[Biomechanical effect of anteromedial coronoid facet fracture and lateral collateral ligament complex injury on posteromedial rotational stability of elbow].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of anteromedial coronoid facet fracture and lateral collateral ligament complex (LCLC) injury on the posteromedial rotational stability of the elbow joint. METHODS: The double elbows were obtained from 4 fresh adult male cadaveric specimens. Complete elbow joint (group A, n=8), simple LCLC injury (group B, n=4), simple anteromedial coronoid facet fracture (group C, n=4), and LCLC injury combined with anteromedial coronoid facet fracture (group D, n=8). The torque value was calculated according to the load-displacement curve. RESULTS: There was no complete…

Treatment of Chronic Simple Elbow Dislocation by Two Separate Incisions - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic elbow dislocation is a highly disabling condition to be treated and to provide a successful functional outcome. Surgical treatment of such conditions might result in persisting instability or stiffness of the elbow joint due to associated shortening and contracture of the soft tissues and articular incongruity. Most of the described open reduction techniques are through an extensile posterior approach which might result in increased post-operative stiffness. We report the treatment of such a case with separate medial and lateral incisions with the excellent functional out…

Imaging overuse injury of the elbow in professional team handball players: a bilateral comparison using plain films, stress radiography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging.

The purpose of this study was to compare the manifestations of elbow stress due to repetitive valgus forces between the dominant and the non-dominant elbow in 40 uninjured elite team handball players using plain films, stress radiographs, ultrasound, and MRI examination. On comparative plain films generalized bony hypertrophy manifested by increased humeral diameter, and cortical hypertrophy of the humeral shaft of the dominant extremity was observed in all players. A significantly greater difference in medial joint space opening between stressed and unstressed elbows was measured in the domin

Use of continuous passive slow motion in the postoperative rehabilitation of difficult pediatric knee and elbow problems.

Continuous passive slow motion (CPSM) was used to aid postoperative rehabilitation in seven difficult pediatric knee and elbow problems. Four patients had joint erosion secondary to hemophilic arthropathy and three patients had joint irregularities associated with long-standing limitation of joint movement. CPSM was started soon after surgery at the slow speed of 1 revolution every 12.5 min. The early, slow mobilization did not cause pain and established an arc of joint motion before intraarticular adhesions became a problem. Compared with a similar group not using CPSM, our hemophilia patient

Overuse and traumatic injuries of the elbow.

MR imaging is a useful modality for evaluating athletes presenting with elbow pain. Osteochondral injuries and ligamentous injuries are well … g is to exclude an underlying space-occupying lesion. This article reviews the basic anatomy of the elbow joint and discusses the common osteochondral injuries, ligamentous injuries, instability syndromes, and tendinous pathologies at the elbow joint. The role of imaging in compressive neuropathies is briefly discussed.

CT attenuation of the medial coronoid process is reduced in dogs with medial coronoid disease but independent of arthroscopic disease severity.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the attenuation of the medial coronoid process (MCP) in dogs with and without arthroscopically confirmed evidence of medial coronoid disease (MCD). ANIMALS: The database at our institution was searched for cases with thoracic limb lameness, diagnosed with MCD by arthroscopic examination that had CT as part of their investigation and compared with a control group of elbow joints from cadavers euthanized for reasons unrelated to MCD. A total of 84 elbow joints were included that met these criteria. PROCEDURES: Following CT, a standardized measurement of the MCP was obtain…

Optimal Radial Head Prosthesis Sizing in Elbow Trauma: A Review of Anatomical Principles and Clinical Techniques.

» This review synthesizes current evidence and techniques for optimal spherical radial head arthroplasty, focusing on the importance of accurate prosthesis sizing to ensure a successful outcome. » Replication of the native radial head's diameter and height is important. Mismatch can lead to pain, stiffness, capitellar wear, altered joint kinematics, and accelerated arthritis. » For diameter, the minimal outer diameter of the reconstructed native head is the most reliable guide. If comminution prevents this, the capitellar width on computed tomography scans provides a strong correlative measure

Complex mammary carcinoma with metastases to lymph nodes, subcutaneous tissue, and multiple joints in a dog.

An 8-year-old, intact female, mixed-breed dog presented to the Oklahoma State University Boren Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for evaluation of progressive lameness and joint effusion of multiple joints. Physical examination revealed joint effusion of the elbow, hock, and stifle joints bilaterally, enlarged left axillary and right popliteal lymph nodes, a subcutaneous mass over the left elbow, and a subcutaneous mass involving the left second and third mammary glands. Cytologic examination of the mammary mass, enlarged lymph nodes, and joint fluid from most affected joints revealed a mon

Revision Total Elbow Arthroplasty.

Despite recent technologic advances, total elbow arthroplasty has complication rates higher than that of total joint arthroplasty in other joints. With new antirheumatic treatments, the population receiving total elbow arthroplasty has shifted from patients with rheumatoid arthritis to those with posttraumatic arthritis, further compounding the high complication rate. The most common reasons for revision include infection, aseptic loosening, fracture, and component failure. Common mechanisms of total elbow arthroplasty failure include infection, aseptic loosening, fracture, component failure,

Latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous free flap transplantation to salvage below-elbow amputation in an emergency operation: a case report.

We used a free latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap (LD m-c flap) to cover a large skin defect at the stump of a forearm in an emergency operation. The patient we discuss is a 52-year-old man. Amputation at the distal one third of the left forearm occurred after catching his hand and wrist in a machine. The amputated left hand was severely damaged and there were wide skin defects. The function of the elbow joint was well preserved. Both the radius and ulna were cut 7 cm distal from the elbow joint. A 20 x 8 cm square of LD m-c flap was transplanted, to the stump of the forearm. The flap surv…

Skeletal abnormalities in the Apert syndrome.

This paper reports on skeletal abnormalities in 38 patients with Apert syndrome. Analysis includes alterations in the shoulders, humeri, elbows, hips, knees, rib cage, and spine (except the cervical spine). Some patients had subacromial dimples and elbow dimples during infancy. Mobility at the glenohumeral joint was limited. Progressive limitation in abduction, forward flexion, and external rotation with growth was virtually a constant finding. The acromioclavicular joint was prominent and sometimes had an angular, pointed appearance clinically. This was often associated with atrophic musculat

MR Imaging of the Elbow.

Almost all movements of the upper extremities during routine daily life and many athletic activities require a painless and stable elbow joint. Studying the elbow is a diagnostic challenge because of its complex anatomy. MR imaging is an extremely important tool in the evaluation of common elbow disorders, the spectrum of which ranges from obvious acute lesions to chronic overuse injuries whose imaging manifestations can be subtle.
