who received point

A proposed neuropathological basis for learning disabilities in children born prematurely.

This study aimed at providing understanding of the etiology and mechanisms responsible for the learning and behavioral disabilities in the increasing numbers of survivors of neonatal intensive care units who develop MBD/LD-type (minimal brain dysfunction, learning disabilities) complications. The brains of 16 premature infants who died within the first month of life were studied by microscopic examination. Significant neuropathological findings in gray-matter and white-matter were found in many areas, including both superficial cortical and deep basal brain structures. These lesions are postul

[Disabled children in the federal republic of Germany in 1974 (author's transl)].

Within the scope of an additional micro-census inquiry--carried out in 1974--the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden assessed the number of physically, mentally and psychologically impaired children. The results are differentiated according to the types of disability and therapy, age, in-patient treatment and special school attendance. Furthermore, the estimated results are compared with earlier surveys of the Federal Statistical Office and other estimates.

Participation in out-of-home activities and health-related quality of life among Australian children with disabilities: Evidence from the longitudinal study of Australian children.

BACKGROUND: Participation in out-of-home activities (OoHA) is hypothesised to enhance the physical, emotional, and social development of children with disabilities, as well as their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, longitudinal evidence in the Australian context remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between OoHA participation and HRQoL among children with disabilities using a population-based longitudinal dataset. METHODS: Data were drawn from eight waves (2004-2018) of the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, comprising 2480 unique children with disab…

The association of birth weight with children's anxiety, depression and developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) has been linked to the risk of developmental disabilities. However, few studies have been large enough to assess the associations between children's mental health (anxiety, depression) and a comprehensive range of developmental disabilities in a large general children's population, and limited studies have examined dose-response associations. METHODS: This population-based, nationally representative cross-sectional study included 35,379 children aged 6-17 years who participated in the 2022-2023 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) in the U.S from July

Risk of Osteoporosis-Related Fracture in Children and Adolescents with Intellectual Disability.

Background and Objectives: Children and adolescents with intellectual disability (ID) experience substantial health disparities, yet their skeletal health has been overlooked. Early-onset osteoporosis and fracture remain underrecognized in this population. Hence, this study assessed the risk of osteoporosis with concomitant fracture in this population using nationwide cohort data. Materials and Methods: This population-based retrospective cohort study examined data from South Korea's National Health Insurance Service-National Health Information Database (2004-2021). In all, 75,790 individuals

Determinants of the quality of life of mother with children with disability: A systematic review.

Mothers who care for children with disabilities experience various problems that affect their quality of life. The objective of this study was to identify the factors that influence the quality of life of mothers with disabilities children. A systematic review was conducted using data from six prominent electronic databases. Studies were observational, cross-sectional designs, and original research conducted from 2019 to 2023. Mothers who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have the lowest scores for quality of life compared to mothers who have children with other types of disabi…

The shame-blame complex of parents with cognitively disabled children in Italy.

This article aims to advance knowledge related to the concept of the 'shame-blame complex' by analysing the accounts and experiences of parents with cognitively disabled children. It draws on 29 interviews with parents of children with Down syndrome and shadowing sessions with one family, carried out in Italy. Results show how the feeling of shame as a consequence of being associated with a disabled child is turned into blame for bad parenting. The sources of this blaming process are twofold: firstly, neoliberalism has disseminated an intensive parenting model based on the imperative of indivi

Epidemiology of Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathy and of Intellectual Disability and Epilepsy in Children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the population-based cumulative incidence and prevalence of developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) and intellectual disability and epilepsy (ID+E) in children. We analyzed the cumulative incidence of specific epilepsy syndromes. METHODS: Children younger than 16 years with a DEE or ID+E were ascertained using EEG records from 2000 to 2016 in the Wellington region of New Zealand. Epilepsy syndromes were diagnosed on medical record and EEG review. Point prevalence and cumulative incidence for children with epilepsy and developmental

Participation patterns and predictors of participation in preschool children with developmental disability.

INTRODUCTION: The research was aimed to evaluate patterns and clinical and environmental predictors of participation in preschool children with developmental disability. METHOD: Cross-sectional design was employed. Caregivers (n = 98) of children aged 9-70 months (mean = 48, SD = 1.5) with developmental disability completed a health questionnaire and the Lithuanian Young Children's Participation and Environment Measure (YC-PEM). Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regressions were performed to identify patterns and predictors of participation at home, daycare/preschool, and the communi

Survival of children and adolescents with intellectual disability following gastrostomy insertion.

BACKGROUND: Positive health outcomes have been observed following gastrostomy insertion in children with intellectual disability, which is being increasingly used at younger ages to improve nutritional intake. This study investigated the effect of gastrostomy insertion on survival of children with severe intellectual disability. METHODS: We used linked disability and health data of children and adolescents who were born in Western Australia between 1983 and 2009 to compare survival of individuals with severe intellectual disability by exposure to gastrostomy status. For those born in 2000-200

Long-term impact of saliva control surgery in children with disability.

Sialorrhea is a common problem in children with disability, often negatively affecting socialization, self-esteem, and burden of care. Saliva control surgery is an available option to manage this problem, particularly when other conservative methods have failed. As little is known about the long-term impact of surgery, we followed up 62 patients who had combined bilateral submandibular duct translocation and bilateral sublingual gland excision at our pediatric hospital between 1994 and 2014. Eligible individuals were identified through a search of ICD procedure codes. When families of patients
