Consequences of COVID-19-related lockdowns and reopenings on emergency hospitalizations in pediatric patients in Denmark during 2020-2021.

UNLABELLED: There is a considerable burden of children being hospitalized due to infectious diseases worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique opportunity to examine effects of worldwide efforts to control spread of infection. We aimed to investigate overall age-specific hospitalizations due to viral and bacterial infections and diseases triggered by respiratory tract infections during and after lockdown. This nationwide register-based observational study included children from 29 days to 17 years old hospitalized in all Danish pediatric emergency departments during the years 2015-202

New Approach to the Surveillance of Pediatric Infectious Diseases From Ambulatory Pediatricians in the Digital Era.

BACKGROUND: Many ambulatory networks in several countries have established syndromic surveillance systems to detect outbreaks of different illnesses. Here, we describe a new Pediatric and Ambulatory Research in Infectious diseases network that combined automated data extraction from the computers of primary care pediatricians. METHODS: Pediatricians who used the same software, AxiSanté 5-Infansoft for electronic medical records were specially trained in infectious diseases, encouraged to comply with French treatments' recommendations, use of point-of-care tests and vaccination guidelines. Revaccination With Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine and Infectious Disease Morbidity: A Danish Register-based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that revaccination with live vaccines is associated with reductions in off-target morbidity and mortality. We examined if revaccination with the live measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR) is associated with a lower rate of off-target infections. METHODS: We performed a register-based nationwide cohort study that included 295559 children born in Denmark from April 2004 to December 2010. The cohort were followed from age 47 months (1 month before turning age 4 years, which is the recommended age of the second MMR [MMR-2]) until age 60 months. In Cox regr

A Methodology for Determining Which Diseases Warrant Care in a High-Level Containment Care Unit.

Although the concept of high-level containment care (HLCC or 'biocontainment'), dates back to 1969, the 2014-2016 outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) brought with it a renewed emphasis on the use of specialized HLCC units in the care of patients with EVD. Employment of these units in the United States and Western Europe resulted in a significant decrease in mortality compared to traditional management in field settings. Moreover, this employment appeared to significantly lessen the risk of nosocomial transmission of disease; no secondary cases occurred among healthcare workers in these units

A Guide to Utilization of the Microbiology Laboratory for Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases: 2018 Update by the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Society for Microbiology.

The critical nature of the microbiology laboratory in infectious disease diagnosis calls for a close, positive working relationship between the physician/advanced practice provider and the microbiologists who provide enormous value to the healthcare team. This document, developed by experts in laboratory and adult and pediatric clinical medicine, provides information on which tests are valuable and in which contexts, and on tests that add little or no value for diagnostic decisions. This document presents a system-based approach rather than specimen-based approach, and includes bloodstream and

Travel-associated infection presenting in Europe (2008-12): an analysis of EuroTravNet longitudinal, surveillance data, and evaluation of the effect of the pre-travel consultation.

BACKGROUND: Travel is important in the acquisition and dissemination of infection. We aimed to assess European surveillance data for travel-related illness to profile imported infections, track trends, identify risk groups, and assess the usefulness of pre-travel advice. METHODS: We analysed travel-associated morbidity in ill travellers presenting at EuroTravNet sites during the 5-year period of 2008-12. We calculated proportionate morbidity per 1000 ill travellers and made comparisons over time and between subgroups. We did 5-year trend analyses (2008-12) by testing differences in proportion

[Healthcare response to bioterrorism].

Bioterrorists seek to use highly virulent pathogens to cause social and economic disruption. Historical agents such as anthrax, Yersinia pestis and botulinum toxin can easily be produced, whereas others such as hemorragic fever virus require much more sophisticated infrastructure and government-scale resources. In the near future, with the spread of new biotechnologies, bioterrorists may produce new transgenic pathogens. Epidemiological surveillance and diagnostic capacities should thus be more reactive. Real-time epidemiological surveillance together with a network of high-security laboratori

Airborne infectious disease and the suppression of pulmonary bioaerosols.

