BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis of the head and neck (HNAD) has been recognized as a separate entity. Malassezia furfur, a lipophilic yeast, is considered to be a pathogenic allergen in this form of atopic dermatitis.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of IgE anti-M.-furfur antibodies and their relation to the severity of the disease.
METHODS: IgE anti-M.-furfur antibodies were assayed in 106 patients with HNAD. Controls included 25 patients with non-HNAD, 20 with nonatopic dermatitis and 16 with seborrheic dermatitis (including 4 with AIDS).

Periorificial dermatitis (PD) is an inflammatory disorder of the facial skin that mainly occurs around the mouth and manifests as erythema, papules, pustules, scales and other lesions. Special attention is needed in the clinical diagnosis of PD to distinguish it from acne, seborrheic dermatitis (SD), granulomatous rosacea (GR), sarcoidosis and childhood granulomatous periorificial dermatitis (CGPD). Since infestation of the eyelashes by pubic lice is relatively uncommon, it might well be misdiagnosed as bacterial conjunctivitis, allergic contact dermatitis, or seborrheic and rosacea blepharitis. We present and graphically illustrate a case of blepharoconjunctivits attributed to P. Pubis infestation and offer further support for the use of the ophthalmologic agent 4 percent pilocarpine gel as a primary or adjunctive treatment modality.

We had previously investigated skin problems of musicians (N = 117) working in a professional orchestra. The results of this survey suggest a significant incidence of occupational and stress-related skin problems in musicians such as hyperhydrosis, lichen planus, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and urticaria. It was thought that emotional factors exacerbate their problems [6]. This article discusses the importance of psychiatric consultations in dermatologic problems.

Forty-eight infants with seborrhea capitis were treated with a preparation containing a polypeptide-fatty acid complex and tyrothricin in a propylene glycol vehicle, to determine if this material was non-toxic and if it was effective in the treatment of infantile seborrheic dermatitis. In this uncontrolled study, the preparation was effective in 45 of 48 infants so treated; a possible mild sensitivity reaction was observed in one infant.

Eyelid dermatitis and/or periocular dermatitis (ED/PD) is commonly seen in a variety of skin diseases such as seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, but is most often associated with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD).
