Much fundamental research has already been performed to understand the mechanism of microbial rubber degradation. Due to the increasing amount of rubber waste, biotechnical methods to degrade that particular waste are strongly needed. The present study evaluates whether a microbial or an enzymatic process is more suitable for efficient biodegradation, due to less sensitivity towards rubber additives. Therefore we investigated the impact of 15 different frequently used rubber additives on cells of the potent rubber degrader Gordonia polyisoprenivorans VH2 and the enzyme Lcp1VH2. For this, cells

The standard corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL), that includes the removal of corneal epithelium to permit adequate penetration of riboflavin in the stroma, is an established procedure to halting keratoconus progression. However, as epithelial removal may cause postoperative pain and an increased risk of corneal infection, new therapeutic approaches have been proposed. Iontophoresis is a recently developed non-invasive technique which provides the use of electrical current during CXL to enhance transepithelial penetration of riboflavin into the corneal stroma. Here, we describe for the first

Corneal cross-linking was approved by United States Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of progressive keratoconus in April 2016. As this approach becomes more widely used for the treatment of keratoconus and post-laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) ectasia, the medical community is becoming more familiar with potential complications associated with this procedure. This article aims to review the reported complications of collagen cross-linking for the treatment of keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia.

Changes in the biomechanical properties of the human cornea play an important role in the pathogenesis of corneal ectatic diseases. Many different pathological conditions in the cornea may reduce its biomechanical resistance. Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) has emerged as a promising technique to slow or even to stop the progression of ectasia. In this procedure, riboflavin (vitamin B2) is administered in conjunction with ultraviolet A light (UVA, 365 nm). This interaction causes the formation of reactive oxygen species, leading to additional covalent bonds between collagen molecules, wit

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review article is to present an overview of some of the seminal work published in the last 18 months (July 2014 to December 2015).
RECENT FINDINGS: The published literature highlights the need for the identification of fungal isolates to species and subspecies level using molecular methods. Molecular methods helped us identify some of the unknown fungi such as Pythium - fungi that causes keratitis unresponsive to conventional antifungal therapy. Although not popular fungal in-vitro susceptibility tests are showing better correlation between resistance and cl

An in situ heparin-based forming hydrogel that cures under visible-light is formulated using eosin Y as a photoinitiator with triethanolamine as an electron donor to initiate reaction of thiolated-heparin with acrylate-ended poly(ethylene glycol). Formulations and irradiation conditions are presented for control of heparin content (1.6 to 3.3% w/v), modulus (100-10,000 Pa), and gelation time (30-600 s). Encapsulation of 3T3 fibroblasts in the hydrogel gave over 96% viability for all conditions examined. In vitro characterization of epidermal growth factor released from the hydrogel confirmed t

Cholecyst-derived extracellular matrix (CEM) is a fibro-porous decellularized serosal layer of porcine gall-bladder. CEM loses 90% of its weight at 48 h of in vitro collagenase digestion, but takes two months to be completely resorbed in vivo. Carbodiimide (EDC) crosslinking helps tailoring CEM's in vitro collagenase susceptibility. Here, the efficacy of EDC crosslinking on tailoring in vivo biodegradability of CEM is reported. CEM crosslinked with 0.0005 and 0.0033 × 10(3) M of EDC/mg that lose 80% and 0% of their weight respectively to in vitro collagenase digestion, were present even after

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Topography-guided laser refractive surgery regularizes the front corneal surface irregularities to achieve the desired refractive outcome. This is particularly applicable in highly aberrated corneas, where wavefront aberrometry is often not possible. This article aims to review the recently published results of topography-guided ablations in normal regular corneas, highly aberrated corneas, and its application in conjunction with collagen cross-linking (CXL) in cases of keratectasia.
RECENT FINDINGS: Topography-guided laser ablation is increasingly used with good efficacy a

The concept of protein cross-linking in combination with mass spectrometry holds great promise to derive structural information on protein conformation and protein-protein interactions. We recently presented a dissociative amine-reactive cross-linker (NHS-BuUrBu-NHS) that is shown herein to be universally applicable to protein structure analysis under matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization tandem mass spectrometric (MALDI-MS/MS) conditions, based on the examples of the peptides substance P, luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH), and the 32-kDa ligand-binding domain of peroxisome pr

BACKGROUND: Highly crosslinked and thermally treated polyethylenes were clinically introduced to reduce wear and osteolysis. Although the crosslinking process improves the wear performance, it also introduces free radicals into the polymer that can subsequently oxidize. Thermal treatments have been implemented to reduce oxidation; however, the efficacy of these methods with regard to reducing in vivo oxidative degradation remains to be seen. Polyethylene oxidation is a concern because it can compromise the ultimate strength and ductility of the material.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated facial lipoatrophy (FLA) represents a common and highly stigmatizing side effect of retroviral therapy. By causing loss of subcutaneous adipose tissue mainly in the cheek, temple and periocular area, FLA can significantly affect the patient's quality of life, both physically and psychologically. A limited quantity of data has been published on various filling substances for the management of FLA. Here, the authors present two patients with HIV-associated FLA successfully treated with a novel HA filler over a period of 24 months.
