BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: The optimum material for heart valves bioprostheses remains in dispute. We have created a biological valve made from hepatic Glisson's capsule and named 'Bioglis'. Experimental studies have shown the major characteristics of the 'Bioglis' valve to be equivalent to, and in some cases superior to, those of traditional valves made from xenopericardial tissue. We present the first experience of the 'Bioglis' valve use in surgical treatment of Ebstein's anomaly.
METHODS: Twelve consecutive patients (age range: 7-48 years) with Ebstein's anomaly who underwent surger

Ebstein's anomaly appearing during the neonatal period carries a high mortality rate. We report the perioperative management of two neonates with severe Ebstein's anomaly associated with pulmonary atresia. Their chest radiography revealed massive cardiomegaly, with cardiothoracic ratio of 90% and 100%, respectively. Their tracheas were intubated immediately after birth because of severe respiratory distress. The babies were laid in the prone position and one of them was managed with high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFO) for prevention of pulmonary barotrauma and extensive atelectasis in

BACKGROUND: Ebstein's anomaly is a rare congenital cardiac defect of the tricuspid valve (TV) leading to severe tricuspid insufficiency (TI).
METHODS: In ten patients, 6 adults (39-53 years) and 4 children (5-10 years), operated between 1989 and 1995 echocardiography was performed pre and post repair and at follow-up. Patients were assessed in our institution at two cut-off points, resulting in a mean first follow-up of 17 +/-15 months and a mean second follow-up of 53+/-23 months. All patients had additional congenital cardiac defects (ASD,VSD). In all patients the TV was repaired by techniq

The successful use of nitric oxide (NO) inhalation in a critically ill neonate with Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve is reported for the first time. This use of inhaled NO therapy suggests a therapeutic intervention that directly addresses the pathophysiologic process of severe neonatal Ebstein's anomaly.

Ebstein's anomaly is a congenital deformity of the tricuspid valve consisting mainly of leaflet malinsertion. Clinical presentation varies from asymptomatic patients to those with congestive heart failure secondary to significant valvular regurgitation and low right ventricular output. We report here the case of an infant with a diagnosis of corrected transposition of the great arteries and Ebstein's deformity of the left-sided tricuspid valve who developed pulmonary hypertension and endocardial fibroelastosis, two unusual associations with this lesion. We also discuss the pathophysiology of t

BACKGROUND: In patients with Ebstein's anomaly, localization of accessory pathways (APs) may be impeded by abnormal local electrograms recorded along the atrialized right ventricle and by the presence of multiple APs. The impact of these factors on radiofrequency (RF) current catheter ablation of APs has not been evaluated yet.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-one patients with Ebstein's anomaly and reentrant atrioventricular tachycardias underwent electrophysiological evaluation and subsequent attempts at RF catheter ablation. Thirty-four right-sided APs were found, with 30 located along the atri

A young man 20 years old was referred to the Institute with Ebstein anomaly. He had experienced palpitations since the age of eight. Those episodes occurred several times a year. During the electrophysiologic study a regular antidromic reciprocating tachycardia was induced using a right atriofascicular connection (Mahaim). The atrial insertion of the Mahaim fibers was in the right posterolateral atrium. Also another orthodromic supraventricular tachycardia was induced with anterograde conduction over atrioventricular node and retrograde conduction over to canceled atrioventricular right poster…

We performed a balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty in a child with Ebstein's anomaly using the standard technique. The procedure reportedly has not been performed in the face of this defect and, although difficult, was safely and successfully accomplished. In patients with Ebstein's anomaly and right ventricular outflow obstruction compounded by pulmonary valve stenosis, application of this technique may delay the need for surgical intervention.

The combination of tetralogy of Fallot and Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve is extremely rare. We report the case of a child with such anatomy, who underwent successful repair of tetralogy in infancy despite the tricuspid valve abnormality.

Two-dimensional echocardiography was performed in 16 patients with Ebstein's anomaly to assess right ventricular anatomy and function in relation to clinical features and prognosis. Measurements of right ventricular anatomy and function were established in 10 normal subjects for comparison. Ten patients were in New York Heart Association functional class I, four in class II and one each in classes III and IV. Right ventricular morphology and the three tricuspid valve leaflets were assessed from right ventricular inflow tract and apical four chamber views. The anterior tricuspid leaflet was abn

Probable causes of ECG abnormalities in Ebstein's anomaly were investigated by comparing tracings from 18 young patients with the disease (group I) and 20 age-matched patients with a morphologically similar cardiopathy: right ventricular endomyocardial fibrosis (group II). Tall p waves (greater than or equal to 2.5 mm) occurred in about a third of the patients in each group and were attributable to right atriomegaly. 8 patients, 4 from each group, had prolonged P-R intervals (greater than or equal to 17 s) resulting from increased P-R segment (7 cases) and prolonged P-wave duration (4 cases).

We are reporting a case of Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve and another case of a congenital double tricuspid lesion, both associated with pulmonary valve stenosis and with similar hemodynamics and physiopathology. Given that there are few reported cases in the literature, we analyzed the clinical and electrocardiographic findings of both. The utility of the echocardiogram is discussed in the diagnosis of such abnormalities and the angiographic and hemodynamic data commented upon. It is emphasized that right ventricular hypertension (105 mm Hg, and 98 mmHg, respectively) modifies the c

M-mode echocardiographic studies were performed in 11 patients, most of them adults, with Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve, proven by cardiac catheterisation. Simultaneous recordings of the tricuspid and mitral valves were obtained in all cases, the transducer position being outside the left midclavicular line in seven patients. Tricuspid valve closure followed mitral valve closure in all cases, with an interval ranging between 0.04 and 0.14 s. Since, in more than 8500 routine echocardiographic studies a valve closure interval between 0.09 and 0.12 s was seen in only one patient withou
