Cross-cultural validation of the multidimensional condom attitude scale (MCAS) in youth from the United States, Spain, and Latin America.

BackgroundCondoms remain among the most effective methods for preventing HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, consistent use among youth remains suboptimal worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties and cross-cultural measurement invariance of the Multidimensional Condom Attitude Scale (MCAS) among young adults from 11 countries.MethodsA total of 5656 participants aged 18-26 years from ten Spanish-speaking countries and the United States completed the MCAS online. Confirmatory factor analyses and multigroup invariance testing were performed us…

Factors associated with sexually transmitted reinfections, number of sexual partners and condom use among previously infected young people.

BackgroundSexually transmitted infections (STIs) are prevalent in young people. Digital interventions promoting safer sexual behaviours are low-cost and scalable. We use data from a randomised controlled trial of one such potential intervention (safetxt) to investigate factors associated with STI reinfection and risky sexual behaviours.MethodsWe use data from 6248 young people with STIs recruited from 92 UK sexual health clinics. Multivariable logistic regression models were developed with the outcomes: reinfection, condom use at last sex and number of sexual partners (≤1 or >1) at 1 year. A p

Assessing Condom Use and Views on HIV Counselling and Testing among TVET College Students in Limpopo Province, South Africa.

South Africa's population is predominantly young, presenting a powerful resource for the country. Despite this, adolescents and young people remain at the epicentre of the HIV epidemic, particularly adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). There are limited studies that investigate the views on HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) and condom use among adolescents and young people, and college students in particular, in South Africa. This cross-sectional study assessed condom use among college students and their views and opinions on HCT. Utilising an adapted questionnaire from the Australian Seco

Long-acting reversible contraception and condom use: A cohort study of female adolescents and young adults in New York City.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine whether condom use varied between adolescents and young women using long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) vs non-LARC hormonal methods and assess if the initiation of LARC was associated with lower condom use. STUDY DESIGN: This study used data from a large longitudinal study of sexually active females aged 13-25 years. Questionnaires assessed contraception, condom use, sexual history, and partner characteristics at the baseline visit and every 6 months. Log-binomial regression analyses examined associations between hormonal contraceptive method

Insertive condom-protected and condomless vaginal sex both have a profound impact on the penile immune correlates of HIV susceptibility.

The penis is the primary site of HIV acquisition in heterosexual men. Elevated penile inflammatory cytokines increase sexual acquisition risk, and topically applied cytokines enhance foreskin HIV susceptibility in an explant model. However, the impact of penile-vaginal sex on these immune parameters is undefined. Heterosexual couples were recruited to the Sex, Couples and Science (SECS) Study, with the collection of penile swabs, semen, cervico-vaginal secretions, and blood after a period of abstinence, and repeated sampling up to 72 hours after either condomless (n = 30) or condom-protected (

Analysis of condom evidence in forensic science: Background survey of the human vaginal matrix using DRIFTS and pyrolysis-GC/MS.

Condom traces are increasingly detected from victims of sexual assault, mostly from vaginal swabs. Protocols have been developed for the ana … gated after extraction with hexane, as it is the one targeted for silicone-based lubricants used in condoms. Infrared spectroscopy outlined the presence of various proteins and lipids in all the samples, and the spectral regions 1000-1850 cm-1 and 2700-3600 cm-1 were identified as the most relevant zones of the spectra. Pyrolysis-GC results confirmed the …

Factors Associated with Condom Use among a Sample of Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) Residing in Rural Oklahoma.

Public health literature often neglects populations from rural communities, particularly with men who have sex with men (MSM). Although HIV/STI infections are decreasing slightly, there is an increase within rural MSM, thus opening the door for further research on condom use behavior in a rural context. In-depth interviews were conducted with 40 MSM in rural Oklahoma regarding their condom use and sexual behaviors. A qualitative analysis revealed five themes with respect to condom usage: physical discomfort of condoms, relationship trust, usage based on the type of sexual act, substance use, a…

Risk of sexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus with antiretroviral therapy, suppressed viral load and condom use: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The Public Health Agency of Canada reviewed sexual transmission of HIV between serodiscordant partners to support examination of the criminal justice system response to HIV nondisclosure by the Department of Justice of Canada. We sought to determine HIV transmission risk when an HIV-positive partner takes antiretroviral therapy, has a suppressed viral load or uses condoms. METHODS: We conducted an overview and systematic review update by searching MEDLINE and other databases (Jan. 1, 2007, to Mar. 13, 2017; and Nov. 1, 2012, to Apr. 27, 2017, respectively). Social and structural factors increase inconsistent condom use by sex workers' one-time and regular clients in Northern Uganda.

While sex workers (SWs) bear the brunt of the epidemic in Uganda, there remains a dearth of empirical research on the structural drivers of HIV prevention among SWs. This study examined the drivers of inconsistent condom use by one-time and regular clients of young women SWs in Gulu, Northern Uganda. Data were drawn from the Gulu Sexual Health Study, a cross-sectional study of young SWs, aged 14 years and older (2011-2012). SWs were recruited using peer/SW-led outreach, in partnership with The AIDS Support Organization and other CBOs. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the c

Partner Pressure, Victimization History, and Alcohol: Women's Condom-Decision Abdication Mediated by Mood and Anticipated Negative Partner Reaction.

Highly intoxicated versus sober women were evaluated using multi-group path analyses to test the hypothesis that sexual victimization history would interact with partner pressure to forgo condom use, resulting in greater condom-decision abdication-letting the man decide whether or not to use a condom. After beverage administration, community women (n = 408) projected themselves into a scenario depicting a male partner exerting high or low pressure for unprotected sex. Mood, anticipated negative reactions from the partner, and condom-decision abdication were assessed. In both control and alcoho

Condom Use in the Context of Main and Casual Partner Concurrency: Individual and Relationship Predictors in a Sample of Heterosexual African American Men.

Researchers have identified engagement in sexual concurrency, particularly when condom use is inconsistent, as a risk factor for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. This risk is particularly salient in rural communities in which dense interconnection of sexual networks can promote the spread of sexually transmitted infections. The authors investigated individual and relationship factors that predict inconsistent condom use in the context of main and casual partner sexual concurrency among 176 rural African American men. The individual psychosocial factors investigated included impul

The influence of drug consumption on condom use and other aspects related to HIV infection among male sex workers in Spain.

Higher rates of substance use have been associated with unsafe sex behavior. Male sex workers (MSW) present high rates of drug use during or after the professional sexual exchange with clients and also in their leisure. This research describes patterns of drug consumption among MSW in Spain and explores both the effect of substance use on professional and risk sexual behaviors. Participants were 100 agency MSW offering their services in Valencia and Castellón (Spain). Most of them were drug users and the most common substances were "soft drugs" and cocaine. An absence of injection drugs was fo
