Uncovering Multidimensional Poverty Experiences in Shaping Children's Socioemotional Trajectories during the First 6 Years of Schooling.

The extant literature has attested to the importance of poverty on child well-being generally using a unidimensional approach. Researchers have yet to establish solid evidence on how multiple dimensions of poverty (e.g., depth, volatility, and spells of exposure) might be associated with children's socioemotional well-being during their early school years. Building upon Bronfenbrenner's bioecological systems theory, this study used latent class analysis to identify poverty patterns by incorporating multiple dimensions of poverty and investigated the relationship between multidimensional povert

Cross-sectional association between ZIP code-level gentrification and homelessness among a large community-based sample of people who inject drugs in 19 US cities.

BACKGROUND: Housing instability has been associated with poor health outcomes among people who inject drugs (PWID). This study investigates the associations of local-level housing and economic conditions with homelessness among a large sample of PWID, which is an underexplored topic to date. METHODS: PWID in this cross-sectional study were recruited from 19 large cities in the USA as part of National HIV Behavioral Surveillance. PWID provided self-reported information on demographics, behaviours and life events. Homelessness was defined as residing on the street, in a shelter, in a single roo

Direct and indirect effects of neighborhood characteristics on the perpetration of dating violence across adolescence.

Neighborhood context plays a role in the development of adolescent health risk behaviors, but few studies have investigated the influence of neighborhoods on the perpetration of dating violence. This longitudinal study examined the direct effects of risky neighborhood structural and physical characteristics on trajectories of the perpetration of dating violence, tested whether collective efficacy mediated these relationships, and determined if the effects varied by the sex of the adolescent. Adolescent data are from a multi-wave longitudinal study from grades 8 to 12; neighborhood data were co

Are economic recessions at the time of leaving school associated with worse physical functioning in later life?

PURPOSE: To examine whether economic conditions at the time of leaving school or college are associated with physical functioning in later life among cohorts in 11 European countries. METHODS: Data came from 10,338 participants in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) aged 50-74 who left school or college between 1956 and 1986. Data on functional limitations, as well as employment, marriage, and fertility retrospective histories were linked to national unemployment rates during the year individuals left school. Models included country-fixed effects and controls for ear

The relative importance of predictors of body mass index change, overweight and obesity in adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative importance of familial, dietary, behavioral, psychological and social risk factors for predicting body mass index (BMI) change, and onset of overweight and obesity among adolescent girls. METHODS: Data from the NHLBI Growth and Health Study (n = 2 150), a longitudinal cohort of girls, were used to identify the most important predictors of change in BMI percentile between the ages of 9 and 19 years, and second, risk for becoming overweight and obese. Forty-one baseline predictors were assessed using a tree-based regression method (Random forest) to rank the

The Social Costs of Gambling: An Economic Perspective.

Much of the opposition to legalized gambling is based on analyses of the social costs that occur as a result of pathological gambling. It is our contention that many, if not most, authors who have contributed to this literature are either unclear or misguided in what they define as social costs. Instead of starting with a clear definition of what constitutes a social cost, these authors have adopted an ad hoc approach-using "common sense" to determine what constitutes losses to society and then attempting to quantify the impact of those activities. We believe this is not, as some suggest, simp

Potential of Essential Oils and Major EO Constituents in the Chemical Control of Spodoptera frugiperda.

Spodoptera frugiperda is a major agricultural pest worldwide, causing significant economic loss to maize crops. Its control largely depends on synthetic pesticides, which contribute to resistance development, harm non-target organisms, and lead to environmental degradation. Essential oils and their main components offer a more sustainable and ecologically sound alternative for the management of S. frugiperda. This study evaluated the effects of selected essential oils and their bioactive compounds on the survival and behavior of S. frugiperda using toxicity and preference assays. Peppermint es

A case study of acceptance and commitment therapy for central disorders of hypersomnolence: opportunities to improve patient-centered and comprehensive treatment approaches.

UNLABELLED: Beyond daytime sleepiness, central disorders of hypersomnolence (including narcolepsy types 1 and 2 and idiopathic hypersomnia) affect the fundamental aspects of everyday life, including mental health, negative self-esteem, relationships, social stigma, and occupational/school problems, all of which can lead to disability. Limited scientifically tested behavioral treatments designed to address the psychological, social, and economic devastation associated with hypersomnia exist. This case report reviews 1 patient's experience with 2 adjuvant interventions for central disorders of h

Preparation of multifunctional Janus nanoparticles on the basis of SPIONs as targeted drug delivery system.

Passing the Blood-Brain-Barrier (BBB) is a challenging aspect in nanomedicine. Utilizing surfactant particles is reported to be a potent strategy for easier BBB penetration. On the other hand, loading different functional molecules on a single particle is therapeutically and economically beneficial. In this study, multifunctional amphiphilic Janus nanoparticles have been prepared on the basis of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. This Janus platform is armed with folic acid targeting agent and Doxorubicin (DOX) drug that have been conjugated on different sides of the nanoparticles. DO

Life skills training: preventing substance misuse by enhancing individual and social competence.

Research concerning the etiology and prevention of substance misuse has led to the development of preventive interventions that are theory-based and effective. One such approach, Life Skills Training (LST), targets key etiologic factors using a conceptual framework derived from social learning theory and problem behavior theory. LST has been extensively tested in a series of randomized trials and found effective in preventing the use/misuse of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other psychoactive drugs. Research demonstrates that it is effective when implemented under different delivery conditio

Addressing the mental health needs of pregnant and parenting adolescents.

Adolescent parenthood is associated with a range of adverse outcomes for young mothers, including mental health problems such as depression, substance abuse, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Teen mothers are also more likely to be impoverished and reside in communities and families that are socially and economically disadvantaged. These circumstances can adversely affect maternal mental health, parenting, and behavior outcomes for their children. In this report, we provide an overview of the mental health challenges associated with teen parenthood, barriers that often prevent teen mothers fr

Moving closer to a public health model of language and learning disabilities: the role of genetics and the search for etiologies.

Continued progress in language and learning disabilities (LDs) research requires a renewed focused on issues of etiology. Genetics research forms a central tenet of such an agenda and is critical in clarifying relationships among oral language development, acquisition of literacy and mathematics, executive function skills, and comorbid conditions. For progress to be made, diversified efforts must continue to emphasize molecular and behavioral genetics (including quantitative genetics) approaches, in concert with multi-disciplinary and multi-modal projects, to provide an integrated understandin

Poverty, unstable housing, and HIV infection among women living in the United States.

Women who are HIV positive incur a higher risk of mortality than men who are HIV positive, a difference which is primarily based in the social context of poverty. Economic crises that lead to homelessness, unmet subsistence needs, and sex exchange often reorder priorities among women with HIV infection, de-emphasizing consistent medical care or the use of antiretroviral therapy. High rates of mental illness, drug use, and victimization further increase health and safety risks. HIV prevention messages highlighting education and behavior change insufficiently address the predicament of indigent

Running on empty: locomotor compensation preserves fish schooling under hypoxia and informs principles for bioinspired swarms.

Environmental stressors such as hypoxia challenge the balance between individual physiological performance and the coordination required for collective behaviors like schooling. Here, we investigate how glass catfish (Kryptopterus vitreolus) modulate locomotor and group-level behavior across a gradient of oxygen saturation (95%-20%) while swimming steadily at a constant cruising speed. We found that tailbeat frequency decreased significantly with declining oxygen (p < 0.0001), alongside reductions in wave speed (p = 0.007). Tailbeat amplitude, by contrast, increased significantly under hypoxia
