Optimizing Concentrated Growth Factor Therapy: Sodium Citrate Reduces Pain in Hair Loss Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent condition causing significant psychosocial distress. While concentrated growth factor (CGF) therapy has emerged as a promising regenerative treatment, the choice of anticoagulant remains a critical but underexplored variable that may affect the growth factor release, and patient experience. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy, procedural pain, and patient satisfaction of CGF prepared with sodium citrate, heparin sodium, or no anticoagulant in patients with AGA. METHODS: This phase 2, multicenter, single-blind, randomized controlled trial

Potassium citrate for stone prevention - Quantifying benefit through the number needed to treat: A narrative review.

To define how reliable the benefits of potassium citrate (KCit) for stone prevention are framing this in terms of the number needed to treat (NNT). A targeted search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library was conducted through January 2025. For studies reporting recurrence rates in treatment and control groups, absolute risk reduction (ARR) and NNT were calculated. Two pivotal randomized trials in recurrent calcium stone formers demonstrated large ARRs with KCit or potassium-magnesium citrate, lowering 3-year recurrence rates from approximately 60%-80% in placebo groups to 10%-30%

Clomiphene Citrate Ameliorates Hyperglycemic Phenotype Induced by Catch-Up Growth in Stunting-Like Drosophila.

Catch-up growth following early life undernutrition is a major risk factor for metabolic dysfunction, including insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Here, we developed a Drosophila melanogaster model of catch-up-growth-associated metabolic dysregulation and used clomiphene citrate (CC) as a pharmacological probe to explore conserved metabolic regulatory pathways. Larvae were maintained on a low-calorie diet until the early third instar and subsequently returned to a standard diet to induce compensatory growth. Metabolic phenotyping included glucose levels, reactive oxygen species (

Rational design and evaluation of the sensing mechanism of a europium(III)-based luminescent turn-ON chemosensor for citrate.

Citrate plays a multifaceted and crucial role as a key intermediate in the Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle or TCA cycle), the central metabolic pathway for energy production or a source of ATP in aerobic organisms. Besides a metabolic regulator, dysregulation of citrate levels is intricately linked to the pathology of multiple diseases, including metabolism in cancer cells. Abnormal citrate concentrations have been associated with kidney stones, inflammation, metabolic disorders, cancers, non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, neurological disorders, etc., highlighting its diagnostic and prognosti

Emerging roles of ATP citrate lyase in kidney diseases: from pathogenic driver to therapeutic target.

ATP-citrate lyase (ACLY) is a crucial cytosolic and nuclear enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of acetyl-CoA from citrate, serving as a central metabolic node linking carbohydrate metabolism to de novo lipogenesis and histone acetylation. Accumulating evidence positions ACLY not merely as a metabolic enzyme but as a key pathogenic driver in various kidney diseases. This review systematically examines the multifaceted roles of ACLY in renal physiology and pathology. During development, ACLY is essential for nephron progenitor cell maintenance and nephrogenesis. In diabetic kidney disease, hype

Metabolism of citrate-mediated PI3K-Akt signaling and primary cilium regulates spatiotemporal craniofacial mineralization.

The repair of craniofacial bones requires high-quality mineralization. The key regulator involved in the difference in mineralization of craniofacial bones remains unknown. As the main component of the bone, citrate regulates hydroxyapatite crystallization. We found that the regional accumulation of citrate caused differences in mineralization. Transcriptome analysis showed that the expression of the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway and primary cilia was significantly different between mineralized and unmineralized areas. Citrate specifically activated the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway to form a positi

Intra-individual reliability of blood bicarbonate responses and gastrointestinal symptoms following sodium citrate supplementation.

BACKGROUND: Sodium citrate (SC) can elevate extracellular buffering capacity, yet the intra-individual reliability of its blood bicarbonate ([HCO₃-]) kinetics and gastrointestinal (GI) responses is unclear, limiting individualized dosing strategies. METHODS: Twelve healthy males (21 ± 1 yr) ingested a solution containing 0.5 g·kg-1 SC on two visits 3-7 days apart. Capillary [HCO₃-] was sampled at baseline and every 30 min to 240 min to derive baseline and peak [HCO₃-], time to peak (TTP), time to exceed +5 and +6 mmol·L-1 above baseline, and area under the curve (AUC). Reliability was quantif

Clomiphene citrate induces changes in human fallopian tube secretory epithelial cells: An in vitro study.

