Infants often develop reactive airway disease after respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis. Cysteinyl-leukotrienes (cys-LT) are released during RSV infection and may contribute to the inflammation. We hypothesized that a cys-LT receptor antagonist would ameliorate reactive airway disease subsequent to RSV bronchiolitis. Since alopecia areata might be due to an aberrant T-cell-mediated immunity, the purpose of our study was to compare the results obtained with Thymopentin to those of topical sensitizing therapies, such as squaric acid dibutylester or diphencyprone. Statistical analysis showed no differences between the results obtained with these two therapies. Therefore, Thymopentin can be considered to be a new therapeutic agent which, like the classic topical drugs squaric acid dibutylester or diphencyprone, has immunoreactive properties and might provide some hope to patients with severe alopecia areata.

Fundamental and clinical studies on a new carbapenem antibiotic, imipenem/cilastatin sodium (MK-0787/MK-0791), were carried out in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. The following results were obtained. The concentration of MK-0787 in uterine tissue was 3.5 approximately 8.2 micrograms/g at about 30 minutes after an administration of 0.5 g/0.5 g of MK-0787/MK-0791 by a 30-minute intravenous drip infusion. 26 patients with alopecia areata were treated topically with diphencyprone. 10 had alopecia universalis, 7 alopecia totalis and 9 had alopecia areata. The treatment lasted from 4 to 14 months. In 13 patients a little response was obtained; only in 1 case it was satisfactory. Factors that appear to influence these results are discussed.

This study investigated the effects of single and combined treatments of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and preservation pads (SO2-pad) on physiological activities and quality changes in grapes during storage.
