Rett syndrome is a clinical entity with a distinct set of signs and symptoms. Its etiology is unknown. We review here our observations in this disorder based upon clinical and polysomnographic examinations which are consistent with a developmental disorder of the monoaminergic neural system. These studies argue for a disorder of the noradrenergic, serotonergic and dopaminergic system arising in the locus ceruleus, raphe nuclei and substantia nigra, respectively. In a series of 61 patients with the morphologic and histochemical features of mitochondrial myopathy, 22 (36%) had pigmentary retinopathy. Three patterns of retinopathy were identified. Eighteen patients had a "salt and pepper" type of retinal appearance, which was usually associated with good visual function. Two had many features of retinitis pigmentosa, and two others showed generalized loss, or atrophy, of the retinal pigment epithelium and choriocapillaris. The early posterior negativity (EPN) reflects early selective visual processing of emotionally significant information. This study explored the association between fear of spiders and the EPN for spider pictures. Fifty women completed a Spider Phobia Questionnaire and watched the random rapid serial presentation of 600 neutral, 600 negatively valenced emotional, and 600 spider pictures (three pictures per second). PURPOSE: To investigate the nystagmus of twin brothers presenting with spasmus nutans later diagnosed as Bardet-Biedl syndrome.
METHODS: The twins presented at the age of 14 months with a presumed diagnosis of spasmus nutans. They were followed clinically and with quantitative electro-oculographic eye movement recordings until the age of 6 years.
RESULTS: Polydactyly, truncal obesity, mild delay in cognitive development, visual acuity of 20/100, attenuated retinal vessels and pale disks, and bilaterally almost extinguished scotopic and photopic electroretinograms were found in both brothers.

We report EEG findings in 15 presenile Alzheimer patients (probable Alzheimer's disease according to NINCDS-ADRDA criteria) and 15 age-matched controls. The quantitative EEG was analysed with respect to absolute power for each frequency band at each location accounting for EOG and EMG artifacts respectively. Analysis of human horizontal saccadic eye movements can provide measurements of central nervous system depression and stimulation. Effects on saccadic eye movements have been observed in normal volunteers with barbiturates, benzodiazepines, opiates and related compounds, carbamazepine, amphetamine and ethanol. A suite of programmes have been developed to allow the generation, collection and analysis of saccadic eye movements using a CBM 3032, 8032 or BBC B microcomputer. The system allows almost continuous sampling and rapid analysis of movements.

Fifteen patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) were examined by simultaneous electro-oculography of each eye. In 11 patients the INO was bilateral and in 4 patients unilateral. In three male patients with Alport's disease, two of them successfully treated by kidney transplantation, ophthalmoscopy revealed bilaterally densely packed whitish-yellow lesions around, and to some extent in, the macular area. These spots, superficially located in the retina, have not been previosly desribed in Alport's disease.
