BACKGROUND/AIMS: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical role of community-centered research in addressing public health challenges, particularly in low-income settings. This study examines the experiences of conducting a mixed-methods COVID-19 vaccine uptake study among healthcare workers in Sierra Leone-a country with a history of infectious disease outbreaks and a fragile healthcare system.
METHODS: Twenty-four (24) in-depth qualitative interviews and 1,001 healthcare workers across six districts completed a 109-item quantitative survey. Thematic analysis was conducted for the q

This analytical and qualitative study aimed to identify how workers in the Family Health Strategy perceive the risks they are exposed to at work. Thematic analysis and the reference framework of the work process were used to examine the contents of interviews with 48 subjects (community health agents, nurses, nursing auxiliaries and physicians). The workers noticed the following risks: physical and moral violence, typical work accident, emotional exhaustion, lack of problem-solving ability and occupational disease. The results predominantly show the connection with the object / subject of the

INTRODUCTION: Drug alerts aimed at both people who use drugs and health workers help to prevent acute harms from unpredictable illicit drug markets and by equipping health workers to handle unusual drug events and share vital information with service users. However, there has never been an alert produced for anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), an important class of illicit drugs. We report on the development, implementation and community receptivity of the first-ever AAS community drug alert.
METHODS: Based on findings from samples collected during the first month of an AAS checking trial con

BACKGROUND: Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) community have greater risk of mental health disorders compared to the general population, however most evidence is from young people. We sought to systematically review and summarise the evidence for the burden and risk of mental health disorders.
METHODS: A PRISMA-compliant literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, PsycInfo, Scopus, and CINAHL for articles published from 2000 to 2024. Quantitative or mixed-methods studies that reported mental health outcomes among

The Slovenian experience of establishing community-based mental health (CBMH) services, including expanding CBMH centers, securing funding, enhancing training, and involving mental health workers, offers a valuable example for the Philippines and other LMICs. It shows that community-based mental health reform needs professionals, empowered communities, and capable local leaders. This paper emphasizes the applicability of Slovenian insights in LMICs, using the Philippines as an example. It highlights the roles of barangay officials and BHWs in implementing CBMH, as they can bridge policy and pr

Population aging in the Philippines requires innovative, community-based approaches to strengthen geriatric care delivery. This article highlights the potential of Barangay Health Workers as frontline partners in promoting healthy aging through early detection, chronic disease monitoring, and coordinated referral services. Expanding BHW roles through standardized training and policy support can address gaps in geriatric healthcare access. A strengthened community health workforce can contribute to an age-responsive and sustainable Philippine healthcare system.

BACKGROUND: We describe how High Impact Practices (HIPs) in family planning (FP) were adapted across Kenya, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe to maintain access to services in response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
METHODS: Using a qualitative data collection tool structured around 3 HIP categories (service delivery, demand creation, and enabling environment), adaptations in FP programs during the pandemic were documented. We describe adaptations made to 3 specific HIPs: mobile outreach, community health workers, and digital health for social and behavior change.

Hurricane Helene exacerbated maternal health gaps in Western North Carolina's rural communities. Strengthening maternal care infrastructure, enhancing data collection, expanding mental health resources, addressing housing and food insecurity, and investing in community health workers are crucial for building health care resilience, reducing disparities, and protecting pregnant women and children during future climate-related disasters.

The transgender sex worker experience of health in Singapore is multidimensional, working at the intersections of culture, social class, and gendered marginalization. Drawing on in-depth interviews with transgender sex workers in the context of Singapore's extreme neoliberalism and located within a larger culture-centered intervention that emerged through an academic-activist-community partnership, this study foregrounds the everyday meanings of health among transgender sex workers who are marginalized. We offer a discursive register for theorizing violence as disruption of health. Participant

INTRODUCTION: In the period shortly after discharge from inpatient to community mental health care, people are at increased risk of self-harm, suicide, and readmission to hospital. Discharge interventions including peer support have shown potential, and there is some evidence that community-based peer support reduces readmissions. However, systematic reviews of peer support in mental health services indicate poor trial quality and a lack of reporting of how peer support is distinctive from other mental health support. This study is designed to establish the clinical and cost effectiveness of a

Postoperative readmissions in orthopedic surgery remain a persistent cause of patient morbidity and increased healthcare costs, many of which are preventable through improved care coordination. Social workers are uniquely positioned to address psychosocial and structural barriers influencing postoperative recovery. This narrative review examined peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2025 using PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Google Scholar. Eligible studies included U.S.-based articles evaluating social work roles in discharg

Background: Microarray patches (MAPs) are innovative, needle-free vaccine delivery systems, suitable for administration by minimally trained health care workers or trained community health workers. Their introduction may transform immunization programmes, particularly for vaccines where high coverage is required for population immunity, such as measles, and where vaccine delivery is challenging, such as in low- and middle-income countries. Recognizing the need to understand how best to tailor these products to reflect country priorities, workshops on measles and rubella MAPs (MR-MAPs) were con…

Suicide is a critical public health concern globally. Sex workers experience a disproportionate burden of social and health inequities driven by forms of violence, stigma, and criminalization, yet empirical research on suicidality is limited. This study longitudinally investigated the burden and socio-structural correlates of recent suicidality among women sex workers in Vancouver, Canada. Data (2010-2017) were drawn from a community-based, prospective cohort of cis and trans women sex workers across Metro Vancouver. Women completed biannual interviewer-administered questionnaires, and correla