The current understanding of airborne pathogen spread in relation to the new methods of suppressing exhaled bioaerosols using safe surface-active materials, such as isotonic saline, is reviewed here. We discuss the physics of bioaerosol generation in the lungs, what is currently known about the relationship between expired bioaerosols and airborne infectious disease and current methods of airborne infectious disease containment. We conclude by reviewing recent experiments that suggest the delivery of isotonic saline can significantly diminish exhaled aerosol--generated from airway lining fluid

[Bioterrorism - a challenge for public health services].

Within the range of highly contagious diseases there are well-known diseases, and those caused by newly detected infectious agents (i. e. SARS) or, in the worst case, bioterror agents. Public Health Services as well as clinicians and practitioners will be confronted with a new paradigm of infectious disease control: not only the infectious agent itself, the constitution of the host or the environment will influence the spread of a disease, but also globalization, mobile societies and new communication systems. Thus, the emergence, respectively the re-emergence of such diseases demands new or b

Surveillance of infectious diseases in the Italian military as pre-requisite for tailored vaccination programme.

Surveillance and control of infectious diseases in the Italian military include prompt reporting of all occurring cases and prophylaxis through compulsory vaccination practices. The last mandatory immunisation programme in the Italian military was launched in 1998 (more than 10 years after the previous programme was introduced in 1986-1987) and it was planned according to the epidemiological data herein reported. The incidence rates (number of cases x 100000 subjects) of infectious diseases notified during the period 1976-1980 were compared with the corresponding figures notified 15 years late

Multiple dose vaccination against childhood diseases: high coverage with the first dose remains crucial for eradication.

The high vaccination coverage required to eradicate communicable diseases like measles, mumps and rubella, with a single dose of vaccine, has prompted many countries to introduce a second dose. In this paper we investigate the conditions to eradicate childhood diseases with multiple doses of vaccine by obtaining explicit analytical solutions to the classical compartment model that assumes an age-independent force of infection and conceptualizes the host population as divided into maternally protected (P), susceptibles (S), latents (E), infectious (I), and removed (R). The solutions allow a qua

Eradicating syphilis? Alternative projects, failures, and infectious disease control in the French colonial empire (1916-1940).

The inter-war period was a time of mobilisation against syphilis in France and its colonial empire. The spread of the disease was perceived as a threat to the economic development of its colonies, particularly because of the labour shortages it might cause. In 1916, a new player appeared on the scene of the French efforts to control the disease: the Institut Prophylactique, founded by Arthur Vernes. Its project was nothing less than to eradicate the disease, and its activities in the colonies expanded significantly during the 1920s and 1930s. However, the Institut Prophylactique has been large

One health research to mitigate health burden of American trypanosomiasis in Mexico.

American trypanosomiasis (AT), or Chagas disease, is an ancient disease with an interesting history. Despite efforts to control AT, the global burden of this neglected vector-borne disease persists. More than six million people around the world are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), and about 75 million are at risk of infection in the Americas. Mexico is one of the countries most affected by AT with 4 million people at risk of infection with T. cruzi. Approximately 60 % of the accumulated confirmed cases occurred in the southeast region; however, an increase in the number of cases was

[Interpretation of the "Technical Guidelines for Disinfection in Epidemic Prevention and Control of Large-Scale Events"].

The "Technical Guideline for Epidemic Prevention and Control Disinfection in Large-Scale Events"(hereinafter referred to as "the Guideline"), organized and compiled by the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, was officially released in April 2024. This guideline aims to ensure the effective implementation of large-scale group activities, mitigate the impact of infectious disease outbreaks on such events, and maintain hygiene and safety standards at event venues. During the compilation process, data were systematically collected in alignment with epidemic prevention requireme

Coordinating virus research: The Virus Infectious Disease Ontology.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted immense work on the investigation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Rapid, accurate, and consistent interpretation of generated data is thereby of fundamental concern. Ontologies-structured, controlled, vocabularies-are designed to support consistency of interpretation, and thereby to prevent the development of data silos. This paper describes how ontologies are serving this purpose in the COVID-19 research domain, by following principles of the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry and by reusing existing ontologies such as the Infectious Disease Ontology
