Disseminated bullous impetigo and atopic dermatitis: Case series and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Bullous impetigo (BI) is a common skin infection of early childhood, resulting from desmoglein-1 cleavage by Staphylococcus aureus exfoliative toxins. Due to compromised barrier function and immune dysregulation, children with atopic dermatitis (AD) are at increased risk of cutaneous infections, yet no literature has been published on disseminated bullous impetigo (DBI) in children with atopic dermatitis (AD). We sought to explore the atopic phenotypes, antibiotic sensitivities, and treatment courses of children diagnosed with disseminated bullous impetigo at our institution. METH

Iron deficiency: structural and microchemical changes in hair, nails, and skin.

Deficiency of nutritional iron represents a public health problem recognized throughout much of the world. The overall prevalence rate of patients with iron deficiency (ID) who need supplementary iron therapy ranges markedly from less than 10% to as high as 70% among various ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Dermatologically, the iron-deficit state can be a secondary condition or trigger a wide range of mucocutaneous alterations. Early appreciation of adverse cutaneous manifestations of ID seems to have commensurate significance not only in predicting the presence of undiagnosed ID, but also fo

Retained primary teeth in STAT3 hyper-IgE syndrome: early intervention in childhood is essential.

BACKGROUND: STAT3 hyper-IgE syndrome (STAT3-HIES) is a rare primary immunodeficiency that clinically overlaps with atopic dermatitis. In addition to eczema, elevated serum-IgE, and recurrent infections, STAT3-HIES patients suffer from characteristic facies, midline defects, and retained primary teeth. To optimize dental management we assessed the development of dentition and the long-term outcomes of dental treatment in 13 molecularly defined STAT3-HIES patients using questionnaires, radiographs, and dental investigations. RESULTS: Primary tooth eruption was unremarkable in all STAT3-HIES pat

Ramipril-induced generalized pustular psoriasis: case report and literature review.

Mrs. M.S. is a 67-year-old African American woman with a history of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis who presented to the emergency room with complaint of new-onset rash, chills, and fatigue after she started taking ramipril (5 mg orally every day) for her hypertension. The rash involved entire upper chest, both arms, palms, and soles and was characterized as exfoliating with scattered small pustules of 1-2 mm in size. Patient was admitted with a differential diagnosis of exfoliative dermatitis versus adverse drug reaction for which her ramipril was stopped. After admission, the pa

Histological and parasitological distinctive findings in clinically-lesioned and normal-looking skin of dogs with different clinical stages of leishmaniosis.

BACKGROUND: Normal-looking skin of dogs with leishmaniosis frequently shows microscopic lesions along with the presence of Leishmania amastigotes. However, histological lesions with or without detection of amastigotes might not occur in less severe clinical cases. In addition, comparative studies between paired clinically-lesioned and normal-looking skin samples from dogs with different disease severity are lacking. The objective of this study was to compare histological and parasitological findings by Leishmania immunohistochemistry (IHC) and quantitative PCR (qPCR) on paired clinically-lesio

ZelsuvmiTM (Berdazimer) Topical Gel.

ZelsuvmiTM (berdazimer) topical gel has been approved recently for the treatment of molluscum contagiosum (MC) in patients aged ≥1 year. In three phase 3, randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trials of similar design, berdazimer was investigated for the treatment of MC. Berdazimer or vehicle was applied once daily on MC lesions until complete lesion clearance was observed or for up to 12 weeks. Berdazimer demonstrated higher efficacy in achieving the primary outcome at week 12 (Trial 1, berdazimer: 32.4% [144/444] and vehicle: 19.7% [88/447]; Trial 2, berdazimer: 30% [71/237] and vehic

Skin infection by Staphylococcus aureus in a fisherman: difficulty in continuing work on board.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aim of this study was to understand why an infectious skin disease due to colonisation by Staphylococcus aureus methi-S led to disembarkation of a fisherman for treatment and follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: While discussing this case we have analysed different reasons why the studied fisherman could not be successfully treated on board. RESULTS: A 42-year-old fisherman was first presented with skin lesions while fishing for hake. When the fisherman had developed a fever and exfoliative skin lesions on both hands, the ship's captain called the radio-medical centre fo

Leiner's disease (erythroderma desquamativum): A review and approach to therapy.

Leiner's disease (LD) is a rare and serious syndrome of infantile erythroderma of severe and progressive generalized seborrheic-like dermatitis, recalcitrant diarrhea, malabsorption and wasting, and recurrent local and systemic infections. The purpose of this study is to provide an updated review on management with a summarized review of available peer-reviewed articles on LD. The mechanisms underlying this disease process remain unclear. The diagnosis includes demonstration of deficient opsonic activity along with the clinical tetrad of erythroderma, persistent gastrointestinal disturbance, s

Erythrodermic verrucous psoriasis.

Verrucous psoriasis is characterized clinically by symmetric hypertrophic verrucous plaques on an erythematous base and histologically by overlapping features of both verrucae and psoriasis with negative human papilloma virus (HPV) studies. A 46-year-old African-American male presented with an 8-year history of extensive malodorous, symmetric, verrucous plaques manifesting as erythroderma. Biopsies showed epidermal hyperplasia and papillomatosis, parakeratosis with neutrophils, and dilated vessels in the dermal papillae. The polymerase chain reaction of lesional skin was negative for HPV DNA,

Neonatal and infantile erythroderma: a clinical and follow-up study of 42 cases.

Erythroderma in neonates and infants is a frequently encountered problem in the daily practice of pediatric dermatology. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of various causes of this clinical entity, as well as which clinical and laboratory findings are useful in the differentiation of these causes, and to assess the evolution of this disease in this age group. Forty-two patients with erythroderma under 1 year of age were included in this study. A follow-up period of 3-5 years was completed. The study was performed in the Department of Dermatology, Al-Sadr and Alhakeem t

Adult T-cell leukemia with regression of erythroderma and simultaneous emergence of leukemia.

A patient with smoldering adult T-cell leukemia had refractory erythroderma. Concomitant with the development of acute leukemia, the cutaneous lesions disappeared spontaneously. This suggests an extensive release of tumor cells from the skin to the blood.
