Ocular manifestations of cat-scratch disease.

Bartonella henselae has only recently been isolated, characterized, and found to be the principal cause of cat-scratch disease (CSD). The availability of specific serologic investigations has allowed the recognition of a spectrum of ocular CSD syndromes that previously were ill defined and considered idiopathic. The primary inoculation complex causing regional lymphadenopathy is represented in the eye by Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome; B. henselae is the most common cause. Leber's neuroretinitis has been identified for 80 years, and new data suggest that it is commonly a manifestation of C

The development of a multiplex real-time PCR for the detection of herpes simplex virus 1 and 2, varizella zoster virus, adenovirus and Chlamydia trachomatis from eye swabs.

Infectious conjunctivitis can be difficult to distinguish clinically due to the considerable overlap in clinical presentation so clinical diagnosis of conjunctivitis is often insufficient. It is therefore necessary to have a rapid diagnostic test that differentiates between the different causes of infectious conjunctivitis. Screening clinical samples by sample type/syndrome based multiplex real time PCR would allow for rapid detection of a variety of pathogens simultaneously, which will in turn aid in the treatment and clinical management of the patient. A multiplex real-time PCR assay for rap

Differential associations of fine and coarse particulate air pollution with cause-specific pneumonia mortality: A nationwide, individual-level, case-crossover study.

BACKGROUND: The connections between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and coarse particulate matter (PM2.5-10) and daily mortality of viral pneumonia and bacterial pneumonia were unclear. OBJECTIVES: To distinguish the connections between PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 and daily mortality due to viral pneumonia and bacterial pneumonia. METHODS: Using a comprehensive national death registry encompassing all areas of mainland China, we conducted a case-crossover investigation from 2013 to 2019 at an individual level. Residential daily particle concentrations were evaluated using satellite-based models with

Quantitative Evaluation of Microcirculatory Alterations in Patients with COVID-19 and Bacterial Septic Shock through Remote Photoplethysmography and Automated Capillary Refill Time Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Sepsis, a leading global health challenge, accounts for around 20% of deaths worldwide. The complexity of sepsis, especially the difference between bacterial and viral etiologies, requires an effective assessment of microcirculation during resuscitation. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of infusion therapy on microcirculation in patients with sepsis, focusing on bacterial- and COVID-19-associated sepsis using remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) and the automated capillary refill time (aCRT). Materials and Methods: This single-center prospective study was conduc

A Novel Therapeutic Approach: Phage and Alhagi maurorum Synergy Against Kidney and Bladder Infection Caused by Proteus mirabilis in BALB/c Mice.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) caused by Proteus mirabilis biofilms present significant challenges due to escalating multidrug resistance, highlighting the urgent need for alternative therapeutic strategies. This study evaluates a novel combinatorial approach employing a cocktail of two lytic bacteriophages (Isf-Pm1 and Isf-Pm2) in conjunction with Alhagi maurorum ethanolic extract (AME) to reduce bacterial burden in an established murine model of catheter-associated infection. We hypothesized that the synergistic activity of phages and AME would enhance treatment effica

Effects of the chlorination and pressure flushing of drippers fed by reclaimed wastewater on biofouling.

Milli-channel baffle labyrinths are widely used in drip irrigation systems. They induce a pressure drop enabling drip irrigation. However, with a section thickness that is measured in mm2, they are sensitive to clogging, which reduces the performance and service life of a drip irrigation system. The impact of chlorination (1.5 ppm of free chlorine during 1 h application) and pressure flushing (0.18 MPa) on the biofouling of non-pressure-compensating drippers, fed by real reclaimed wastewater, was studied at lab scale using optical coherence tomography. The effect of these treatments on microbi

Development of a sonodynamic approach for Listeria monocytogenes inactivation and quality preservation in strawberries.

This study developed an ultrasonically activated sonosensitizer composite, curcumin-lecithin-propyl gallate-zein (CLPGZ) nanoparticles, evaluated its bactericidal mechanism of Listeria monocytogenes and its potential in food preservation applications. The synthesized CLPGZ nanoparticles were characterized for their physicochemical properties, including particle-size distribution, storage stability, and antioxidant activity. In conjunction with low-frequency ultrasound treatment, CLPGZ effectively induced the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via sonodynamic effects, leading to bacter

Patterns of Antibiotic Prescription in Endodontic Therapy in the Republic of Croatia.

In response to the global trend of decreasing antibiotic usage, this study aimed to evaluate the nature and frequency of antibiotic prescriptions in conjunction with endodontic therapy in Croatia and to assess the attitudes of Croatian dental practitioners towards the endodontic treatment of patients susceptible to bacterial endocarditis. A survey questionnaire was sent to all dental practitioners in Croatia, achieving a response rate of 27%. The most frequently prescribed antibiotic was penicillin with clavulanic acid (63.4%), while standalone penicillin was less prevalent (18.6%). For patien

Microbiota and the Response to Vaccines Against Respiratory Virus.

This mini review describes the role of gut and lung microbiota during respiratory viral infection and discusses the implication of the microbiota composition on the immune responses generated by the vaccines designed to protect against these pathogens. This is a growing field and recent evidence supports that the composition and function of the microbiota can modulate the immune response of vaccination against respiratory viruses such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2. Recent studies have highlighted that molecules derived from the microbiome can have systemic effects, acting in distant organs. Thes

Review of Rifaximin: Latest Treatment Frontier for Irritable Bowel Syndrome Mechanism of Action and Clinical Profile.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome is classified as a functional gastrointestinal disorder with the primary symptom of abdominal pain in conjunction with bloating and bowel movement disorder. It affects up to 15% of the world's population. Among its subtypes, the most common is diarrhoea predominant. However, the current treatment options for diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome have had not very promising results; most, such as antispasmodics, only provide partial symptomatic relief. Treatment with antidepressants and alosetron (a 5HT3 antagonist) has shown the most promise to dat

Comprehensive Profile of Pathogens and Antimicrobial Resistance in Conjunctivitis Cases from Niger.

Infectious conjunctivitis outbreaks remain a public health burden. This study focuses on the pathogen and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles identified in Niger. Sixty-two patients with acute infectious conjunctivitis who presented to health posts were enrolled from December 2021 to May 2022. Nasal and conjunctival swabs were obtained from each patient. Unbiased RNA deep sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to identify associated pathogens. A pathogen was identified in 39 patients (63%; 95% CI, 50-74). Of those, an RNA virus was detected in 23 patients (59%; 95% CI, 43-73). RNA viruses were dive

Within-host dynamics of mycoplasma infections: conjunctivitis in wild passerine birds.

The host-pathogen interaction drives infectious disease dynamics at the individual, population and community levels. Here I present and analyze a model of the vertebrate immune response to mycoplasma infections, and use it to identify which pathogen and host immune characteristics drive patterns of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) infections in the house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) and other passerine birds. I also address which host and pathogen characteristics most affect host infectiousness and survival. These results imply that much of the observed variation in the house finch likely arises

Mycobacterium genavense Infection in a Domestic Ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

Mycobacterium genavense infection was diagnosed in an adult ferret with ptosis of the left eye, a proliferative lesion of the conjunctiva of the nictitating membrane, conjunctival swelling, and tumefaction of the periorbital tissues with a watery ocular discharge and the presence of a retrobulbar mass. The diagnosis was based on characteristic cytology of the retrobulbar mass and left mandibular lymph node that revealed granulomatous inflammation. Ziehl-Neelsen staining showed the presence of positive acid-fast bacilli in the cytoplasm of the macrophages. The diagnosis was confirmed by sequenc
