Age-related changes in muscle elasticity around the shoulder joint in young male baseball players: A prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal changes of elasticity in the muscle tissues around the shoulder joint during the growth period have not been assessed using shear wave elastography. METHODS: This study enrolled male students aged 13-18 years who played baseball or rubber baseball as an extra-curricular activity during junior high or high school or on a baseball team outside of school. The exclusion criterion was a history of surgery for athletic injury. One hundred and twenty-one boys were included in the study. The elasticity of the superior part of the trapezius, the supraspinatus, and the infraspi…

Distensibility and Gross Elasticity of the Skin at Various Body Sites and Association with Pathological Scarring: A Case Study.

Objective: Pathological scars, including hypertrophic scars and keloids, have a strong predilection for specific regions of the body. Such site specificity might reflect regional differences in skin properties. Greater knowledge about the characteristics of the skin at various body regions can promote the development of clinical approaches to skin incision and flap design and reduce the formation of cutaneous scars. It could also help elucidate the etiology of pathological scar development and progression. Thus, we measured the distensibility and gross elasticity of the skin at various body si…

Exploiting elasticity: Modeling the influence of neural control on mechanics and energetics of ankle muscle-tendons during human hopping.

We present a simplified Hill-type model of the human triceps surae-Achilles tendon complex working on a gravitational-inertial load during cyclic contractions (i.e. vertical hopping). Our goal was to determine the role that neural control plays in governing muscle, or contractile element (CE), and tendon, or series elastic element (SEE), mechanics and energetics within a compliant muscle-tendon unit (MTU). We constructed a 2D parameter space consisting of many combinations of stimulation frequency and magnitude (i.e. neural control strategies). We compared the performance of each control strat

Reproducibility of arterial elasticity parameters derived from radial artery diastolic pulse contour analysis: the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this report was to describe the reproducibility of arterial elasticity parameters derived from radial artery diastolic pulse contour analysis. METHODS: Two measurements were taken on the same day by the same technician with the HDI/Pulsewave CR-2000 System on each of a subset of participants selected randomly from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. Large and small artery elasticities (C1 and C2), C1 and C2 each multiplied by systemic vascular resistance (C1xR and C2xR, which are functions of the radial artery pulse waveform only), and systolic and diastolic blood…

Application of percolation model to the tensile strength and the reduced modulus of elasticity of three compacted pharmaceutical excipients.

Percolation theory has been applied to several mechanical properties of pharmaceutical tablets. This power law describes the change of tablet's properties with the relative density. It defines critical tablet densities from which the mechanical properties start to change. The exponent in the law is expected to be universal for a mechanical property and numerical values are proposed in the literature. In this work, the percolation model was applied to the tensile strength and the reduced modulus of elasticity (obtained from surface indentation test) of three compacted pharmaceutical excipients …

Nudged elastic membranes for constructing reduced two-dimensional potential energy surfaces.

Minimum-energy paths and intrinsic reaction coordinates are central tools for analyzing chemical reactions. As one-dimensional objects, however, individual paths do not provide a continuous representation of the surrounding potential energy surface (PES), including the arrangement of adjacent valleys, ridges, and higher-order saddle regions. We introduce the nudged elastic membrane method, which constructs a two-dimensional reduced PES in a selected region of configuration space using energies and forces, without requiring Hessian evaluations. The method is demonstrated for a three-dimensional

Structural, physical, and elastic properties of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles doped on borate glasses.

This study investigates the influence of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) on the optical, elastic, structural, and physical properties of borate glasses synthesized via the melt-quenching technique. The glass system investigated has the molar composition (68-x) B2O3-20CaO-2P2O5-10Na2O-xα-Fe2O3 (x = 0, 0.5, 1, and 2 mol%). Structural analysis using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) confirmed the amorphous nature of all glass sample’s. Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed the presence of structural units containing both three-coordinate (BO3) and four-coordinate (BO4) boron atoms within the

Elastic parametric response mapping: quantitative CT scoring for local COPD severity.

BACKGROUND: Current quantitative chest CT techniques improve chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) phenotyping but do not capture spatial variability and potentially reversible disease in local lung parenchyma. METHODS: Applying elastic principal graphing to CT scans from Genetic Epidemiology of COPD study participants (age 45-80 years; ≥10 pack-years), we developed elastic parametric response mapping (ePRM), a tiered scoring system (tiers 0-3 and tier Op, ie, lung opacities) that classifies lung subvolumes based on their relative composition of normal lung, emphysema, small airways di

Mechanical Characterization of Intermaxillary Orthodontic Elastics: Energy-Based Metrics and Clinical Guidance.

