Computed tomography in pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The use of computed tomography (C.T.) in the diagnosis and management of developmental and pathological conditions of the jaws in children was evaluated. CT was found to be superior to plain film radiography in estimation of the three-dimensional morphology of the abnormality in the jaws, in determining spatial relationship and proximity to vital structures. It is valuable by allowing accurate planning of the surgical procedure, estimation of the extent of the surgery and prediction of outcome as well as complications and prognosis. CT in the appropriate circumstances, is a very useful diagnos

Retrospective review of pediatric oral lesions from a dental school biopsy service.

UNLABELLED: This report presents a review of the results from 5457 biopsies of patients, 0-16 years of age, received over 15 years at the Un … of biopsies (2758, 51%) followed by Developmental conditions (1928, 35%) and Neoplasms (734, 13%). Dentigerous cysts were the most common lesions, followed by the mucous retention phenomenon (mucocele). The 15 most frequently occurring lesions accounted for 80% of all biopsies. Eight malignancies and 22 benign aggressive tumors were also included. CONCLUSIONS: 1 …

Early soft tissue pathosis associated with impacted third molars without pericoronal radiolucency.

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to histologically evaluate soft tissue pathosis in pericoronal tissues of impacted third molars that di … s submitted, 34% showed squamous metaplasia suggestive of cystic change equivalent to that found in dentigerous cysts. Soft tissue pathosis was significantly higher in patients over 21 years of age (P =.001). Five of 8 diseased specimens demonstrated PCNA uptake, whereas none of 10 healthy specimens were PCNA positive. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that rad …

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor: A histopathologic profile of 43 cases with evidence supporting a mixed odontogenic origin.

BACKGROUND: Adenomatoid Odontogenic Tumor (AOT) accounts for 3% of all odontogenic tumors. It has been classified by WHO as an odontogenic t … strands of tumor cells. Few cases showed melanin pigmentation. Over a third of cases (37.2%) showed dentigerous cyst like areas and one case each showed features of ossifying fibroma and focal cemento-osseous dysplasia. Tumor droplets, hyaline rings within duct-like structures, dentinoid material and osteodentin showed reddish yellow birefringence when observed un …

Hereditary osteodystrophy with multiple hormone resistance--a case report.

Hereditary Osteodystrophy, also called pseudohypoparathyroidism, Type 1A (PHP), is a very rare condition composed of a heterogeneous group of autosomal dominant disorders with the common feature of organ resistance to multiple hormones. These patients produce the right amount of hormones but there is resistance to its effect. PHP is difficult to diagnose and the lack of diagnosis may have serious implications for the patient. We report a case of PHP, diagnosed by the dentist, due to the dental and jaw manifestations.

[Ameloblastoma of the maxillary sinus. Apropos of a case].

The ameloblastoma is benign odontogen tumour developed from epithelial remains of MALASSEZ. Because of the inclination to invade in an inexorable way all the surrounding tissues and of the faculty of recurrence after removal, one attributes him the qualifier of good-hearted tumour to local wickedness. The mandibulary localization is the most frequent. Toward the maxillary, it is mostly observed in the tuberosity region. The authors report in the work one case of ameloblastoma developed from the pericoronal cyst of an intrasinusal ectopic canine tooth.

Orofacial abnormalities in mucopolysaccharidosis and mucolipidosis type II and III: A systematic review.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs) and mucolipidosis II and III (ML II and III) often manifest with orofacial (progressive) abnormalities, which m … plastic condyles, coronoid hyperplasia, macroglossia, gingival hyperplasia, thick dental follicles, dentigerous cysts, misshapen teeth, enamel defects, and open bite. Orofacial abnormalities are present in all subtypes of MPS, ML II, and III. As orofacial abnormalities may cause complaints, evaluation of orofacial health should be part of routine clinical care.

Off-label use of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) for reconstruction of mandibular bone defects in humans.

PURPOSE: The off-label use of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) for the treatment of mandibular bone defects was evaluated in 5 patients. The rhBMP-2 was used as an alternative to autogenous bone grafting. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 5 patients had mandibular defects reconstructed with rhBMP-2, 1.5 mg/mL, soaked collagen sponges alone or in combination with bone marrow cells and allogenic cancellous bone chips. Four of the patients had mandibular continuity defects and the fifth patient had 2 large bone cavities following removal of dentigerous cysts. Radiographs a…

Unicystic ameloblastoma: Diagnostic challenges and uncommon treatment strategy: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) is frequently associated with an impacted tooth with a challenging diagnosis and decision making. The aim of this article is to emphasize a novel approach of treatment with tooth reimplantation after conservative treatment. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 7-year-old boy consulting with a chief complaint of swelling in the upper left front region. Intraoral examination revealed a non-tender swelling extending from 61 to 63. Radiographic examination showed a well-defined, unilocular radiolucency associated to tooth 21. Initial diagnosis was a dentigerous cyst …

Parameters in panoramic radiography for differentiation of radiolucent lesions.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to establish parameters in panoramic radiography for interpretation of unilocular radiolucent lesions, and to compare the accuracy of diagnoses given by examiners before and after using these parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In Part I, 12 specialists analyzed 24 images and the diagnostic criteria used by each examiner to make correct diagnoses were used to build a list of basic radiographic parameters for each pathology (ameloblastoma, keratocystic odontogenic tumor, dentigerous cyst, and idiopathic bone cavity). In Part II, this list was used by 6 unde…

[The role of interdisciplinary communication in the proper diagnostics of jaw cyst].

Módszer: Korábbi, más célú retrospektív elemzés újraértékelése történt a klinikai (radiológiai) adatközlés, a revízió kapcsán módosuló

Distribution of type 1 and 2 blood group chains in normal and pathological odontogenic epithelium defined by monoclonal antibodies specific for Lea and H type 2.

This study describes the distribution of type 1 and type 2 blood group carbohydrate chains in human normal and pathological odontogenic epithelia and in epithelia of human oral mucosa. Odontogenic epithelium was examined from 12 fetal tooth germs, 25 ameloblastomas, 13 odontogenic keratocysts, 13 follicular cysts and 13 radicular cysts. Oral mucosal epithelia was studied from 12 fetuses and 10 adults. Cell surface carbohydrates were detected using antibodies with reactivity for the blood group antigens A, B, type 1 chain Lea and type 2 chain H by an immunofluorescence technique. The expression
