BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We wanted to assess our surgical results focusing on the patients' quality of life. We present our experience with laparoscopic surgery for epiphrenic esophageal diverticulum. Short- and long-term results of surgical therapy were analyzed.
METHODS: Eight patients were examined with a symptom-causing epiphrenic diverticulum. Patients underwent complex gastroenterologic examinations before and after surgery. Laparoscopic transhiatal epiphrenic diverticulectomy, Heller cardiomyotomy, and Dor anterior partial fundoplication were performed on 7 patients. One patient unde…

Since Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is rarely diagnosed in adults, there is no consensus on what type of procedure to be performed for symptomatic MD and whether to resect or not an accidentally discovered MD. Treatment of symptomatic MD is definitive surgery, including diverticulectomy, wedge, and segmental resection. The type of procedure depends on: (a) the integrity of diverticulum base and adjacent ileum; (b) the presence and location of ectopic tissue within MD. The presence of ectopic tissue cannot be accurately predicted intraoperatively by palpation and macroscopic appearance. When prese…

Urinary stones in female urethral diverticulum are rarely seen. We report a 79-year-old woman who presented with irritative lower urinary tract symptoms and vaginal cystocele with incontinence. The urethral stones in the diverticulum were successfully extracted through the trans-urethral route and anterior tension-free vaginal mesh was applied one month later. The patient has been well, with no lower urinary symptoms or incontinence for 4 months.

A Meckel's diverticulum is a common anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. Although the majority of patients do not have any symptoms, malignancies can develop inside these diverticula, with neuroendocrine tumours being the most common. Diverticulectomy is the best option for complicated diverticula but prophylactic resection of asymptomatic diverticula in adults remains controversial. We present a case series of three patients with a neuroendocrine tumour found in a Meckel's diverticulum. Given the number of asymptomatic diverticula not resected, it seems likely that incidental neuroendocrine…

Sigmoid sinus diverticulum (SSD) is a rare vascular disorder due to dehiscence of the sigmoid plate. It may be associated with prediverticular venous sinus stenosis (SS) and usually presents as pulsatile tinnitus. The mechanism of development of the SSD and tinnitus from a sinus diverticulum and associated SS is unclear. Previous case reports have suggested that remodeling of the venous system targeting the stenosis, elimination of the diverticulum, or both, have resulted in symptom relief. We present a case of SSD with SS, treated by stenting of the stenosis along with coil embolization of th…

Congenital diverticulum of male urethra is an uncommon entity. Neglected management complicates the process in the form of calculi formation and recurrent urinary infection. A 10-year-old boy presented with urinary voiding disturbances and development of a painless hard lump at the penoscrotal junction. Imaging demonstrated presence of anterior urethral diverticulum with contained calculi in it. Open urethral diverticulectomy, extraction of multiple calculi, and primary urethral reconstruction over a Foley catheter was carried out. Early diagnosis and individualized surgical management of cong…

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the treatment options and compare patient management with the literature for patients operated on for an acute abdomen who had complications due to inflammation of the Meckel's diverticulum at our clinics.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study retrospectively evaluated 14 patients who had been operated on for acute abdomen and had been diagnosed with Meckel's diverticulitis (MD) in Ege University Medical Faculty Department of General Surgery, between October 2007 and October 2012.
RESULTS: Fourteen patients with a diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulitis (MD…

Female urethral diverticula are uncommon and are more frequent between the third and fifth decades of life. They are usually diagnosed late. Most urethral diverticula are related to recurrent infections of the periurethral glands or urethral trauma. Cystourethrography and magnetic resonance imaging are the most valuable diagnostic methods. The treatment of choice is thte resection of the diverticulum.

A 62-year-old man was admitted with generalised abdominal pain, constipation and vomiting. His abdomen was markedly distended and tender on general examination with signs of local peritonism in the left iliac fossa. He was initially diagnosed with likely acute diverticulitis and treated conservatively. A CT scan the next day showed fluid filled, dilated small bowel loops consistent with small bowel obstruction and there was a suggestion of an abscess in the left iliac fossa region. An urgent laparotomy was performed, which identified a perforated Meckel diverticulum.

Diverticulum of female urethra is rare, often discovered during complications. We report a case of diverticulum of female urethra containing multiple calculi in a multiparous woman of 52 years old. She has consulted for dysuria and a hard painful periurethral mass in the anterior vagina wall. The diagnosis was easily established by physical examination and confirmed by plain radiographs of the lower urinary tract and endovaginal ultrasound. The patient was treated successfully by diverticulectomy.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most prevalent abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract seen in approximately 2% of the population. Diagnosing complicated diverticulum is difficult, for its capacity to mime multiple disorders such as appendicitis, ulcer disease, enterocolitis, Chron disease, sigmoid diverticulitis, cholecystitis, and it should be considered in all patients with unexplained chronic abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, unexpected cause of intestinal obstruction or acute abdomen. Herewith we provide an illustrative presentation, emphasizing the difficulties …

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: In this study, we define the histopathological features of female urethral diverticula and attempt to elucidate its pathogenesis and etiology.
METHODS: We analyzed 22 clinical records of women diagnosed with urethral diverticula. We collected clinical, surgical, and pathological data. Pathological re-assessment was performed using hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson stains.
RESULTS: The predominant epithelial types were squamous (41.9%), columnar (31.8%), combined squamous and columnar (18.2%), and cuboidal (13.6%). There was no case of the transitional type. Epithe

Urethral diverticulum is a localised out pouching or fusiform dilatation of the urethra. It is an uncommon clinical entity affecting both males and females. Although, the diagnosis could be straightforward in the males, it may present as a diagnostic puzzle in the female because it often presents with non-specific symptomatology and diagnosis may not be easily made with common investigation techniques. Two cases of urethral diverticulum are presented to highlight the aetiopathogenesis of urethral diverticulum.