The fallopian tube microenvironment supports gamete transport, fertilization and early embryo development. Any disturbances in this microenvironment can lead to fertilization failure, infertility or ectopic pregnancy. In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of clomiphene citrate (CC) on human PAX8-positive fallopian tube secretory epithelial cells (hPFTSECs) to assess CC-induced alterations in the tubal microenvironment. Human fallopian tube tissues obtained from women undergoing postpartum tubectomy were enzymatically digested, and the isolated hPFTSECs were cultured with CC

Effect of sodium citrate and magnesium sulphate anticoagulation on platelet parameters measured on the Alinity hq analyzer.

INTRODUCTION: EDTA-dependent pseudothrombocytopenia (PTP) may cause spuriously low platelet counts and can be prevented by using alternative anticoagulants, such as sodium citrate (citrate) and magnesium sulphate (MgSO4). However, these anticoagulants may affect platelet parameters depending on the analytical platform. Their effect on platelet measurements using the Abbott Alinity hq hematology analyzer has not previously been evaluated. METHODS: Blood samples from 40 outpatients without known PTP were collected in K2-EDTA, citrate, and MgSO4 tubes. Platelet count, mean platelet volume, and r

The PuNAC2-PutDT regulatory module drives late-stage vacuolar citrate accumulation in pear fruit.

In most fleshy fruits, including apple, cherry, plum, and grape, citric acid content declines during the late stages of fruit development, a process that largely determines fruit flavor. In contrast, pear (Pyrus spp.) exhibits a less common developmental pattern characterized by continued citric acid accumulation during late fruit development. Although similar patterns have been reported in a limited number of other fruit species and germplasms, the molecular mechanisms underlying this developmental trajectory remain largely unknown. Here, comparative analyses of organic acid dynamics among cu

Host inflammation-derived citrate enhances Salmonella Typhimurium pathogenesis by fueling growth and activating virulence.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (STm) infection triggers robust intestinal inflammatory responses during host colonization. Although host inflammatory responses typically function as defense mechanisms, STm subverts these processes by co-opting inflammation-derived metabolites to increase both bacterial proliferation and intestinal colonization. Here, we demonstrate that STm-induced intestinal inflammation results in the significant accumulation of luminal citrate, which plays dual roles in STm pathogenesis, serving as both an anaerobic fermentation substrate to support bacterial growt

Lactate as a Predictor of Citrate Accumulation in Patients Undergoing Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy? A Systematic Review.

Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) is the preferred strategy for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). However, impaired citrate metabolism, observed in patients with liver failure, mitochondrial dysfunction, and/or shock, can result in potentially lethal citrate accumulation (CA). We aimed to evaluate the ability of elevated lactate levels to predict CA in critically ill patients undergoing RCA-CRRT. We performed a comprehensive search in PubMed and Embase databases for studies involving adult critically ill patients who underwent RCA-CRRT, where both CA and lactate levels were ass

Cardiomyocyte lncRNA Cpat maintains cardiac homeostasis and mitochondria function by targeting citrate synthase acetylation.

Myocardial energy metabolism disorders are essential pathophysiology in sepsis-associated myocardial injury. Yet, the underlying mechanisms involving impaired mitochondrial respiratory function upon myocardial injury remain poorly understood. Here we identify an unannotated and cardiomyocyte-enriched long non-coding RNA, Cpat (cardiac-protector-associated transcript), that plays an important role in regulating the dynamics of cardiomyocyte mitochondrial tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Cpat is essential to the mitochondrial respiratory function by targeting key metabolic enzymes and modulating

The TFEB activator clomiphene citrate ameliorates lipid metabolic syndrome pathology by activating lipophagy and lipolysis.

The balance between lipid synthesis and lipid catabolism is critical to maintain energy homeostasis. Lipophagy and lipolysis are two important pathways for lipid selective catabolism. Defects in lipophagy and lipolysis are linked to lipid metabolic diseases. Transcription factor EB (TFEB) is a master regulator of autophagy and lysosome biogenesis, as well as lipid metabolism by promoting expression of genes encoding fat catabolic lipases. Therefore, targeting TFEB provides a novel potential strategy for the treatment of lipid metabolic diseases. In this study, we showed that the TFEB activator
