Activation of the right inferior frontal cortex during assessment of facial emotion.

We measured regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) using positron emission tomography (PET) to determine which brain regions are involved in the assessment of facial emotion. We asked right-handed normal subjects to assess the signalers' emotional state based on facial gestures and to assess the facial attractiveness, as well as to discriminate the background color of the facial stimuli, and compared the activity produced by each condition. The right inferior frontal cortex showed significant activation during the assessment of facial emotion in comparison with the other two tests. The activated

The signal detection ability of patients with auditory hallucination: analysis using the continuous performance test.

Signal detection theory is appropriate for analyzing the problem of whether auditory hallucination arises from a sensory or judgmental disorder. In the present study the sensory discrimination ability and decision bias of psychiatric patients with auditory hallucination was investigated by using the visual continuous performance test. Based on signal detection theory the d' (d prime) and the lnbeta value (the natural logarithm of the beta value) were calculated. The d' is indicator of discriminating ability, whereas the lnbeta value is an indicator of decision bias. The psychiatric inpatients

Can the recognition of living things really be selectively impaired?

Brain damage sometimes impairs recognition of living things relative to nonliving things. One interpretation of this dissociation is that recognition of living things depends on specialized mechanisms not used for the recognition of nonliving things; another is that patients have damage to a general purpose system, and recognition of living things taxes this system more heavily. Farah et al., (Neuropsychologia, Vol. 29, pp. 185-193, 1991 [7]) found that a set of general factors did not account for patients' impaired recognition of living things; thus they favored the specialized mechanisms acc

Nifedipine blocks retention of a visual discrimination task in chicks.

Reports that the dihydropyridine Ca2+ channel antagonists may facilitate memory led to the present study of the behavioral effects of nifedipine. Ninety-two 4-day-old male chicks received 0, 100 nM, 100 microM, or 10 mM nifedipine. Drugs were administered in volumes of 2 microliters into the fourth cerebral ventricle 5 min before training on a visual discrimination task. Nifedipine did not produce any detectable changes in behavior during acquisition trials. Retention, however, was impaired 24 h after training in the 100 nM and 100 microM nifedipine-treated chicks, which made significantly mor

Discriminative stimulus properties of cocaine, alone and in combination with buprenorphine, morphine and naltrexone.

Rats were trained to discriminate a dose of 10.0 mg/kg cocaine from saline. During substitution tests, both cocaine (5.6-10.0 mg/kg) and d-amphetamine (1.0-3.0 mg/kg) produced greater than 80% responding on the cocaine-appropriate level. In contrast, buprenorphine (0.03-0.56 mg/kg), morphine (0.3-10.0 mg/kg) and naltrexone (1.0-10.0 mg/kg) failed to substitute for the cocaine stimulus, up to doses that substantially decreased rate of responding. When the cocaine dose-effect curve was redetermined in the presence of selected doses of buprenorphine, the amount of cocaine-appropriate responding f

Atropine effects on delayed discrimination performance of rats.

The effects of atropine sulfate (ATS) and atropine methyl nitrate (ATM) on the conditional discrimination behavior of rats were investigated in eight-hour experimental sessions. Responding of rats was reinforced on either a lighted or a darkened lever depending on whether lights over both levers had been on during the preceding sample portion of the trial. Zero-delay and four-second-delay trials were randomly interspersed. Quality of performance was analyzed using the A' sensitivity measure of signal detection theory. Both drugs reduced both sensitivity and the percentage of trials on which re

The Porteus Maze Test in the measurement of reflection/impulsivity.

This study investigated the use of the Porteus Maze test as a measure of reflection/impulsivity when used with both normal and retarded subjects. Study 1 (N = 90) provided sample data for three equal groups of 30 adolescent students in the regular school. These were defined as above average, average, and below average in general intelligence. In addition to measures of qualitative and quantitative scoring, data were also available from Kagan's Matching Familiar Figures Test and a specially constructed Teachers' Rating Scale. The below-average group showed a significantly more impulsive approac

A Prediction Model for Types of Treatment Indicated for Patients with Temporomandibular Disorders.

