Are there subgroups of bulimia nervosa based on comorbid psychiatric disorders?

OBJECTIVE: The current study sought to determine whether there are subtypes of bulimia nervosa (BN) differentiated by comorbid psychiatric disorders. METHOD: Data on comorbid psychiatric diagnoses in female relatives of probands and controls in the Collaborative Study of the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) who met criteria for BN (as outlined in the 3rd Rev. ed. of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) were analyzed using latent class analysis. Resulting latent classes were compared on a variety of variables related to impulsive behaviors and psychological functioning. RES

Forensic evaluation of problematic Internet use.

Problematic Internet use appears to be a growing concern in many criminal and civil legal proceedings. Problems range from inappropriate personal use of the Internet in the workplace and excessive use of online games, pornography, and gambling, to cyberbullying among children and adolescents and numerous forms of criminal activity. Forensic psychiatric evaluations may help courts or other agencies to understand individual cases and to discern whether a psychiatric disability may be involved. Furthermore, the forensic psychiatrist may be asked to formulate a prognosis or to suggest which treatm

Genetic analysis of bulimia nervosa: methods and sample description.

OBJECTIVE: Twin and family studies suggest that genetic variants contribute to the pathogenesis of bulimia nervosa (BN) and anorexia nervosa (AN). The Price Foundation has supported an international, multisite study of families with these disorders to identify these genetic variations. The current study presents the clinical characteristics of this sample as well as a description of the study methodology. METHOD: All probands met modified criteria for BN or bulimia nervosa with a history of AN (BAN) as defined in the 4th ed. of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV

Affective instability and impulsivity in borderline personality and bipolar II disorders: similarities and differences.

OBJECTIVES: many studies have reported a high degree of comorbidity between mood disorders, among which are bipolar disorders, and borderline personality disorder and some studies have suggested that these disorders are co-transmitted in families. However, few studies have compared personality traits between these disorders to determine whether there is a dimensional overlap between the two diagnoses. The aim of this study was to compare impulsivity, affective lability and intensity in patients with borderline personality and bipolar II disorder and in subjects with neither of these diagnoses.

Alternative methods of classifying eating disorders: models incorporating comorbid psychopathology and associated features.

There is increasing recognition of the limitations of current approaches to psychiatric classification. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the eating disorders (EDs). Several alternative methods of classifying EDs have been proposed, which can be divided into two major groups: 1) those that have classified individuals on the basis of disordered eating symptoms; and, 2) those that have classified individuals on the basis of comorbid psychopathology and associated features. Several reviews have addressed symptom-based approaches to ED classification, but we are aware of no paper that has crit

Restless legs syndrome: understanding its consequences and the need for better treatment.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a very common neurologic disorder with a prevalence of disease resulting in moderate and severe health impact of at least 2.7%. The purpose of this review, commissioned by the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group, was to assess the medical literature on the consequences of RLS and the limitations of existing therapies. We conclude that RLS affects quality of life at least as severely as other common chronic illnesses and in particular results in insomnia, anxiety and depression. Epidemiologic evidence suggests a relationship between RLS and cardiovas

The relationship of obsessive-compulsive disorder to possible spectrum disorders: results from a family study.

BACKGROUND: The familial relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and "obsessive-compulsive spectrum" disorders is unclear. This study investigates the relationship of OCD to somatoform disorders (body dysmorphic disorder [BDD] and hypochondriasis), eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa), pathologic "grooming" conditions (e.g., nail biting, skin picking, trichotillomania), and other impulse control disorders (e.g., kleptomania, pathologic gambling, pyromania) using blinded family study methodology. METHODS: Eighty case and 73 control probands, as well as

Substance use disorders: Relationship with intermittent explosive disorder and with aggression, anger, and impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: A relationship between substance use and aggression has been noted for decades. While substance use appears to be associated with an increased risk of aggressive behavior, no study has yet reported on the pattern of comorbidity and temporal relationship between impulsive aggression (i.e., intermittent explosive disorder) and substance use disorders (SUD), specifically. METHODS: To specify these relationships, we examined DSM-5 diagnosis data from diagnostic interviews of 1355 adults who met one of five non-overlapping diagnostic subgroups: those with intermittent explosive disorde

Systematic Review of Pharmacological and Behavioral Treatments for Skin Picking Disorder.

