High-resolution habitat suitability model for Phlebotomus pedifer, the vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in southwestern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus pedifer is the vector for Leishmania aethiopica causing cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in southwestern Ethiopia. Previous research on the transmission dynamics of CL resulted in recommendations for vector control. In order to target these interventions towards affected areas, a comprehensive understanding of the spatial distribution of P. pedifer at high spatial resolution is required. Therefore, this study determined the environmental predictors that facilitate the distribution of P. pedifer and created a map indicating the areas where conditions are suitable for surviva

Weather Extreme Events, Farm Management, and Cocoa Yield in Ecuador.

The frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are increasing, yet their implications for perennial tree crops such as cocoa remain understudied. Existing cocoa-climate evidence is based on mean climate variables, discrete shocks, and concentrated in West and Central Africa. This study addresses these gaps with plot-level cocoa evidence for Ecuador, the world's second-largest exporter, linking the 2016 ESPAC survey to parish-level ET-SCI indices. We estimated the associations of three climate extreme indices: consecutive dry days (CDD), very heavy precipitation days (R20mm), and warm da

Cave microorganisms: hidden players in global greenhouse gas cycling and climate regulation.

Caves are unique among ecosystem types because of their physical structures and biological functions. Embedded in rocks, the geological sett … y beneath the Earth's surface, this review proposes integrating subterranean ecosystems into global climate models, reframing caves as metabolically and functionally active contributors to the planet's climate system rather than isolated geological features.

Overcompensation of vegetation productivity after late-spring frost in the Northern Hemisphere.

Late-spring frost can disrupt plant growth, yet the extent to which vegetation recovers and compensates for frost-induced productivity loss remains poorly understood. Using eddy-covariance carbon flux data, satellite-derived gross primary productivity and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence across the Northern Hemisphere, and multi-year frost manipulative experiments, we show that overcompensation, in which post-frost recovery exceeds loss, occurs in 21.5-41.0% of events, with annual productivity exceeding the non-frost baseline. Overcompensation is strongest at high latitudes, reflecting r

Assessing Air Quality and Health Benefits of Enhanced Management of Forests, Shrublands, and Grasslands Against Wildfires in California.

California wildfires have grown increasingly frequent and intense over recent decades, raising serious public health concerns. In response, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2022 Scoping Plan outlines land management strategies to reduce wildfire risk and associated emissions under various climate change scenarios. This study evaluates the health benefits of CARB's official mitigation pathway, the S3 scenario, compared to a business-as-usual approach, using three global climate models (GCMs) and three future time slices. We apply the GEOS-Chem model to estimate fire-induced PM2.5 conce…

Modelling the distribution in Hawaii of Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) in its gastropod hosts.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm), a parasitic nematode, is expanding its distribution. Human infection, known as angiostrongyliasis, may manifest as eosinophilic meningitis, an emerging infectious disease. The range and incidence of this disease are expanding throughout the tropics and subtropics. Recently, the Hawaiian Islands have experienced an increase in reported cases. This study addresses factors affecting the parasite's distribution and projects its potential future distribution, using Hawaii as a model for its global expansion. Specimens of 37 snail species from the Hawaiian

Incorporating Phylogeography and SDM Projection to Inform Conservation Efforts of the Foundation Seaweed Gloiopeltis furcata sensu lato in the North Pacific Under Climate Change.

Understanding the impact of past climate events on population genetic structuring and range shifts may facilitate predictions of how species will respond to future climate change. Such integrative effort, however, remain rare for the North Pacific benthic ecosystem. Here, we obtained mtDNA cox1 and cpDNA rbcL sequences of 85 populations of the foundation macroalga Gloiopeltis furcata sensu lato (s.l.) in the North Pacific to estimate its lineage structuring and phylogeographic connectivity. We found that G. furcata s.l. harbored high and cryptic lineage diversity, and its present-day biogeogra

Ambient temperature, rainfall, and adverse maternal and child health outcomes in Nigeria: evidence from a national cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Climate change increasingly threatens public health in West Africa, with pregnant women and young children particularly vulnerable. Despite Nigeria's high exposure to climate risks, epidemiological evidence linking temperature and rainfall to maternal and child health remains limited. This study addresses this gap using nationally representative data. METHODS: We analysed data from the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, including 27,783 mother-child pairs. Climate exposures, i.e., daytime land surface temperature (°C) and annual rainfall (mm), were derived from the 2020 N

Psychological pathways linking discrimination to alcohol and marijuana use among LGB young adults during the 2024 presidential election.

During the 2024 US presidential election, a surge in anti-lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) rhetoric contributed to a hostile political climate that intensified the psychological impact of discrimination among LGB young adults. Drawing from minority stress theory and the psychological mediation framework (PMF), exposure to LGBT discrimination may be linked to greater substance use through intrapersonal (sexual orientation rumination and hopelessness) and interpersonal (interpersonal political tension) processes. However, little is known about these indirect pathways and whether they vary as a f

Spatiotemporal trends of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in China under climate variation.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a zoonotic disease caused by the rodent-transmitted orthohantaviruses (HVs), with China possessing the most cases globally. The virus hosts in China are Apodemus agrarius and Rattus norvegicus, and the disease spread is strongly influenced by global climate dynamics. To assess and predict the spatiotemporal trends of HFRS from 2005 to 2098, we collected historical HFRS data in mainland China (2005-2020), historical and projected climate and population data (2005-2098), and spatial variables including biotic, environmental, topographical, and soci

Southern ocean carbon and heat impact on climate.

The Southern Ocean greatly contributes to the regulation of the global climate by controlling important heat and carbon exchanges between the atmosphere and the ocean. Rates of climate change on decadal timescales are therefore impacted by oceanic processes taking place in the Southern Ocean, yet too little is known about these processes. Limitations come both from the lack of observations in this extreme environment and its inherent sensitivity to intermittent processes at scales that are not well captured in current Earth system models. The Southern Ocean Carbon and Heat Impact on Climate pr

Seasonal patterns in human A (H5N1) virus infection: analysis of global cases.

BACKGROUND: Human cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A (H5N1) have high mortality. Despite abundant data on seasonal patterns in influenza epidemics, it is unknown whether similar patterns exist for human HPAI H5N1 cases worldwide. Such knowledge could help decrease avian-to-human transmission through increased prevention and control activities during peak periods. METHODS: We performed a systematic search of published human HPAI H5N1 cases to date, collecting month, year, country, season, hemisphere, and climate data. We used negative binomial regression to predict changes in

Green inclusive leadership and employee green behavior: mediation by green climate and commitment.

Objectives. Drawing upon social exchange theory and the norm activation model, this study examines how green inclusive leadership influences employee green behavior, and proposes a theoretically ordered psychological mechanism through which this influence is explained via green psychological climate and green commitment. Methods. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 477 civil servants working in the public sector. The proposed relationships were tested using PROCESS macro-based mediation analysis. Results. Findings indicate that green inclusive leadership positively predicts employee gr