AIMS: To identify potential predictors of types of treatment indicated for patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and to develop, validate, and calibrate a prediction model for type of treatment. METHODS: The derivation cohort at baseline was comprised of 356 adult patients with TMD. Patient and disease characteristics were recorded at baseline as potential predictors. Types of treatment indicated for TMD patients were the end points of the model, classified into no treatment, physical treatment only (including splint and/or physiotherapy), and combined physical and psychological tre

Lack of Specific Involvement of (+)-Naloxone and (+)-Naltrexone on the Reinforcing and Neurochemical Effects of Cocaine and Opioids.

Effective medications for drug abuse remain a largely unmet goal in biomedical science. Recently, the (+)-enantiomers of naloxone and naltrexone, TLR4 antagonists, have been reported to attenuate preclinical indicators of both opioid and stimulant abuse. To further examine the potential of these compounds as drug-abuse treatments, we extended the previous assessments to include a wider range of doses and procedures. We report the assessment of (+)-naloxone and (+)-naltrexone on the acute dopaminergic effects of cocaine and heroin determined by in vivo microdialysis, on the reinforcing effects

[Esthetic and corrective dermatology: clinical applications and social role].

Skin diseases may have severe aesthetic and psychological repercussions leading sometimes to discriminations and social isolation. Dermatologists have contributed to the development of many cosmetic procedures: peelings, botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid injections, lasers, blepharoplasty, facelift, etc. Many of these treatments have interesting clinical applications and may help numerous patients with skin diseases to return to a normal social life.

Italian Validation of the Scale of Psychological Abuse in Intimate Partner Violence (EAPA-P).

Psychological and emotional forms of violence often represent a danger alarm and an important risk factor for other forms of intimate partner violence (IPV). Measuring psychological violence raises several issues of conceptualization and definition, which lead to the development of several assessment instruments; among them, the Scale of Psychological Abuse in Intimate Partner Violence (EAPA-P) showed good psychometric proprieties in a Spanish population and is used to identify which strategies are acted out to engage in psychological violence. The aim of the present study was to investigate t

Personality traits and pattern of beliefs of near-death(-like) experiencers.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the potential personality and psychological predictors of near-death experiences (NDEs), and fewer yet those of near-death-like experiences (NDEs-like; similar phenomenology reported after a non-life-threatening context). This study investigated whether personality traits (Openness, Extraversion, Pleasantness, Conscientiousness, and Neuroticism), dissociative experiences, Fantasy proneness, disposition toward auditory hallucinations, absorption trait, and endorsement of paranormal and spiritual beliefs could be associated with the recall of NDEs(-like). Anger and postcombat mental health: validation of a brief anger measure with U.S. soldiers postdeployed from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The involvement of anger in the psychological adjustment of current war veterans, particularly in conjunction with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), warrants greater research focus than it has received. The present study concerns a brief anger measure, Dimensions of Anger Reactions (DAR), intended for use in large sample studies and as a screening tool. The concurrent validity, discriminant validity, and incremental validity of the instrument were examined in conjunction with behavioral health data for 3,528 treatment-seeking soldiers who had been in combat in Iraq and Afgha

Missing developmental and sociocultural perspectives: Comment on the "Psychology of Terrorism" special issue (2017).

Two critical perspectives were missing from the special issue entitled "Psychology of Terrorism": developmental and sociocultural. From a developmental point of view, the fact that most individuals who engage in terrorist groups or terroristic acts are young men is critically important. Perspectives from adolescent development, neuroscience, and social psychology can shed light on why this is the case. In addition, sociocultural perspectives are needed to answer important community-level questions, such as why some communities are more prone to having youth recruited for terrorism than others.

Over a half-century encapsulated: a multicultural content analysis of the Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1954-2009.

Articles including multicultural content published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology (JCP), from 1954 to 2009, were examined for themes. Multicultural content in this study was broadly defined to include the following identities: race/ethnicity, gender/sex, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, social status, disability, age, and intersections. Inclusion of articles focused on each of these identity domains was reported by decade. Gender/sex was the most prevalent multicultural identity found in the JCP, followed by race/ethnicity. The most common themes for multicultural articles,
