Our objective was to examine the management of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in Southend Hospital against the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV guidelines. In addition, we reviewed the Genito-Urinary (GU) Medicine and Gynaecology notes for patients who failed treatment for PID in GU medicine. This was to reveal their complications and subsequent management. Thirty of 249 patients diagnosed with PID failed treatment. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hydatidosis is a major public health problem that can cause significant morbidity and mortality; however, it is possible to control and even eradicate the disease. This study was carried out to investigate pediatric hydatidosis in Iran.
METHODS: Data were collected from the records of 31 patients admitted to the Children Medical Center Hospital in Tehran, Iran, with hydatidosis from 1995 to 2005. Data collected included demographic data, and information on clinical manifestations, type and site of cysts, laboratory results, and therapeutic procedures employed.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the impact of syphilis control activities in King County, Washington.
STUDY DESIGN: We calculated rates of early syphilis and trends in numbers of persons tested and diagnosed through screening and partner notification from 1998 to 2005.
RESULTS: Early syphilis cases increased from 38 in 1998 to 188 in 2005 with 92% occurring among men who have sex with men (MSM). 52 cases of human trichinellosis were notified from 11 towns in North Rhine-Westphalia from November 1998 to March 1999. A 21 year old woman presented with painful groin lymphadenopathy and malaise. Lymph node biopsy, to exclude atypical infection and malignancy, suggested the diagnosis of lymphogranuloma venereum. This diagnosis was confirmed by serology and polymerase chain reaction, with the patient subsequently admitting to a casual sexual contact within the United Kingdom.
