Cognitive decline as a manifestation of mitochondrial disorders (mitochondrial dementia).

Mitochondrial disorders, in particular respiratory chain diseases (RCDs), present either as single organ problem or as multi-system disease. One of the most frequently affected organs in RCDs, in addition to the skeletal muscle, is the central nervous system (CNS). CNS manifestations of RCDs include epilepsy, stroke-like episodes, migraine-like headache, ataxia, spasticity, movement disorders, psychosis, demyelination, calcification, but also dementia. Cognitive impairment may be a feature of syndromic as well as non-syndromic RCDs. Syndromic RCDs associated with cognitive impairment include M

Cognitive change trajectories in virally suppressed HIV-infected individuals indicate high prevalence of disease activity.

BACKGROUND: The longitudinal rate and profile of cognitive decline in persons with stable, treated, and virally suppressed HIV infection is not established. To address this question, the current study quantifies the rate of cognitive decline in a cohort of virally suppressed HIV+ persons using clinically relevant definitions of decline, and determine cognitive trajectories taking into account historical and baseline HAND status. METHODS: Ninety-six HIV+ (clinically stable and virally undetectable) and 44 demographically comparable HIV- participants underwent standard neuropsychological testin

A cognitive map for value-guided choice in ventromedial prefrontal cortex.

The prefrontal cortex is crucial for economic decision-making and representing the value of options. However, how such representations facilitate flexible decisions remains unknown. We reframe economic decision-making in prefrontal cortex in line with representations of structure within the medial temporal lobe because such cognitive map representations are known to facilitate flexible behaviour. Specifically, we framed choice between different options as a navigation process in value space. Here we show that choices in a 2D value space defined by reward magnitude and probability were represen

Inside the parrot beak-and-tongue apparatus: Unlocking a model system for dexterity research.

Dexterity, the flexible and precise control of objects, requires the integration of cognitive abilities, motor coordination, and anatomical specializations. Due to the evolutionary significance of the opposable thumb, dexterity research has traditionally focused on primate species. However, based on a review of current knowledge in parrot morphology, cognition, and neurobiology, we propose that parrots represent a highly promising model system for dexterity research. We highlight lineage-specific morphological novelties that turn the parrot beak-and-tongue apparatus into a multifunctional tool

Broad skill generalization with an extra robotic body part.

Our ability to transfer motor skills across tools and contexts is central to how we adapt to an increasingly technological world. From smartphones to wearable robotics, modern technologies demand flexible motor control that generalizes beyond specific learning contexts. Robotic limbs for body augmentation are designed to increase the body's degrees of freedom while coordinating with our biological limbs.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 While these devices perform well in controlled settings, their real-world effectiveness remains uncertain.9,10 This raises a fundamental question: can the brain form flexible mo

Reconfigured functional network dynamics in adult moyamoya disease: a resting-state fMRI study.

Treatment of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) in adult moyamoya disease (MMD) is still unclear because of its unveiled neural synchronization. This study introduced a dynamic measurement of connectivity number entropy (CNE) to characterize both spatial and temporal dimensions of network interactions. Fifty-one patients with MMD were recruited (27 with VCI and 24 with intact cognition), as well as 26 normal controls (NCs). Static network properties were first examined to confirm its aberrance in MMD with VCI. Then, the dynamic measurement of CNE was used to detect the deteriorated flexibilit

A Transformer Approach for Cognitive Impairment Classification and Prediction.

INTRODUCTION: Early classification and prediction of Alzheimer disease (AD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) with noninvasive approaches is a long-standing challenge. This challenge is further exacerbated by the sparsity of data needed for modeling. Deep learning methods offer a novel method to help address these challenging multiclass classification and prediction problems. METHODS: We analyzed 3 target feature-sets from the National Alzheimer Coordinating Center (NACC) dataset: (1) neuropsychological (cognitive) data; (2) patient health history data; and (3) the combination of

Cognitive reserve and adaptive resilience: a conceptual analysis of a cross-species framework for neuropsychology and cognitive aging.

Why do some older adults maintain effective cognitive functioning despite substantial age-related brain change or neuropathology, whereas others with comparable neural burden show marked impairment? Related questions arise in comparative research, where organisms exposed to similar biological or environmental challenges may show markedly different adaptation patterns. Although these phenomena have traditionally been examined in separate literatures, they converge on a broader problem: how living systems maintain, recover, or reorganize function under challenge. This article develops a cross-sp

[Intervention focused on resources to reduce anxiety and depression disorders in cancer patients: A pilot study].

INTRODUCTION: Cancer, a widespread chronic disease, represented 400,000 diagnoses in France in 2017. The diagnoses as well as the treatments are a major source of stress for most patients concerned. Secondary effects may be painful and disturbing (pain, nausea, fatigue, loss of social and/or professional status, anxiety of death), and may lead to maladaptive coping strategies (avoidant coping), psychological inflexibility, anxiety, depression, and suicide risks which are twice as important as in the general population. Research in the field of psychotherapy for cancer patients represents an im

The Goal Processing Scale: cognitive correlates of an ecologically valid measure of executive functioning in mild traumatic brain injury.

The objective of this study was to further validate the Goal Processing Scale (GPS), an ecologically valid functional assessment of executive functioning requiring planning and executing a complex goal. Veterans (N = 69, mean age = 44.5 years) with a history of chronic mild traumatic brain injury and self-reported cognitive difficulties completed the GPS and neuropsychological measures of working memory, sustained attention, mental flexibility, inhibition, and memory during participation in one of three studies. Cognitive weaknesses or impairments on the NIH toolbox cognition battery in children and adolescents: base rates in a normative sample and proposed methods for classification.

INTRODUCTION: The National Institutes of Health Toolbox for Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function Cognition Battery (NIHTB-CB) is a brief neuropsychological battery for the assessment of crystalized (i.e., vocabulary and word reading) and fluid cognition (i.e., working memory, visual episodic memory, processing speed, and executive functions). This study examined the frequency of low NIHTB-CB scores and proposes flexible algorithms for identifying cognitive weaknesses and impairment among youth. METHODS: Participants were 1,269 youth from the NIHTB-CB normative sample who did not

Peripheral nerve injury impairs the ability to maintain behavioural flexibility following acute stress in the rat.

Chronic neuropathic pain often leads to impaired cognition and reduced behavioural flexibility. This study used a rat model to investigate if a peripheral nerve injury, with or without an additional acute psychological stress, alters behavioural flexibility and goal directed behaviour as measured by sensitivity to devaluation. Neuropathic pain was induced by a chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve. CCI, sham-injury and naïve rats were trained to press two levers for two rewards. In outcome devaluation tests, one of the rewards was devalued by pre-feeding it to satiety, immedia

Task context load induces reactive cognitive control: An fMRI study on cortical and brain stem activity.

Cognitive control is a highly dynamic process that relies on flexible engagement of prefrontal areas and of neuromodulatory systems in order to adapt to changing demands. A range of internal and external factors come into play when individuals engage in a task requiring cognitive control. Here we investigated whether increased working memory (WM) demands would induce a flexible change in cognitive control mode in young healthy individuals. We developed a novel variant of the well-known AX-continuous performance task (AX-CPT). We manipulated the cognitive demands of maintaining task-relevant co
