[Study of the transversal repartition of the electrical field of paroxysmal discharges in petite mal epilepsies (author's transl)].

A precise analysis of the topography of the EEG critical discharges of Petit Mal, permits a description of two principal varieties, depending whether their electrical field presents two lateral and symmetrical peaks--usually on frontal areas--('lateral variety') or one peak on the mediosagittal line ('medial variety') of the scalp. The relationship which exists between the lateral distribution of EEG discharges and the 'simple' aspect of the absences, on the one hand, and the medial distribution with the 'complex' aspect, on the other, is so close that one is led to hypothesize two distinct ep

The sodium channel and intracellular H+ blockage in squid axons.

Sodium channels in plasma membranes can be blocked by a large variety of toxins and local anaesthetics. This property, however, is not confined to relatively large molecules. For instance, extracellularly applied small ions like hydrogen may also prevent the passive transport of permeant cations across open Na+ channels. A typical feature of this phenomenon is that the blocking action of hydrogen is gradually relieved by increasing the voltage applied across the membrane. Although in the frog skeletal muscle there is no clear evidence for a similar intracellular action, we report here for the

[Report on clinical positive evidence of the nerve excitability test in facial palsy (author's transl)].

Comparative studies of case controls of Bell's palsy, posttraumatic and postoperative palsies in relation to the clinical positive evidence of the nerve excitability test are demonstrated. While an absolutely parallel reaction of clinical function restitution and electrical excitability is observed in Bell's palsy and in posttraumatic late palsy, on the other hand this congruence will not be observed in postoperative palsies (in intact anatomical conduction of the nerve) in most of the investigated cases. In these cases the clinical restitution of isolated movements of the mimetic muscles has

An intact globe technique for electrophysiological studies on cornea.

An intact globe method was developed to determine the characteristics of the cornea of the bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana. With this method the anterior chamber could be perfused and the transcorneal potential difference (PD) and electrical resistance determined. It was found for the endothelium plus stroma (epithelium scraped) that the PD was essentially zero and the electrical resistance was only a small fraction of that of the intact cornea. Elevation of K+ or decrease in Cl- concentration in the anterior chamber produced in intact corneas a large and rapid change in PD while with the epitheliu

Intracellular recording from cat spinal motoneurones during acute asphyxia.

1. Changes in membrane and action potentials of cat spinal motoneurones during acute asphyxiation and re-oxygenation were recorded with an intracellular technique.2. The asphyxial potential of the grey matter, which develops in the first 2-2.5 min of asphyxiation, can be expected to interfere with the membrane potential record. After correcting for this effect a gradual depolarization of the soma at a rate of 3-4 mV/min was found, commencing within a fraction of a minute after the start of asphyxiation.3. The orthodromic responses of the motoneurones were the most vulnerable to O(2) lack. They

The Biomimetic Electrical Stimulation System Inducing Osteogenic Differentiations of BMSCs.

Electrical stimulation has been used clinically as an adjunct therapy to accelerate the healing of bone defects, and its mechanism requires further investigations. The complexity of the physiological microenvironment makes it challenging to study the effect of electrical signal on cells alone. Therefore, an artificial system mimicking cell microenvironment in vitro was developed to address this issue. In this work, a novel electrical stimulation system was constructed based on polypyrrole nanowires (ppyNWs) with a high aspect ratio. Synthesized ppyNWs formed a conductive network in the composi

Implantable stimulator for selective stimulation of the common peroneal nerve: a preliminary report.

We present details of the modelling, design, and experimental testing of an implantable system with a monopolar half-cuff electrode for selective stimulation of fibres within certain superficial regions of the human common peroneal nerve which is capable of making a selective activation of muscles, thus contributing to strong dorsal flexion and moderate eversion of the hemiplegic foot. The development of the cuff electrode was based partly on data obtained from histological examination of human common peroneal nerves, and from previously described models of excitation of myelinated nerve fibre

Determinants of electrical propagation and propagation block in Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy.

Gap junction and ion channel remodeling occur early in Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy (ACM), but their pathogenic consequences have not been elucidated. Here, we identified the arrhythmogenic substrate, consisting of propagation slowing and conduction block, in ACM models expressing two different desmosomal gene variants. Neonatal rat ventricular myocytes were transduced to express variants in genes encoding desmosomal proteins plakoglobin or plakophilin-2. Studies were performed in engineered cells and anisotropic tissues to quantify changes in conduction velocity, formation of unidirectional

Unique action of sodium tanshinone II-A sulfonate (DS-201) on the Ca(2+) dependent BK(Ca) activation in mouse cerebral arterial smooth muscle cells.

