False Belief Understanding in Deaf Children With Cochlear Implants.

Theory of mind (ToM) is crucial for social interactions. Previous research has indicated that deaf and hard-of-hearing children born into hearing families (DoH) are at risk of delayed ToM development. However, it is unclear whether this is the case for DoH children who receive cochlear implants (CIs) before and around the second year of life. The present study aimed to investigate false belief understanding (FBU) in DoH children with CIs. The relationships between false belief task (FBT) performance, sentence comprehension, age at implantation, duration of CI use, and Speech Recognition Thresh

Evaluation of Automatic Directional Processing with Cochlear Implant Recipients.

BACKGROUND: For cochlear implant (CI) recipients, speech recognition in noise is consistently poorer compared with recognition in quiet. Directional processing improves performance in noise and can be automatically activated based on acoustic scene analysis. The use of adaptive directionality with CI recipients is new and has not been investigated thoroughly, especially utilizing the recipients' preferred everyday signal processing, dynamic range, and/or noise reduction. PURPOSE: This study utilized CI recipients' preferred everyday signal processing to evaluate four directional microphone op

Use of a Smartphone App for Cochlear Implant Patients With Tinnitus.

Purpose Smartphone apps for tinnitus relief are now emerging; however, research supporting their use and effectiveness is lacking. Research has shown that Tinnitus Therapy sounds intended for individuals with acoustic hearing provide relief to some patients using cochlear implants (CIs) with tinnitus. Here, we evaluated the use and acceptability of a smartphone app to help CI patients with tinnitus. Method Participants completed a laboratory trial (n = 19) and an at-home trial (n = 14) using the ReSound Tinnitus Relief app to evaluate its acceptability and effectiveness in reducing their tinni

Dynamic current steering with phantom electrode in cochlear implants.

Phantom electrode (PE) stimulation can extend the lower limit of pitch perception with cochlear implants (CIs) by using simultaneous out-of-phase stimulation of the most apical primary electrode and the adjacent basal compensating electrode. The total electrical field may push the excitation pattern beyond the most apical electrode to elicit a lower pitch, depending on the ratio of current between the compensating and primary electrodes (i.e., the compensation coefficient σ). This study tested the hypothesis that dynamic current steering of PE stimuli can be implemented by varying σ over time

Cochlear Implant Nonuse: Insight from Deaf Adults.

Research examining the outcome of pediatric cochlear implantation consists of certain limitations, including the use of assessments that are often restricted to auditory-spoken skills, biased recruitment practices, and lack of consideration for identity development. To better understand the long-term outcome of implantation, it is vital to seek out individuals who decide to stop using their device and elicit feedback related to their decision. Thus, 11 adults, who were past cochlear implant (CI) users, were interviewed to gain insight into factors that had led to their decision regarding cochl…

Supporting cell survival after cochlear implant surgery.

Supporting cells (SCs) provide structure and maintain an environment that allows hair cells to receive and transmit signals in the auditory pathway. After insult to hair cells and ganglion cells, SCs respond by marking unsalvageable cells for death and maintain structural integrity. Although the histopathology after cochlear implantation has been described regarding hair cells and neural structures, surviving SCs in the implanted ear have not. We present a patient whose posthumous examination of an implanted cochlea demonstrated SC survival. This finding has implications for SC function in mai…

Cochlear implants for mumps deafness: two paediatric cases.

BACKGROUND: Good outcomes have been reported regarding the use of cochlear implants for mumps deafness. The mumps virus induces meningitis and/or encephalitis, which can cause central nervous system damage resulting in retrolabyrinthine hearing loss, for which a cochlear implant would be less effective. CASES: We installed a cochlear implant in two patients with bilateral mumps deafness; one achieved a good result with the cochlear implant, but the other did not. We discuss two possible reasons for the different outcomes. Case 1 was a three-year-old girl with bilateral parotid swelling, vomit

Cochlear implant and thiamine-responsive megaloblastic anemia syndrome.

Thiamine-responsive megaloblastic anemia syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder defined by the occurrence of megaloblastic anemia, diabetes mellitus, and bilateral sensorineural deafness, responding in varying degrees to thiamine treatment. We report a precedence case for the treatment of deafness associated with the typical triad of thiamine-responsive megaloblastic anemia in a 4-year-old boy who showed a poor use of preoperative hearing aids but demonstrated significant improvements in hearing ability 1 year after receiving a cochlear implant.
