Acrylates, the 2012 American Contact Dermatitis Society allergen of the year, are found in a range of products including the absorbent materials within feminine hygiene pads. When fully polymerized, acrylates are nonimmunogenic; however, if not completely cured, the monomers can be potent allergens.A 28-year-old woman is presented, who had her teeth varnished with Isodan (Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France) containing HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) with no initial reaction. Approximately 1 month later, the patient developed a genital dermatitis secondary to her feminine hygiene pads.…

Occupational contact dermatitis is generally caused by haptens but can also be induced by proteins causing mainly immunological contact urticaria (ICU); chronic hand eczema in the context of protein contact dermatitis (PCD). In a monocentric retrospective study, from our database, only 31 (0.41%) of patients with contact dermatitis had positive skin tests with proteins: 22 had occupational PCD, 3 had non-occupational PCD, 5 occupational ICU and 1 cook had a neutrophilic fixed food eruption (NFFE) due to fish. From these results and analysis of literature, the characteristics of PCD can be summ…

Fragrances are a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis in Europe and in North America. They can affect individuals at any age and elicit a spectrum of reactions from contact urticaria to systemic contact dermatitis. Growing recognition of the widespread use of fragrances in modern society has fueled attempts to prevent sensitization through improved allergen identification, labeling, and consumer education. This review provides an overview and update on fragrance allergy. Part 1 discusses the epidemiology and evaluation of suspected fragrance allergy. Part 2 reviews screening methods, em…

CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old patient of African ancestry presented with multiple papules in the perioral, perinasal and periocular areas. Histopathology showed sarcoidal granulomas.
DIAGNOSIS: After exclusion of systemic sarcoidosis, the diagnosis of childhood granulomatous periorificial dermatitis was made.
THERAPY: Topical treatment with erythromycin resulted in complete regression.
CONCLUSION: Childhood granulomatous periorificial dermatitis is mainly observed in dark-skinned children of African, Caribbean, or Asian origin. The nosological position of the dermatosis is controversial. Origi…

BACKGROUND: Contact eczema to foods, spices, and food additives can occur in occupational and nonoccupational settings in those who grow, handle, prepare, or cook food. Pizza is one of the most eaten foods in every continent, and pizza making is a common work in many countries.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the occurrence and the causes of contact dermatitis in pizza makers in Naples.
METHODS: We performed an observational study in 45 pizza makers: all the enrolled subjects had to answer a questionnaire designed to detect personal history of respiratory or cutaneous allergy, atopy; work ch…

Atopic dermatitis was described in 1933 but exists since antiquity. We review descriptions of a childhood skin disease compatible with our modern diagnosis of atopic dermatitis, in ancient medicine and in nineteenth century dermatology texts. We identify Hebra's prurigo and Besnier's diathetic prurigo as forerunners of atopic dermatitis, the latter being a synthesis of infantile eczema and prurigo. The pathogenic theories which link atopic dermatitis to humoralistic medicine, to digestive diseases, to allergy may have had consequences on today's reluctance to consider atopic dermatitis as a sk…

Automutilating behavior is becoming ever more frequent in patients seeking dermatologic care. Psychocutaneous disorders encompass a wide range of dermatologic conditions, all of which have in common the important role of psychological factors. Dermatitis artefacta syndrome is characterized by unconscious self-injury behavior, while dermatitis para-artefacta syndrome is labeled with manipulation of an existing specific dermatosis. Consciously stimulated injuries with the purpose of obtaining material gain is known as malingering. Here we present a 20-year-old female patient with a sudden pain a…

We present a 67-year-old man with an ulcerated, indurated plaque on the right mid back with a presumed diagnosis of morphea that was complicated by an allergic contact dermatitis. Further clinical and histopathologic data elucidated the diagnosis of fluoroscopy-induced radiation dermatitis. We present a brief review of the common locations, clinical characteristics, pathophysiology, and management options for fluoroscopy-induced radiation dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: The term "flagellate erythema" after bleomycin therapy was described as bleomycin-induced linear hyperpigmentation. Since then, this pattern has not been related to any other chemotherapeutic regimen.
OBSERVATION: We report a rare patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia who developed "flagellate dermatitis" induced by bendamustine.
CONCLUSION: Chemotherapy induced "Flagellate Dermatitis" is a rare finding reported only after bleomycin therapy. We describe the first case with this characteristic eruption pattern after administration of bendamustine.

Occupational and recreational plant exposure on the skin is fairly common. Plant products and extracts are commonly used and found extensively in the environment. Adverse reactions to plants and their products are also fairly common. However, making the diagnosis of contact dermatitis from plants and plant extracts is not always simple and straightforward. Phytodermatitis refers to inflammation of the skin caused by a plant. The clinical patterns may be allergic phytodermatitis, photophytodermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, pharmacological injury, and mechanical injury. In this article, w…

AIM: To evaluate the real incidence of contact dermatitis, to identify the most common allergens, the favoring factors, to establish the prophylaxis methods, the key for a correct management of the patient with contact dermatitis.
METHOD: A retrospective study, on the patients that refers to the Dermatology Clinic, "St. Spiridon" Emergency Hospital Iasi, between 01.01.2006 and 31.12. 2009, based on demographic items, the type of contact dermatitis and the allergens implicated.

BACKGROUND: Lymphomatoid contact dermatitis is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction predominantly featuring T-cell infiltration. We report a case mainly involving B-cell infiltration associated with eczema and resulting from an indirect proxy contact with an allergen in a conjugal setting.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 32-year-old man had an infiltrated cutaneous lesion on the interior aspect of the left arm with eczematous lesions of the waist and the anterior aspect of the left arm which were present for 6 months. All of these lesions were unresponsive to strong local steroids. Biopsy of the infil…

Wall and Gebauer (Contact Dermatitis 1991: 24: 241-243) first described persistent post-occupational dermatitis (PPOD) as ongoing dermatitis for which there is no obvious present cause, precipitated by prior occupational contact dermatitis (OCD). We propose that individuals exhibiting PPOD lose the capacity for resolution of their condition upon removal from exposure to causative agents and subsequently develop persistent dermatitis, which can be continual or intermittent. Accordingly, we suggest modification of criterion 6 of the OCD criteria developed by Mathias (J Am Acad Dermatol 1989: 20:…
