Electrical Burn and Amputations in a Burn Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries are a global public health problem and continue to be one of the leading causes of unintentional death and injury. Electrical injuries, a relatively rare cause of burns, are increasingly being reported with higher rates of mortality in low and middle-income countries due to rapid industrialization in the absence of safety regulations. Electrical burn injuries can result in death, various organ system dysfunctions, or limb amputations. METHODS: A 5-year retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the rate of amputation and associated risk factors in e

Unveiling the Surge: A Comprehensive Analysis of E-Scooter-Related Injuries at an Urban Level 1 Trauma Center in Vilnius, Lithuania (2018-2021).

Background The surge in electric scooter (e-scooter) adoption in 2019 fueled by sharing platforms has raised safety concerns, leading to an increased incidence of e-scooter-related injuries. Despite regulatory efforts, there has been a notable rise in accidents, prompting a comprehensive investigation. This study conducted at the Republican Vilnius University Hospital (RVUH), a level 1 trauma center, is one of the first in the Baltic States aiming to analyze the causes, severity, and frequency of e-scooter injuries from 2018 to 2021. This research addresses a critical gap in understanding e-sc

Head and Neck Injuries among Powered Scooter Users between 2010 and 2019.

Powered scooters, including electric scooters (e-scooters), have become an increasingly available and popular mode of personal transportation, but the health risks of these devices are poorly explored. We aim to quantify the increase in frequency of powered scooter-associated head and neck region injuries occurring yearly from 2010 to 2019, and to compare the frequency and severity of injury with those involving unpowered scooters. Here we present a retrospective cross-sectional study of all patients with head and neck injuries associated with powered and unpowered scooters seen in emergency d

[Mutagenic effects of direct electric current].

Mutagenic effect of direct electric current on sprouts of Vicia faba L. was detected. The effect manifested itself in increase in percentage of cells with chromosome aberrations in root meristem. The most considerable injuries are observed when root meristem contacts with the positive electrode during current passing. Typical peculiarity of mutagenic effect of current is appearance of dicentrics which exceed the control value 4 times. By the end of the first mitotic cycle, gradual reduction of percentage of injured cells, reaching the control value, is observed.

Physiotherapeutic Rehabilitation of a Patient Following an Electrical Burn: A Case Report.

Electrical burn is one of the common burn injuries occurring nowadays due to the increase in the use of technology; among others, electricians are more prone to electrical burn injury as they work all day to make and repair electrical equipment and systems. In this case report, we are presenting such a scenario. The patient, a 36-year-old male, was brought to casualty with an injury by a flash of electricity while working. The patient sustained a burn on the right hand and presented with burn injury over the right hand and forearm with bleb over the anterior aspect of the wrist joint, skin dis

Six cases of collective lightning-induced arc explosion injuries: A case report.

Currently, clinical studies on lightning injuries are mostly limited to single-patient cases, and there is still limited understanding of the mechanisms and clinical features of injuries that occur simultaneously among multiple individuals in a localized area. This article reports the environmental conditions, injuries, and treatment of six patients who suffered from arc explosion injuries caused by lightning within a 200-m radius. The incident occurred in late June on a rainy day at a coastal location (approximately 680 m elevation). Six patients were simultaneously injured by a lightning-ind

Increased injury severity and hospitalization rates following crashes with e-bikes versus conventional bicycles: an observational cohort study from a regional level II trauma center in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: As electric bicycles (e-bikes) become increasingly popular, reports of injuries associated with e-bike usage are also rising. Patterns, characteristics, and severity of injuries following e-bike crashes need further investigation, particularly in contrast to injuries from conventional bicycle crashes. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 82 patients treated at a Level II trauma center for injuries resulting from an electric or conventional bicycle crash. Data were collected over one year (05.09.2017-19.09.2018) during in- and outpatient visits. A study-specific c

Penetrating brain injury by drill bit.

Non-missile low velocity penetrating brain injuries are unusual among civilian population. They show specific characteristics different from missile wounds. In this paper we describe a rare case of self-inflicted penetrating head trauma by electric drill. We document neuroimaging studies and review the management concerning this pathology. To our knowledge, this is the first case of intracranial retained drill bit with such radiological findings reported in the literature. An 80-year-old male with no previous psychiatric disorder presented at our hospital after suffering an accident while work

Defining the Indications of Pedicled Groin and Abdominal Flaps in Hand Reconstruction in the Current Microsurgery Era.

