The story of Morell Mackenzie and his involvement in the case of Crown Prince Frederick III (the future Emperor of Germany) is as well known as it is controversial. The consequences of the case were profound, both medically and politically. Most documents concerning the case are affected by varying degrees of bias, and as a result our understanding of the true events is incomplete. We present a brief summary of the case, and review an unpublished manuscript which adds to our understanding of the events. A case is described of resorption of the mesial aspect of a maxillary permanent first molar in a 13-year-old boy whose maxillary second premolar was impacted. The premolar was partially erupted in the line of the arch and radiography revealed a radiolucent area involving enamel, dentine and cementum on the mesial aspect of the first molar. The first molar was extracted and the premolar erupted normally. The case emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis of developmental abnormalities.

The exaggerated mesial eruption of the permanent first molar can result in the tooth becoming impacted, or the premature atypical resorption and exfoliation of the primary molar, with a resultant loss of space. A stainless steel crown with a distal guide plane was placed on a primary molar to correct the aberrant eruption angle of the permanent tooth. This procedure can be used successfully for both partially and totally tissue-impacted teeth, and is described in this report.
