Mirror without reflections: social and environmental conflicts and vulnerabilities in a sugarcane producing region.

This study aims to analyze the socio-environmental and health effects of sugarcane crops in a county in the Zona da Mata of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. A collective mapping was carried out with use of social cartography. The issues investigated were plotted on maps, whose final versions were elaborated by means of the ArcGIS 10.2 software. The study was carried out in the district of Tejucupapo, located in the municipality of Goiana, selected due to its proximity to the sugarcane fields. In the environment there was an increase in deforestation, mangrove degradation, silting of rivers, re

Mercury methylation in rice paddy and accumulation in rice plant: A review.

The bioavailability and toxicity of mercury (Hg) are dependent on its chemical speciation, in which methylmercury (MeHg) is the most toxic compound. Inorganic Hg can be transformed into MeHg in anaerobic conditions. Subsequent accumulation and biomagnification in the food chain pose a potential threat to human health. Previous studies have confirmed that paddy soil is an important site for MeHg production, and rice fields are an important source of MeHg in terrestrial ecosystems. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is recently confirmed as a potential bioaccumulator plant of MeHg. Understanding the behavio

Isolation, characterization, and in silico analysis of a bioactive compound citrinin from Aspergillus terreus (OP480427) with antagonistic activity against the toxigenic fungus Aspergillus flavus (OP600575).

The study investigates the antifungal potential of citrinin, the bioactive compound isolated from Aspergillus terreus (OP480427), against aflatoxin-producing fungi isolated from wheat rhizospheric soil and its ability to interfere with aflatoxin biosynthesis. Citrinin, purified using TLC, identified through polyphasic characterisation, effectively inhibited the growth of Aspergillus flavus (OP600575) and reduced aflatoxin production, a major food safety concern. Structural characterisation was performed using FTIR, HRMS and NMR. The reduction of aflatoxin levels was confirmed by HPLC analysis.

Reprogramming yeast metabolism for customized starch-rich micro-grain through low-carbon microbial manufacturing.

Starch is a primary food ingredient and industrial feedstock. Low-carbon microbial manufacturing offers a carbon-neutral/negative arable land-independent strategy for starch production. Here, we reconfigure the oleaginous yeast as a starch-rich micro-grain producer by rewiring the starch biosynthesis and gluconeogenesis pathways and regulating cell morphology. With the CO2 electro-synthesized acetate as the substrate, the strain accumulates starch 47.18% of dry cell weight. The optimized system renders spatial-temporal starch productivity (243.7 g/m2/d) approximately 50-fold higher than crop c

Pseudomonas fluorescens from Lake Bogoria, Kenya: a promising biocontrol agent against Fusarium solani in Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L) are an important staple crop valued for their high protein content and dietary benefits. However, Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium solani, is responsible for up to an 84% yield loss in bean production. This study aimed to isolate and evaluate novel Pseudomonas fluorescens from Lake Bogoria as potential biocontrol agents against F. solani. Using serial dilution, 30 bacterial isolates were obtained; 10 showed varied mycelial inhibition rates (5.95-42.86%) through dual culture and confrontation assays. Molecular identification using 16S rDNA confirmed that two

Cysteine-rich receptor-like kinases OsCRK19 and OsCRK22 interact with OsRbohI to modulate ROS production and disease resistance in rice.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst is a hallmark response of plant innate immunity. ROS production must be under tight control since inappropriate accumulation is toxic. In rice, OsRbohI is the key NADPH oxidase responsible for ROS generation. However, the upstream kinases regulating OsRbohI activity remain unknown. Here, we identified two cysteine-rich receptor-like kinases, OsCRK19 and OsCRK22, as regulators of OsRbohI. OsCRK19 and OsCRK22 bind to N- both termini of OsRbohI. OsCRK19/22-OsRbohI interactions are constitutive and not responding to PAMP elicitation. OsCRK19 and OsCRK22 phosphor

Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations increase gaps of rice yields between low- and middle-to-high-income countries.

The rising carbon dioxide concentrations are expected to increase future rice yields. However, variations in the CO2 fertilization effect (CFE) between rice subspecies and the influence of concurrent global warming introduce uncertainty in future global rice yield projections. Here we conducted a meta-analysis of rising carbon dioxide field experiments and employed crop modelling to assess future global rice yields for the top 14 rice producing countries. We found a robust parabolic relationship between rice CFE and temperature, with significant variations between rice subspecies. Our projecti

Co-treatment with silicon and quicklime in pig manure application as a promising option of environmnetal management.

Manure utilization is the most important current practices economically and, ecologically. The combined use of active forms of silicon together with other types of soil amendments or fertilizers has been shown to reduce P, N and K leaching from upper soil horizon or fixation, which positively affect crop production. The present study evaluated the performance of pig manure co-treated with quicklime (calcium oxide - CaO) and monosilicic acid (Si(OH)4) as sources of nutrients for rice production conducted in greenhouse and field tests for the reduction of negative environmental effects through t…

Assessing the Ratios of Formaldehyde and Glyoxal to NO2 as Indicators of O3-NOx-VOC Sensitivity.