Sodium tanshinone II-A sulfonate (DS-201) is a water-soluble derivative of tanshinone IIA, a main active constituent of Salvia miltiorrhiza which has been used for treatments of cardio- and cerebro-vascular diseases. DS-201 activates large conductance Ca(2+)-sensitive K(+) channels (BK(Ca)) in arterial smooth muscle cells, and reduces the vascular tone. Here we investigated the effect of DS-201 on the BK(Ca) channel kinetics by analyzing single channel currents. Smooth muscle cells were freshly isolated from mouse cerebral arteries. Single channel currents of BK(Ca) were recorded by patch clam

Acute effects of spinal transection on EPSPs produced by single homonymous Ia-fibers in soleus alpha-motoneurons in the cat.

1. Excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) generated in soleus motoneurons by single homonymous Ia-fibers were measured using intracellular recording and the spike-triggered averaging technique. Two groups of barbiturate-anesthetized adult cats were studied: one with the spinal cord intact and the other with the spinal cord severed at thoracic segment 13 (T13) several hours prior to recording. 2. In cord-transected cats, single homonymous Ia-fibers produced EPSPs in soleus motoneurons that were, on average, larger and faster rising relative to normal, as they are for those produced in media

Self-Growing Conductive Hydrogels Establish Volumetric Biointerfaces for Cardiac Conduction Restoration.

Restoring three-dimensional electrical conduction in infarcted myocardium remains a critical challenge, as conventional conductive hydrogel patches largely remain surface-confined and prevent electrical coupling of residual cardiomyocytes within fibrotic scars. Here, we present a self-growing conductive volumetric interface (SCOVE) that transforms surface-confined biointerfaces into tissue-integrated, three-dimensional conductive networks. SCOVE is delivered as an injectable hydrogel precursor containing the tissue-permeable conductive monomer 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-acetic acid sodium salt

Inner ear damage following electric current and lightning injury: a literature review.

Audiovestibular sequelae of electrical injury, due to lightning or electric current, are probably much more common than indicated in literature. The aim of the study was to review the impact of electrical injury on the cochleovestibular system. Studies were identified through Medline, Embase, CINAHL and eMedicine databases. Medical Subject Headings used were 'electrical injury', 'lightning', 'deafness' and 'vertigo'. All prospective and retrospective studies, case series and case reports of patients with cochlear or vestibular damage due to lightning or electrical current injury were included.

Optimizing the electrical excitation of an atmospheric pressure plasma advanced oxidation process.

The impact of pulse-modulated generation of atmospheric pressure plasma on the efficiency of organic dye degradation has been investigated. Aqueous samples of methyl orange were exposed to low temperature air plasma and the degradation efficiency was determined by absorbance spectroscopy. The plasma was driven at a constant frequency of 35kHz with a duty cycle of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. Relative concentrations of dissolved nitrogen oxides, pH, conductivity and the time evolution of gas phase ozone were measured to identify key parameters responsible for the changes observed in degradation effi

Development of cesium phosphotungstate salt and chitosan composite membrane for direct methanol fuel cells.

A novel composite membrane has been developed by doping cesium phosphotungstate salt (CsxH3-xPW12O40 (0≤x≤3), Csx-PTA) into chitosan (CTS/Csx-PTA) for application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Uniform distribution of Csx-PTA nanoparticles has been achieved in the chitosan matrix. The proton conductivity of the composite membrane is significantly affected by the Csx-PTA content in the composite membrane as well as the Cs substitution in PTA. The highest proton conductivity for the CTS/Csx-PTA membranes was obtained with x=2 and Cs2-PTA content of 5 wt%. The value is 6×10(-3) S cm(-1) a

Synthesis and photovoltaic property of fine and uniform Zn2SnO4 nanoparticles.

Zn(2)SnO(4) nanoparticles (NPs) with a narrow size distribution were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal route by controlling the crystallization process. The average size of NPs was 8 nm, and this was attributed to the formation of a hydroxy carbonate compound as an intermediate phase, which was demonstrated by the structural and elemental analyses. The fine size and visible-transparency of the synthesized NPs enabled the fabrication of transparent films for efficient photoelectrochemical devices. In particular, we demonstrated dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) employing these transparent Z

The effect of subacute denervation on the electrical anisotropy of skeletal muscle: implications for clinical diagnostic testing.

OBJECTIVE: Applied electrical current flows preferentially along rather than across muscle fibers, a characteristic called anisotropy. In this study, we investigate the alteration in muscle anisotropy after denervation. METHODS: Eight adult male rats underwent sciatic nerve crush and the gastrocnemius was harvested from 1 to 2.5 weeks later. Muscle from 12 additional healthy rats was also obtained. Multifrequency electrical impedance measurements were made on the tissue and its conductivity and relative permittivity (i.e., its polarizability) calculated. Anisotropy of the tissue was determine