Skin picking disorder (SPD) is a newly recognized psychiatric disorder in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. A systematic review was conducted to assess the efficacy of pharmacological and behavioral interventions for SPD. Electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or uncontrolled trials involving at least 10 subjects that examined the efficacy of pharmacological and behavioral interventions for SPD. We examined the improvement associated with interventions compared with inactive control conditions in RCTs and improvement over

A computerized test of self-control predicts classroom behavior.

We assessed choices on a computerized test of self-control (CTSC) for a group of children with features of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a group of controls. Thirty boys participated in the study. Fifteen of the children had been rated by their parents as hyperactive and inattentive, and 15 were age- and gender-matched controls in the same classroom. The children were observed in the classroom for three consecutive mornings, and data were collected on their activity levels and attention. The CTSC consisted of two tasks. In the delay condition, children chose to receive th

Non-suicidal Self-injury in Different Eating Disorder Types: Relevance of Personality Traits and Gender.

The study explored lifetime prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in female and male individuals with eating disorders (ED) and compared ED symptoms, general psychopathology and personality traits across individuals with and without a history of NSSI. The incremental discriminative capacity of gender on the manifestation of lifetime NSSI was also studied. A total sample of 1649 consecutively admitted ED patients (1515 women and 134 men) participated in the current study [339 ED + NSSI (ED with NSSI) and 1310 ED - NSSI (ED without NSSI)]. Specific self-report measures were included and

Antiepileptics for aggression and associated impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Aggression is a major public health issue and is integral to several mental health disorders. Antiepileptic drugs may reduce aggression by acting on the central nervous system to reduce neuronal hyper-excitability associated with aggression. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of antiepileptic drugs in reducing aggression and associated impulsivity. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, metaRegister of Controlled Trials (mRCT) and ClinicalTrials.gov to April 2009. We also searched Cochrane Schizophrenia Group's register of trials on aggression,

Data-driven analysis of simultaneous EEG/fMRI reveals neurophysiological phenotypes of impulse control.

Response inhibition is the ability to suppress inadequate but prepotent or ongoing response tendencies. A fronto-striatal network is involved in these processes. Between-subject differences in the intra-individual variability have been suggested to constitute a key to pathological processes underlying impulse control disorders. Single-trial EEG/fMRI analysis allows to increase sensitivity for inter-individual differences by incorporating intra-individual variability. Thirty-eight healthy subjects performed a visual Go/Nogo task during simultaneous EEG/fMRI. Of 38 healthy subjects, 21 subjects

Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in an anxiety disorders population.

Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a life-long, chronic disorder, which has its onset in childhood and is associated with significant functional impairment. ADHD appears to be highly comorbid with other psychiatric disorders, however, literature is lacking concerning ADHD/anxiety comorbidity. To that end, we examined the prevalence of ADHD in an anxiety disorder sample. Consecutive patients referred to an anxiety disorders clinic completed a variety of anxiety disorder self-report measures as well as the Adult ADHD self-report scale and were clinically assessed using the

Response inhibition in children with conduct disorder and borderline intellectual functioning.

The aim of the study was to investigate impulse control in children with conduct disorder (CD) plus borderline intellectual functioning (BIF), in children with BIF-only, and in a control group with a normal IQ. For this purpose, a Go-No-Go test with varying inter-stimulus-intervals was used. The group CD plus BIF made more errors of commission than the group with BIF only. Therefore, it was concluded that poor impulse control in the group CD plus BIF was associated with CD, not with IQ level. Poor impulse control in the group CD plus BIF was independent of the presentation rate of the stimuli.

Psychological and pharmacological treatments of intermittent explosive disorder: a meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is characterised by recurrent, sudden episodes of impulsive aggression that are disproportionate to the provocation. The condition's management remains challenging due to the variability in treatment efficacy and the absence of Food and Drug Administration-approved interventions specifically for IED. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effectiveness of existing treatments for IED. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducte

Self-control problems in Intermittent Explosive Disorder: Presentation of an explanatory approach.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) is an impulsive aggression disorder with self-control problems. However, the mechanisms underpinning the self-control problems in IED have not been clearly investigated. Therefore, this study examined the nature of self-control problems and their types, including cognitive inhibition, behavioral inhibition, and emotional interference in IED. METHODS: Participants included three groups: IED (n = 54), psychiatric control (n = 59), and healthy control (n = 62). They were first screened with SCL-90-R, and then they were clinically i
