Use of the French National Health Data System (SNDS) in pharmacoepidemiology: A systematic review in its maturation phase.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The French National Health Data System (SNDS) comprises healthcare data that cover 99% of the population (over 67 million individuals) in France. The aim of this study was to present an overview of published pharmacoepidemiological studies using the SNDS in its maturation phase. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review of original research articles in the Pubmed and EMBASE databases from January 2012 until August 2018. RESULTS: A total of 316 full-text articles were included, with an annual increase over the study period. Only 16 records were excluded after scre

CRISPR for cystic fibrosis: Advances and insights from a systematic review.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a severe genetic disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations in the CFTR gene. Gene-editing approaches have the potential to correct such mutations. This systematic review outlines the mechanisms of the main CRISPR-based technologies, and, through cross-study comparisons, analyzes 27 research articles that applied them to target CF-causing variants. We report and discuss the strategy design, target cell selection, editing efficiency, prevalence of editing byproducts, and levels of CFTR functional restoration achieved in each work, with the aim of providing technical i

Physical Activity Level and Perspectives of Participants Transitioning from Onsite to Virtual Cardiac Rehabilitation during the Early COVID-19 Pandemic: A Mixed-Method Study.

This mixed-method study aimed to compare physical activity (PA) patterns of a cross-over cardiac rehabilitation (CR) cohort with a center-based CR cohort and to explore barriers and facilitators of participants transitioning and engaging in virtual CR. It included the retrospective self-reported PA of a cross-over CR cohort (n = 75) and a matched center-based CR cohort (n = 75). Some of the participants included in the cross-over cohort (n = 12) attended semi-structured focus group sessions and results were interpreted in the context of the PRECEDE-PROCEED model. Differences between groups wer

Cross-shift airway responses and long-term decline in FEV1 in cotton textile workers.

RATIONALE: Acute airway response, measured as cross-shift change in FEV(1), to cotton dust may lead to subsequent chronic loss of lung function in exposed workers. OBJECTIVES: To explore the association between the magnitude and frequency of cross-shift change and chronic loss of FEV(1). METHODS: Four hundred eight cotton workers and 417 silk workers from Shanghai textile mills were observed prospectively for 20 years, with cross-shift measurements at baseline and follow-up surveys at approximate 5-year intervals. To account for repeated measures of 5-year change, generalized estimating equa

Triazolam as a hypnotic for geriatric patients. A double-blind cross-over comparison of nitrazepam and triazolam regarding effects on sleep and psychomotor performance.

Triazolam 0.25 mg was compared with nitrazepam 5 mg as a hypnotic for 26 geriatric inpatients in a double-blind cross-over study. Sleep quantity and quality and psychomotor performance were studied. The sleep quantity and quality were similar for both drugs. There were no statistically significant differences between the two drugs in the psychomotor tests. The results are in contrast to results from other studies and might be explained by the composition of the patient material in the present study.

The association between sedentary behaviour and sarcopenia in older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behaviour is considered to contribute to sarcopenia when combined with physical inactivity. Whether sedentary behaviour is independently associated with sarcopenia remains controversial. The aim of this study is to explore the association between sedentary behaviour and sarcopenia in older adults in community and long-term care facility settings. METHODS: Eight electronic databases including MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Wanfang were searched from inception until August 2023. The review included cross-sectional and longitudinal studies concerning the association between sedentary b

Development of a Second-Generation RARα Selective Antagonist as an Orally Bioavailable, Effective, Safe, and Reversible Male Contraceptive.

We report the design and SAR studies of benzopyran-, benzofuran-, and benzothiophene-derived inhibitors of the retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARα) for male contraception. SAR studies identified critical features influencing activity, such as the optimal positioning of antagonism moieties and substituents, leading to the discovery of (S)-4-(5-(2,8-dimethyl-5-(p-tolyl)-2H-chromen-3-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)benzoic acid (compound 23). Compound 23 is a highly potent RARα inhibitor (IC50 = 0.051 nM) with excellent selectivity (>1650-fold over RARβ and >1960-fold over RARγ) and ADMET properties. Compound

Bone density in competitive cyclists.