Background: Intermaxillary elastics are widely used in orthodontics to deliver controlled forces for malocclusion correction, aiding in the correction of anteroposterior, vertical, or transverse problems. Despite their clinical relevance, comprehensive mechanical characterization remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the mechanical properties of nine types of intermaxillary elastics available on the market to guide evidence-based clinical selection. Methods: Elastics were tested under uniaxial tensile loading following ISO 37:2011 and ISO 21606:2007, with six replicates per

Adaptive elastic convolution-based YOLO for peripheral blood smear cell detection.

Peripheral blood smear analysis continues to be important for the diagnosis of various hematologic conditions, although automated systems often experience difficulties due to the variety of cell types and the multi-class detection requirements associated with them. In this work, we propose Elastic YOLO (EYOLO), an extension of the You Only Look Once (YOLO) object detection framework designed for morphology-aware detection of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in peripheral blood smear images. In a dataset annotated by clinicians, Elastic YOLO achieved a mAP@0.5 of 94.7% and mAP@

Unsupervised Feature Selection via Self-Supervised HSIC and Elastic Net Regularization.

Unsupervised feature selection is essential for high-dimensional data analysis, where irrelevant and redundant variables may obscure the intrinsic data structure, reduce interpretability, and degrade downstream learning performance. The key challenge is to identify informative features without label supervision while suppressing redundant selections under nonlinear dependencies. To address this issue, this paper proposes an unsupervised Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC)-Elastic Net (ENet) feature selection framework, termed U-HSIC-ENet. The proposed method reformulates unlabeled fe

Non-elastic membrane dual-actuation liquid lens for continuous focus and zoom.

Miniaturization is crucial for technological advancement and innovation. Simplifying systems, reducing device size, and integrating multiple functions remain limiting factors for the miniaturization of optical imaging systems. Liquid lenses offer compact structure, fast response, and no mechanical parts, demonstrating potential for miniaturized imaging and rapid focusing. However, existing designs focus primarily on single-focus function, failing to simultaneously achieve fast continuous focusing, zoom capability, and reliable sealing in practical applications. This has resulted in limitations

Multiscale Prediction of Equivalent Elastic Properties of Carbon/Glass Hybrid Composite Laminates.

A multi-scale framework is proposed for predicting the equivalent engineering elastic constants of carbon/glass hybrid composite laminates with different fiber volume fractions Vf by integrating multiscale finite element homogenization with analytical micromechanics. Biaxial carbon fiber fabric reinforced vinyl ester composites are used as the target material system, and representative volume element (RVE) models are constructed sequentially at the lamina, laminate, and hybrid-laminate scales. At the lamina scale, the analytical self-consistent field micromechanics (SCFM) approach and the RVE

Elastic Ventilatory Energy Predicts ARDS Severity and Mortality: A Bayesian Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical power integrates the energy delivered to the respiratory system during mechanical ventilation but may not reflect the mechanical stress applied to lung tissue. Metrics focused on the elastic component of ventilatory energy may provide a more physiologically relevant estimate of parenchymal stress. We evaluated elastic static power and elastic static power normalized to predicted body weight (PBW) and their association with ARDS severity and mortalityMethods:We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study in an ICU, analyzed using Bayesian modeling. From Brittle to Elastic: Substituent Effects on Mechanical Flexibility in Aromatic Amide Crystals.

Mechanical flexibility in molecular crystalline materials represents a compelling paradigm shift from the long-held perception of crystals as inherently brittle solids. Herein, we demonstrate a brittle-to-elastic transition by subtle molecular modification in a pair of structurally analogous aromatic amides; N-[(4-methoxyphenyl)methyl]formamide (N4MFA, Crystal 1) and N-benzylformamide (NBFA, Crystal 2). Despite their close structural similarity, Crystal 1 exhibits brittle fracture under minimal stress, whereas Crystal 2 shows 1D elastic flexibility with reversible bending. Structural, computat

A Persistent Misconception About Hip Rotation Torques During Elastic Band Sidestepping.

Resisted sidestepping is widely implemented in rehabilitation and strength training, and exercise prescription is often guided by recommendations based on surface electromyography (EMG) patterns and intuitive assumptions about how elastic-band placement and posture influence hip loading. EMG provides valuable insight into neuromuscular strategies, but it does not, by itself, specify the direction or magnitude of joint-level mechanical demand. In this opinion article, we argue that exercise prescription is strengthened when EMG findings are interpreted within a joint-kinetic framework, in which
