An outbreak of vampire bat-transmitted rabies in cattle in northeastern Mexico.

An outbreak of bovine rabies occurred on a ranch when cattle were bitten by vampire bats. Microscopic lesions showed a nonsuppurative encephalitis with intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated viral antigen in the brain, and monoclonal antibodies identified a serotype 1 (vampire strain) of the rabies virus.

The brain-stem auditory-evoked response in the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) to clicks and frequency-modulated sweeps.

Three experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of stimulus level on the brain-stem auditory-evoked response (BAER) in the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), a species that uses frequency-modulated (FM) sonar sounds for echolocation. In experiment 1, the effects of click level on the BAER were investigated. Clicks were presented at levels of 30 to 90 dB pSPL in 10-dB steps. Each animal responded reliably to clicks at levels of 50 dB pSPL and above, showing a BAER containing four peaks in the first 3-4 ms from click onset (waves i-iv). With increasing click level, BAER peak amplitude in

Brain activity patterns in flying, echolocating bats (Pteronotus parnellii): assessment by high resolution autoradiographic imaging with [3H]2-deoxyglucose.

Brain activity patterns during echolocation and flight were assessed in mustached bats (Pteronotus parnellii parnellii). Bats were injected intraperitoneally with [3H]2-deoxyglucose and restrained in a foam holder or allowed to fly for 20 min. Under resting conditions, low levels of [3H]2-deoxyglucose uptake were observed throughout the forebrain but relatively high uptake was found in brainstem auditory and vestibular centers. In flying, echolocating bats, marked increases in regional [3H]2-deoxyglucose uptake were apparent. All structures of the classical ascending auditory pathway were inte

Giant mitochondria in the seromucous secretory cells of the accessory submandibular gland of the long-haired fruit bat, Stenonycteris lanosus.

Giant mitochondria, measuring up to 6.4 microns in diameter, are present in the seromucous secretory cells of the accessory submandibular gland of the long-haired fruit bat, Stenonycteris lanosus. These mitochondria, as well as all of the smaller ones in the same cells, contain in their matrix compartment an abundance of 33 nm threads that probably consist of protein. Some mitochondria, regardless of size, contain 5 nm helical filaments within an expanded crista. Despite their altered morphology, the enlarged mitochondria in the accessory submandibular gland of S. lanosus must be able to funct

Connections of somatosensory cortex in megachiropteran bats: the evolution of cortical fields in mammals.

The cortical connections of the primary somatosensory area (SI or 3b), a caudal somatosensory field (area 1/2), the second somatosensory area (SII), the parietal ventral area (PV), the ventral somatosensory area (VS), and the lateral parietal area (LP) were investigated in grey headed flying foxes by injecting anatomical tracers into electrophysiologically identified locations in these fields. The receptive fields for clusters of neurons were mapped with sufficient density for injection sites to be related to the boundaries of fields, and to representations of specific body parts within the fi

Ultrastructure of the pineal body of the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus.

The type AB pineal body of the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, was recessed and lobulated, was extensively vascularized and intimately related to great veins, and was unassociated with the epithalamic region. The habenular and the posterior commissures coursed anteriorly and were unassociated with the pineal. The saccular suprapineal recess of the third ventricle extended dorsally juxtaposed to the pineal body. These anatomical features are likely to make pinealectomies in the vampire more difficult to manage. The pineal parenchyma consisted of light pinealocytes surrounded by canalicul

Histoplasmosis: an outbreak occurring among young men who visited one cave.

Sixteen cases of acute benign inhalational histoplasmosis were investigated after an outbreak of the disease in a group visiting a cave. The diagnosis was confirmed in 13 patients by chest X-ray examination, histoplasmin skin testing and serological examination. An attempt to isolate the organism Histoplasma capsulatum was unsuccessful. The epidemiology and relationship of the disease to bat ecology is discussed.

First data on bacteria associated with bat ectoparasites collected in Kharkiv oblast, Northeastern Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) serve as natural reservoirs for many zoonotic pathogens worldwide, including vector-borne pathogens. However, bat-associated parasitic arthropods and their microbiota are thus far not thoroughly described in many regions across the globe, nor is their role in the spillover of pathogens to other vertebrate species well understood. Basic epidemiological research is needed to disentangle the complex ecological interactions among bats, their specific ectoparasites and microorganisms they harbor. Some countries, such as Ukraine, are particularly data-deficien…

Neuromeric Organization of the Microbat Brain: Conserved and Distinct Regional Features.

Myotis myotis and Tadarida brasiliensis are both microbat species belonging to the Vespertilionidae and Molossidae families, respectively. Our goal is to determine if the 85-million-year evolutionary divergence between microbats and the Muridae family (mice and rats) has led to significant regional variations in the brain. However, the 34-million-year split between M. myotis and T. brasiliensis serves as in-group control to contextualize the larger divergence with rodents. Using the prosomeric framework, main brain derivatives from each neuromeric partition were compared between these two micr

Detection and characterization of a MERS-related coronavirus (Betacoronavirus cameli) in velvety free-tailed bats (Molossus molossus, Mammalia) captured in Southern Brazil.