To investigate current theories of the contributing factors to osteopenia/osteoporosis in competitive cyclists, we present a narrative review of published cross-sectional studies investigating plausible etiologies of decreased bone density in competitive cyclists. Aggregate from multiple published studies as cited. Bone mineral density in cyclists appears to be correlated positively to the cumulative amount of bone loading forces experienced over a lifetime. However, decreases in bone mineral density are noted over the short term if bone loading forces are removed, despite previous gains. Ther

Quality of life in chronic dialysis patients. Factors unrelated to dialysis modality.

The quality of life (medical, psychological, and social adaptation) of 66 chronic dialysis patients was studied cross-sectionally. The participants had similar levels of medical, psychological, and social adaptation to those found in previous studies of chronic dialysis patients. Medical, psychological, and social adaptation are independent dimensions that are only weakly intercorrelated. When categorized by specific individual or treatment characteristics, men and those over age 51 had poorer medical and psychological adaptation than did women and younger dialysis patients. Duration of dialys

Mechanisms of Flavivirus Cross-Protection against Yellow Fever in a Mouse Model.

The complete lack of yellow fever virus (YFV) in Asia, and the lack of urban YFV transmission in South America, despite the abundance of the peridomestic mosquito vector Aedes (Stegomyia.) aegypti is an enigma. An immunologically naïve population of over 2 billion resides in Asia, with most regions infested with the urban YF vector. One hypothesis for the lack of Asian YF, and absence of urban YF in the Americas for over 80 years, is that prior immunity to related flaviviruses like dengue (DENV) or Zika virus (ZIKV) modulates YFV infection and transmission dynamics. Here we utilized an interfe

Cross-day analysis of Multicode Surface Electromyography based Biometrics for Personal Identification.

Recently, surface electromyography (sEMG) has emerged as a novel biometric trait for personal identification, potentially providing a superior spoof-resistant solution over existing traits. The sEMG possesses a unique dual-mode security: they differ between individuals (biometric-mode), and different gestures have different sEMG characteristics (knowledge-mode). To leverage the knowledge-mode facet of the dual-mode security, the previous studies have utilized a multicode framework involving the fusion of codes (gestures), however, the analysis involved data recorded on a single day and from a

Public perception of drinking water safety in South Africa 2002-2009: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In low and middle income countries, public perceptions of drinking water safety are relevant to promotion of household water treatment and to household choices over drinking water sources. However, most studies of this topic have been cross-sectional and not considered temporal variation in drinking water safety perceptions. The objective of this study is to explore trends in perceived drinking water safety in South Africa and its association with disease outbreaks, water supply and household characteristics. METHODS: This repeated cross-sectional study draws on General Household

Uncovering the dynamics and causality of PTSD symptoms in firefighters: Insights from cross-lagged panel network analyses.

Firefighters have a greater prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because of their greater risk of exposure to traumatic events. Network analysis offers novel perspectives for understanding PTSD. However, most previous network analysis studies were cross-sectional and failed to reveal the dynamics and causality of PTSD symptoms. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the longitudinal development of and causal relationships among PTSD symptoms in firefighters. Two survey waves were conducted among 637 Chinese male firefighters: in April 2021 (baseline) and March 2023 (follow-up).

Cross-Reactive Immunity among Five Medically Important Mosquito-Borne Flaviviruses Related to Human Diseases.

Flaviviruses cause a spectrum of potentially severe diseases. Most flaviviruses are transmitted by mosquitoes or ticks and are widely distributed all over the world. Among them, several mosquito-borne flaviviruses are co-epidemic, and the similarity of their antigenicity creates abundant cross-reactive immune responses which complicate their prevention and control. At present, only effective vaccines against yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis have been used clinically, while the optimal vaccines against other flavivirus diseases are still under development. The antibody-dependent enhanceme