Three decades ago, pedicled flaps from the groin and abdomen were the workhorses in hand and forearm reconstruction. These pedicled flaps have several disadvantages including patient discomfort, stiffness, the need for flap division, and the inability to elevate the hand after acute trauma. Hence it is not surprising that free flap reconstruction has become the method of choice in coverage of complex hand and forearm defects. Despite this, pedicled flaps may still be indicated in the current era of microsurgery. Based on a review of the literature and the author's experience, the current revie

[Effect of polypeptides from scorpion venom on morpho-functional changes of the incubated Mauthner neurons in goldfish].

Using the electron microscopical method of negative staining it was shown that one of the fractions obtained from scorpion venom directly interacts with monomeric chromatographically pure actin causing its polymerization and transformation from globular into fibrillar form. The effect of long-term orthodromic stimulation on evoked electric activity and on the ultrastructure of Mauthner neurons (MN) in the goldfish hindbrain slices incubated in vitro was studied after the application of this venom fraction. The peptides of this fraction were shown to stabilize the amplitude of MN evoked electri

Controlled brain hypothermia by extracorporeal carotid blood cooling at normothermic trunk temperatures in pigs.

Cerebral hypothermia improves outcomes after brain injury. A technique is presented for isolated brain cooling in pigs by cooling the natural blood supply of the brain. Under general anesthesia both common carotid arteries were exteriorized. One proximal carotid artery was connected to both distal carotid arteries and a heat exchanger in this line controlled brain temperature. The second proximal carotid artery was connected to an external jugular vein and a heat exchanger in this arteriovenous shunt was used to clamp trunk temperature. Thalamic brain temperatures of anesthetized juvenile pigs

High-voltage electrocution-induced pulmonary injury and cerebellar hemorrhage with fractures in atlas.

BACKGROUND: Electrocution is a common cause of mild to severe multisystem injuries leading to high rate of mortality and morbidity. Low to high-voltage injury may be clinically manifested from a simple unpleasant sensation to multiple soft tissue injury which may cause instant death. The severity of injury depends on intensity of the electrical current, voltage of the source, resistance in the victims' body and the duration of the contact. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old young male experienced with an accidental high-voltage electrocution injury from a blasted electrical transformer while pa

Analysis of electric scooter user kinematics after a crash against SUV.

The article presents the results of the analysis of electric scooter user kinematics after a crash against a vehicle. The share of electric scooters (e-scooters) in urban traffic has been growing in recent years. The number of road accidents involving e-scooters is also increasing. However, the safety situation of electric scooter users is insufficiently researched in terms of kinematics and injury outcomes. The article presents the importance of this problem based on an in-depth literature analysis of e-scooter-related types of accidents, injuries percentages, and helmet use. Subsequently, fo

Severe hypokalemia as a cause of acute transient paraplegia following electrical shock.

Transient lower extremity paralysis has been previously reported following high voltage electrical injury. The following case report describes an unusual presentation of transient acute flaccid lower extremity paralysis following a high voltage electrical injury associated with profound hypokalemia and acid/base abnormalities similar to the periodic paralysis syndrome. The patient's symptoms resolved with correction of severe hypokalemia. Potential mechanisms for a metabolic neuromuscular disorder induced by electrical injury are proposed.

Pediatric Lunate Fracture Treated With Percutaneous Screw Fixation.

Pediatric lunate fractures are exceedingly rare, with limited evidence to guide management. We present the case of a 12-year-old boy who sustained bilateral wrist injuries with a displaced right lunate fracture after an electric bicycle fall. The fracture was reduced and fixed percutaneously with a headless compression screw. At 8 months, radiographs confirmed union and the patient had full, pain free wrist motion without evidence of osteonecrosis or instability. We propose that percutaneous compression screw fixation is a reasonable option for achieving reliable union in older pediatric patie

Epidemiology of Paediatric Injuries Related to Scooter Use in 2020.

AIM: Powered, or electric, scooters (e-scooters) have recently increased in popularity, resulting in more e-scooter-related trauma. Paediatric e-scooter injuries are of particular concern. Motorised scooter injuries are logged in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). There are specific codes for powered versus unpowered scooters, allowing for differentiation of scooter-related injuries. Our primary objective was to describe e-scooter injury epidemiology for the year 2020 amongst e-scooter riders to best inform medical providers and public health officials of the most comm