Bat-borne coronaviruses are of increasing interest due to their potential for zoonotic spillover, particularly within the Betacoronavirus genus. Partial genomic sequences related to MERS-like CoV was identified in multiple hosts, including humans, camelids, and bats from the families Vespertilionidae and Molossidae. In this study, we investigated the presence of coronaviruses in 65 Molossus molossus bats captured in southern Brazil using nested RT-PCR and high-throughput sequencing (HTS). One individual (1.5%) tested positive in a rectal swab, and sequence analysis revealed the presence of a M

Natural infections caused by Leishmania parasites in the Curaçaoan long-nosed bat (Leptonycteris curasoae) in northwestern Venezuela.

Growing evidence of bats carrying Leishmania parasites underlines their potential role as reservoirs or incidental hosts of these parasites. The presence of tegumentary lesions on the rostrum and thumbs of the Long-nosed Curaçaoan Bats (Leptonycteris curasoae), sampled during a population ecology study in a suburban area of northwestern Venezuela, led to an investigation of the potential occurrence of Leishmania parasites in the species in that location. Tissue samples from the noses and ears of ten individuals displaying rostrum lesions were examined using histopathology and molecular screeni

Molecular Detection of Filarioid Nematodes in Bats from the Western Brazilian Amazon.

PURPOSE: Filarial nematodes (Onchocercidae) infect diverse mammals, but their occurrence and molecular diversity in Amazonian bats remain poorly documented. We investigated bat-associated filarioids in urban and peri-urban forest fragments in Rio Branco, Acre, western Brazilian Amazon. METHODS: Between December 2022 and October 2023, bats were captured with mist nets in five forest fragments and identified morphologically. Blood was screened for microfilariae by thin smear and microhematocrit. A mitochondrial 12 S rRNA fragment (~ 330 bp) was amplified, and PCR-positive products were Sanger s

Host attributes and environmental factors affecting the prevalence and abundance of helminths in the broad-tailed bat Nyctinomops laticaudatus.

Studies of bat helminth communities are relatively rare compared with those of other vertebrate groups. Additionally, the relationships between host attributes and environmental factors and the presence and abundance of helminths in bats have seldom been examined. In this study, we evaluated how host traits and environmental conditions may influence the prevalence and abundance of helminths in two cave-dwelling populations of the broad-tailed bat Nyctinomops laticaudatus in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. From January 2024 to May 2025, specimens of N. laticaudatus were captured from Calcehtok an

Molecular identification of bat fly species and associated Bartonella bacteria from Lopburi and Sa Kaeo Provinces in Thailand.

Bat flies harbour several species of bacteria, including Bartonella. We examined 50 bat flies collected from five species of cave-dwelling bats (Eonycteris spelaea, Hipposideros larvatus, Taphozous theobaldi, T. melanopogon and Rousettus sp.) in Lopburi and Sa Kaeo Provinces, Thailand. Four bat fly species in Streblidae (Brachytarsina cucullata, n = 18; B. macrops, n = 6; Megastrebla gigantea, n = 2; and Raymondia sp., n = 7) and one species in Nycteribiidae (Eucampsipoda latisterna, n = 17) were detected. The results of phylogenetic analyses of the COI, COII, 16S rRNA, and 18S rRNA gene seque

Chemical Composition of Secretions from Facial Glands of Captive Hoary Bat (Lasiurus cinereus) in Virginia.

Our study represents the first known report of hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) facial gland histology and chemical characterization of facial gland secretions. While in captivity from October 2023 to February 2024, facial secretions of a male hoary bat were observed and collected. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of a methanol extraction of November 2023 samples identified 23 compounds after comparing retention times, mass spectra, and Kovats retention index. These compounds consisted of alkanes, alcohols, ketones, terpenoids, monoacylglycerols, and androgens. Of interest wa

Bats, bugs, and babies: why stringent guidelines are needed for cause-and-effect interpretation in epidemiological studies.

In a recently published study (Frank, 2024), the author claimed that farmers in the USA compensated for bat decline by increasing their insecticide use by 31.1%, which allegedly caused a 7.9% increase in human infant mortality. The author concluded that his "result highlights that real-world use levels of insecticides have a detrimental impact on health, even when used within regulatory limits". The study is a prime example of how statistics should not be used in a design based on a classical logical fallacy. That is, in short, factor A (detection of a lethal bat disease) correlates with facto

Ixodes chilensis (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) in Argentina.

The aim of this note is to report the first record of Ixodes chilensis Kohl, 1956 in Argentina. In June 2023, ticks were collected on bat belonging to the genus Histiotus from Dina Huapí, Rio Negro Province, Patagonian region, Argentina. Based on morphological characteristics and analysis of an obtained partial 16S rDNA gene sequence, these ticks (five nymphs) were determined as I. chilensis. This result represents the first record of this tick species outside Chile and expands the knowledge of its geographical distribution in the southern cone of South America.
