We designed a suction fixation system for the radiosurgical treatment of intraocular malignancies with the Leksell Gamma Knife. Our device consists of a circular suction chamber and an adjustable unit which is fixed to the Leksell stereotactic head frame. All components are made of plastic in order to avoid artifacts in CT or MRI. A permanent suction of 600-800 mbar is provided by a standard vacuum pump, powered by a portable battery. Tumors of the choroid plexus are rare, and included among the list of such tumors is metastasis. We report a case of lung carcinoma metastasizing to the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle. This mass was isodense on unenhanced CT and demonstrated moderate to marked enhancement after intravenous contrast medium administration. Follow-up studies over the course of 2 1/2 months showed hemorrhage into the mass and periventricular enhancement. Confirmation of the diagnosis was made by stereotactic biopsy. The differential diagnosis of choroid plexus masses is reviewed.

During a recent four-year period, 21 patients were referred to the Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital with previously unsuspected posterior uveal melanomas in an eye that had been operated upon for a unilateral cataract. In a retrospective study of choroidal and ciliary body malignant melanomas in black patients, we found that the death rates due to metastatic melanoma after enucleation were equivalent for 39 blacks and 3,339 whites.
