Schwannomas are tumours originating in the Schwann cells of the peripheral nerves. The appearance in the colon is extremely rare, and there are no known cases in the literature of schwannomas of the colon and rectum described in children. These tumours are usually asymptomatic, but can produce non-specific and gastrointestinal symptoms. The clinical presentation as intestinal intussusception is infrequent. We present a case of an 11-year-old girl with sigmoid swchannoma presented clinically as a colonic intussusception with abdominal pain, rectal bleeding and constipation of 10 days. An intest

An 80-year-old man was diagnosed with rectal cancer and underwent Hartmann's procedure. Although no tumors were identified during the preoperative examination, gross examination of the resected specimen incidentally revealed a submucosal tumor that was 9 mm in diameter at the oral side and located in the proximal stump of the specimen from the sigmoid colon. We suspected a concurrent gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and performed a histopathological examination. An L-shaped nodular lesion measuring 9 × 6 mm was histologically composed of a patternless proliferation of spindle cells interm

UNLABELLED: A 58-year-old woman presented with a solitary myofibroma that arose in the sigmoid colon. Computed tomography revealed a highly enhanced intramural mass (1.3-cm maximum diameter) in the proximal sigmoid colon. Histologically, the tumor exhibited a biphasic growth pattern, which comprised haphazardly arranged, interwoven fascicles of plump, myoid-appearing spindle cells with elongated nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, and more cellular areas of primitive-appearing polygonal cells that were arranged in a hemangiopericytomatous pattern. The tumor cells were positive for smoo

An 82-year-old man visited a medical clinic for dyschezia. His serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level was 16ng/ml. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed an 8×7cm tumor in the sigmoid colon. Endoscopy showed that the sigmoid colon was insufficiently dilated but no mucosal lesions were present. Histological examination of biopsy specimens did not show malignant cells. Sigmoidectomy was performed due to suspected submucosal tumor. The final pathological diagnosis was mucoid carcinoma with features of a submucosal tumor which had no mucosal lesions. Mucoid carcinoma with features of a su

Adult intussusception is rare and most often associated with cancer. We report a case of intussuscepted sigmoid colon into the rectum protruding from the anus of a 47-year-old woman. The cause of the intussusception was sigmoid colon cancer. We removed the intussuscepted part of the sigmoid colon as well as the rectum and regional lymph nodes. The patient recovered uneventfully and there has been no evidence of recurrence of the cancer.

A 16-year-old adolescent boy was admitted to our hospital with severe lower abdominal pain and was found to have peritonitis, probably caused by acute appendicitis. At laparotomy, we found a paper-thin, dilated sigmoid colon; the seromuscular layer on the antimesenteric side was torn, and the untorn mucosa showed a pinpoint perforation. The seromuscular defect had spread circumferentially to involve the entire circumference of the colon wall. We performed sigmoidectomy, and the patient recovered uneventfully. This case showed many similarities, both in terms of the macroscopic and pathological

Volvulus of the large bowel is the third most common cause of colonic obstruction. A patient with colonic obstruction or delayed small intestinal transit may frequently have bacterial overgrowth and increased breath hydrogen (H(2)) and/or methane (CH(4)) excretion because the bacterium can contact with food residues for a longer time. A 39 year old woman attended our hospital with complaints of abdominal pain and distension. This patient's abdominal radiograph showed an inverted U-shaped shadow. The fasting breath CH(4) level was 26 ppm. An endoscopic procedure was immediately carried out with

INTRODUCTION: Mesenteric panniculitis of the sigmoid colon is a rare occurrence in surgical practice. The aim of this article is to present a case of mesenteric panniculitis of the sigmoid colon and a short review of the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reviewed the hospital record of a 63-year-old man who presented with a palpable mass in the left abdomen and clinical signs of a partial bowel obstruction. The pre-operative impression was a possible cancer of the sigmoid colon. A laparotomy was performed through a midline incision. The mesentery was found to be markedly thickened, constricte

