A new isolation procedure of rat C-reactive protein (CRP) by affinity chromatography on amino-coupled phosphorylcolamine-Sepharose is described. CRP serum level of rats injured by turpentine injection or two different arthritis models was determined to test the potency of this protein as an marker of inflammation. The influence of repeated administration of carbon tetrachloride as a hepatotoxic agent was investigated in the same way. It was shown that CRP determination is a useful method to observe the course of experimental inflammations and other tissue injuries as well.

Two surface antigens were isolated from young or adult schistosomes by affinity chromatography with monoclonal antibodies. Vaccination with an antigen having a molecular weight of 155,000 gave partial protection against challenge in some batches of mice and in a group of cynomolgus monkeys. Vaccination with an antigen having a molecular weight of 53,000 gave similar levels of protection in mice. The results demonstrate that protection can be obtained with single antigens, but the precise requirements for reproducible vaccination are as yet unknown.

A new and versatile method for linking biologically active ligands to a polyacrylamide matrix is reported. Active esters of acrylic acid (N-succinimicyl acrylate and N-phthalimidyl acrylate) were synthesized, then copolymerized with acrylamide and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide. An antigen, common for the infective agents of glanders , tularemia, plague, pseudotuberculosis, cholera and brucellosis, has been obtained from the aqueous saline extract of P. pseudomallei by means of affinity chromatography on antibody sorbent. The isolated antigen has proved to be of a protein-polysaccharide-lipid nature, to have insignificant cathode mobility and to constitute a component of O-antigen. The aim of this work was isolation and purification of the major immunodominant protein, Outer surface protein C (OspC) of three members of the species group Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. Our aim was to obtain this protein in a quantity and purity sufficient for immunization of experimental animals. For optimalization of protein purification's yield we used immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC) under different conditions. Fifteen metacestode antigens from Taenia saginata were defined by Laurell crossed immunoelectrophoresis and investigated for their potential use in immunodiagnosis of bovine cysticercosis. Several antigens cross reacted with those of some common cattle parasites. Three of the antigens, designated as numbers 4, 8 and 11, were selected on the basis of their restricted cross reactions and were isolated by affinity chromatography. These antigens showed high sensitivity and specificity values in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for serodiagnosis of bovine cysticercosis.
