Sexuality in subjects with intellectual disability: an educational intervention proposal for parents and counselors in developing countries.

In developing countries, the study of intellectual disability has enormous knowledge gaps, especially in the areas of intervention, utilization of services and legislation. This article provides information not only for aiding in the potential development of sexuality in individuals with intellectual disability, but also for fostering their social integration. In Mexico and the region, in order to develop educational interventions for promoting sexual health, it is necessary to consider the following priorities: a) mental health professionals should have the knowledge or receive training for c…

Incentive-based conservation programs in developing countries: a review of some key issues and suggestions for improvements.

Biodiversity conservation in developing countries has been a challenge because of the combination of rising human populations, rapid technological advances, severe social hardships, and extreme poverty. To address the social, economic, and ecological limitations of people-free parks and reserves, incentives have been incorporated into conservation programs in the hopes of making conservation meaningful to local people. However, such incentive-based programs have been implemented with little consideration for their ability to fulfill promises of greater protection of biodiversity. Evaluations o…

Can we rely on public data as a source of information for cancer registry in developing countries?

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although a "hospital-based cancer registry" is important in improving patient care, a "population-based cancer registry" with emphasis on epidemiology is important in allocating health care resources and prioritizing public health programs. Because of its reliance on retrieved clinical and para-clinical documents, there is some limitation in registering all cancer incidents in this system, especially in developing countries. In this study we examined the possibility of using public data as a complementary source of information for recording cancers in a population-based cancer…

Maternal survival in developing countries: what has been done, what can be achieved in the next decade.

Every year, approximately 600000 women die of pregnancy-related causes - 98% of these deaths occur in developing countries. For every woman who dies, at least 30 suffer injuries and often, permanent disability. The challenge today is to re-orient programmes on priority interventions, and to mobilize sufficient resources for their implementation. More resources have been put into antenatal care than into delivery care and the management of complications of births and unsafe abortions. This article describes the effective strategies for reducing maternal death, their policy requirements and prog…

Lipid intake during pregnancy in developing countries: possible effect of essential fatty acid deficiency on fetal growth.

There is a strong epidemiological association between poor nutritional status and low-birthweight (LBW) newborns. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 95% of total LBW in the world are born in developing countries. Nevertheless, the nutritional etiology of intra uterine growth retardation (IUGR) is still controversial and not yet established largely because of contradictory nutritional studies in pregnancy. In 1981 Menon et al described an animal model of IUGR due to mild deficiency in essential fatty acids (EFA, linoleic and alpha linolenic acids), with a strong correlation betwe…

Nutritional effects on response of children in developing countries to respiratory tract pathogens: implications for vaccine development.

Malnutrition and respiratory disease commonly occur together, and the immunologic defects caused by malnutrition may affect clinical responses and the impact of vaccines. These defects include impaired maturation and function of T lymphocytes, diminished secretory immune responses, poor humoral antibody responses to polysaccharide antigens, deficient complement activity (especially the alternative pathway), and impaired antimicrobial mechanisms by phagocytic cells. In addition, protein-energy malnutrition often leads to very high serum levels of IgE as a result of altered T cell regulation of

Developing an interprofessional self-reflection logbook in reproductive health in low-middle income countries: educational design research.

PURPOSE: Remoteness from institutions challenges supervision in interprofessional education (IPE) in a community setting in reproductive health in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). In this setting, IPE would benefit from an instrument that supports self-reflection. The use of logbooks could provide such an instrument. This study aims to develop and validate a logbook as a self-reflection instrument. METHODS: The authors used an Educational Design Research (EDR) approach to develop a logbook as a self-reflection instrument for an IPE on reproductive health in a community setting in Indo

Orthopaedic Trauma Management in Developing Countries: A Narrative Review of Clinical Practices, Socioeconomic Challenges, and Healthcare Outcomes.

Orthopaedic trauma imposes a disproportionate clinical and socioeconomic burden on developing countries, where rising injury rates intersect with fragile health systems and limited financial protection. This review synthesises evidence from 2015 to 2025 to examine epidemiological patterns, clinical practices, system-level constraints, and socioeconomic determinants shaping orthopaedic trauma outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Using a narrative-synthesis methodology and drawing from major global databases and grey literature, the review identifies persistent deficiencies acro…

Evaluating alternatives to the Widal test for typhoid fever diagnosis in developing countries: A targeted literature review.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid disease, caused by Salmonella typhi, is prevalent in developing countries with poor sanitation. The Widal test, despite its century-old history, has drawbacks in diagnostic capacity because of inherent characteristics, cross-reactivity and repeated exposure to the pathogen in endemic regions. AIM: The study evaluates the utility of the Widal test for the diagnosis of typhoid infections and emphasises the need for a better diagnostic modality in endemic regions. SETTING: The study included research conducted in developing countries where typhoid fever is endemic. METHOD: …

Infectious etiologies of persistent and chronic diarrhea in Asian developing countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Infectious causes of diarrhea contribute significantly to morbidity in Asia. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of infectious etiologies of persistent and chronic diarrhea in Asian adults. Searches were performed on PubMed and Scopus for studies from January 1, 1970, to May 30, 2023. Sixteen studies were identified and included. The meta-analysis was conducted with the random-effects method, estimating the pooled prevalence of groups of infectious pathogens as causes of persistent and chronic diarrhea among Asian adults. The findings were highly heterogeneous

Rate of Tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) Fusion Using the Surgical Implant Generation Network (SIGN) Intramedullary Nail in Developing Countries.

Outcomes of the Surgical Implant Generation Network (SIGN) nail have been reported for femur and tibial fractures, but its use in tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis (TTCA) is not well studied. Radiographic and clinical outcomes of TTCA using the SIGN database in patients with > 6 months of radiographic follow up were analyzed. Rates of tibiotalar (TT) fusion and subtalar (ST) fusion at final follow up were assessed by two independent reviewers. Of the 62 patients identified, use of the SIGN nail for TCCA resulted in 53% rate of fusion in the TT joint and 20% in the ST joint. Thirty-seven patients