Ozone (O3) pollution has a negative effect on the public health and crop yields. Accurate diagnosis of O3 production sensitivity and targeted reduction of O3 precursors [i.e., nitrogen oxides (NOx) or volatile organic compounds (VOCs)] are effective for mitigating O3 pollution. This study assesses the indicative roles of the surface formaldehyde-to-NO2 ratio (FNR) and glyoxal-to-NO2 ratio (GNR) on surface O3-NOx-VOC sensitivity based on a meta-analysis consisting of multiple field observations and model simulations. Thresholds of the FNR and GNR are determined using the relationship between th

For peace and pain: the medical legitimisation of Afghanistan's poppy crop.

Since the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, there has been an overall increase in illicit opium production in Afghanistan and mounting human losses. The United Nations has attributed 1 million human deaths to Afghan opiates over the past decade. As the war in Afghanistan nears a crucial mark, the NATO coalition forces and Afghan people can no longer afford the same ineffective counternarcotics strategy. This commentary proposes a strategic revision that reframes Afghanistan's poppy problem as an opportunity for global public health. Specifically, The Afghan poppy crop could be repurposed away

Agronomic and financial benefits of direct Minjingu phosphate rock use in acidic humic nitisols of Upper Eastern Kenya.

A major constraint to crop production in Sub-Saharan Africa is nutrient deficiency, especially phosphorus (P) deficiency. Phosphorus plays a crucial role in photosynthesis but is usually deficient in acidic soils since it is converted to less available forms, affecting crop yields. There is a need to improve phosphorus availability to crops for maximum production. This study assessed Minjingu phosphate rock fertilizer's impact on maize yields, soil chemical composition, and cost-effectiveness in acidic humic nitisols of Tharaka Nithi County, Upper Eastern Kenya. A field experiment in a randomi…

A critical review on speciation, mobilization and toxicity of lead in soil-microbe-plant system and bioremediation strategies.

Lead accumulation in soils is of serious concern in agricultural production due to the harmful effects on soil microflora, crop growth and food safety. In soil, speciation of lead greatly affects its bioavailability and thus its toxicity on plants and microbes. Many plants and bacteria have evolved to develop detoxification mechanisms to counter the toxic effect of lead. Factors influencing the lead speciation include soil pH, organic matter, presence of various amendments, clay minerals and presence of organic colloids and iron oxides. Unlike, other metals little is known about the speciation

Effect of air pollution on peri-urban agriculture: a case study.

Peri-urban agriculture is vital for the urban populations of many developing countries. Increases in both industrialization and urbanization, and associated air pollution threaten urban food production and its quality. Six hour mean concentrations were monitored for SO(2), NO(2) and O(3) and plant responses were measured in terms of physiological characteristics, pigment, biomass and yield. Parameter reductions in mung bean (Vigna radiata), palak (Beta vulgaris), wheat (Triticum aestivum) and mustard (Brassica compestris) grown within the urban fringes of Varanasi, India correlated directly wi

Transcriptomic insights into perennial sorghum resistance to sugarcane aphids.

BACKGROUND: Perennial crops, compared to annual cereals, offer multiple advantages that enhance crop resilience and promote sustainable agricultural practices such as low economic input, better soil health, increased carbon sequestration, etc. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), one of the top five cereals grown in the world, is currently under threat from sugarcane aphid (SCA; Melanaphis sacchari). In this study, we explored the molecular and genetic mechanisms that mediate the interaction between SCA and perennial sorghum (Sorghum bicolor x Sorghum halepense). RESULTS: We employed the use of RNA-seq

A harmonized dataset relating alternative farmer management practices to crop yield, soil organic carbon stock, nitrous oxide emissions, and nitrate leaching generated using IPCC methodologies and meta-analyses.

Farming practices such as soil tillage, organic/mineral fertilization, irrigation, crop selection and residues management influence multiple ecosystem services provided by agricultural systems. These practices exhibit complex, non-linear interrelationships that affect crop productivity, water quality, and non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, possibly offsetting their benefits regarding soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration. Current methodologies from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for assessing the impacts of alternative farming practices on GHG emission

Tobacco Transcription Factor NtWRKY70b Facilitates Leaf Senescence via Inducing ROS Accumulation and Impairing Hydrogen Sulfide Biosynthesis.

Leaf senescence is the terminal stage of leaf development, and its initiation and progression are closely controlled by the integration of a myriad of endogenous signals and environmental stimuli. It has been documented that WRKY transcription factors (TFs) play essential roles in regulating leaf senescence, yet the molecular mechanism of WRKY-mediated leaf senescence still lacks detailed elucidation in crop plants. In this study, we cloned and identified a tobacco WRKY TF gene, designated NtWRKY70b, acting as a positive regulator of natural leaf senescence. The expression profile analysis sho