We report a case of postoperative recurrence of liposarcoma of the mesenterium successfully treated by chemotherapy using ifosfamide (IFM) and cisplatin (CDDP). A 58-year-old man presented with a strange feeling in the lower abdomen. Enhanced computed tomography showed enhanced non-epithelial tumor in the pelvic space. The tumor moved on palpation, so we diagnosed liposarcoma from the mesenterium, and resected the tumor on 22 August, 2002. The pleomorphic liposarcoma was 11 x 14 x 7 cm, growing from the mesenterium of the sigmoid colon, and weighed 640 g. We performed re-operation due to pelvi

PURPOSE: To identify organs at risk (OAR) and analyze the dose volume histograms (DVHs) for intracavitary brachytherapy in cancer of the cervix. Late toxicities are our concern in treatment of cancer cervix especially as it is presenting in younger age population.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with cancer of the cervix were treated using CT and MRI compatible, high dose rate, (HDR) applicators. CT images were acquired with the intra-uterine tube and colpostats in place and subsequently imported into Varian Brachyvision planning software. We identified the gross tumour volume (GTV) and organs

BACKGROUND: Copper T intrauterine devices (IUDs) remain the mainstay of family planning measures in developing countries, but have been associated with serious complications such as bleeding, perforation and migration to adjacent organs or omentum. Although perforation of the uterus by an IUD is not uncommon, migration to the sigmoid colon is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of migration of an IUD to the sigmoid colon.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old woman who had an IUD (Copper T), inserted 1 month after delivery, presented, 7 months later, with secondary amenorrhea and transient pelvic cra

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Decompression tube placement improves outcome in colonic pseudo-obstruction (CP) which is refractory to conservative measures, especially if the decompression tube is placed proximal to the hepatic flexure. We evaluate the ability of a sigmoid stiffener to facilitate more proximal colonoscopy and decompression tube placement.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A sigmoid stiffener is used in the standard fashion during colonoscopic decompression for pseudo-obstruction. After cecal wire placement, the colonoscope is withdrawn, leaving the stiffener and wire in place. By passing th

A case of a pedunculated adenomatous polyp of the sigmoid colon was found to have a primary focus of signet ring cell carcinoma. Histologic examination of the medium-sized polyp was consistent with an adenoma to carcinoma sequence for signet ring cell carcinoma of the colon, similar to that for the common adenocarcinomas.

A 39-year-old woman presented to the emergency department complaining of rectal bleeding and abdominal pain 7 h after sitting on a water display fountain. On examination, the abdomen was rigid, and the patient had a prolapsed rectum with rectal bleeding. A chest radiograph demonstrated free air. On emergent exploratory laparotomy, the patient had a perforated sigmoid colon at the rectosigmoid junction with gross abdominal soilage. The patient survived to hospital discharge. This case provides a review of the literature regarding hydrostatic injury to the colon and other self-induced colorectal

Partial sigmoidectomy and then after 84 days aortic valve replacement were performed as a staged operation on a patient with Heyde syndrome, consisting of aortic stenosis and angiodysplasia of the sigmoid colon. An emergent sigmoidectomy was performed because of continuous bleeding from angiodysplasia of the sigmoid colon. Postoperative arteriography showed the persistence of angiodysplasia. Endoscopic examination of the residual angiodysplasia was performed before and after valve replacement and there was no morphological change.

The authors evaluated the sigmoidal administration of methohexital, the effect of methohexital concentration (1% versus 2%), the effect of dosage (25 mg/kg versus 15 mg/kg) on sleep-success rate, administration - sleep time, recovery time and the effect of aspirating the residual methohexital on recovery time. The study demonstrated that both 1% solution and 25 mg/kg of sigmoidal methohexital were independently associated with significantly higher sleep success rate and faster onset of sleep compared with 2% and 15 mg/kg of sigmoidal methohexital solution respectively. The recovery time was si
