[Raoul Palmer and the coelio-surgical adventure from 1940 to 1995].

Raoul Palmer born in Paris in 1904 from Swedish parents with a humanistic tradition and a non-conformist spirit obtained a scientific degree (licence ès-sciences) before starting his medical studies. Attracted by experimental surgery he was at the head of Fiessinger's laboratory before becoming demonstrator of gynecology at the Hôpital Broca in the services of Proust, Brocq, Macquot, Funck-Brentano and Huguier. As a surgeon specialized in sterility since 1935 but conscient as to the difficulty of making a prognosis without being informed of the extent of the lesions, he invented pre-operatory

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection.

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is a congenital heart defect in which there is no connection between the pulmonary veins and the left atrium. An anomalous connection is established that allows the pulmonary veins to deliver pulmonary venous blood to the right side of the heart rather than to the left side. A patent foramen ovale or an atrial septal defect develops in utero, allowing a right-to-left shunting of blood without which the infant would die. This article describes normal embryology, abnormal embryology that results in TAPVC, types of anomalous connections, how TAP…

Ear malformations: what do radiologists need to know?

Ear malformations represent 50% of ear, nose and throat malformations. Ear malformations cause conductive hearing loss (CHL) and/or sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) with a significant childhood disability worldwide. Early accurate diagnosis and treatment are mandatory to enhance language and speech development. Understanding the embryology of the ear explains the outcome of ototoxic prenatal insult according to the affected gestational age and the incidence of association among inner, middle, and external ear malformations. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examina…

Instrumentation of Near-term Fetal Sheep for Multivariate Chronic Non-anesthetized Recordings.

The chronically instrumented pregnant sheep has been used as a model of human fetal development and responses to pathophysiologic stimuli such as endotoxins, bacteria, umbilical cord occlusions, hypoxia and various pharmacological treatments. The life-saving clinical practices of glucocorticoid treatment in fetuses at risk of premature birth and the therapeutic hypothermia have been developed in this model. This is due to the unique amenability of the non-anesthetized fetal sheep to the surgical placement and maintenance of catheters and electrodes, allowing repetitive blood sampling, substanc

[The founding of the chair of comparative embryogeny at the Collège de France (1844)].

The first chair of embryology was founded in 1844 at the College de France. Yet the founding met with hostility. The first occupant Victor Coste (1807-1873) was imposed on the institution. The administrator-professors of the College de France criticized the governmental procedure. Some professors, such as Georges-Louis Duvernoy, made a stand against the appointment of the young embryologist. Duvenoy continued for several years to protest against Coste's teachings at the College of France. But Coste was tacked by De Blainville and eventually Flourens. Credit should be given to Coste for having …

Case report: An unusual arrival of a hydrocoele.

Acute hydrocoele is a previously unreported complication of herniography that may be explained on the basis of inguinal-scrotal embryology.

[History of classification systems of conjoined twins by specific consideration of the classification systems of Louis Bolk (1866-1930)].

Classification systems concerning conjoined twins have been developed in the nineteenth century by many authors, a.o. J. F. Meckel (1816), I … twins the Vrolik Collection and many other specimens of the Museum of the Department of Anatomy and Embryology of the University of Amsterdam were very important for Bolk. Three factors were the main reason that the concept of the classification of double monsters of Bolk has not been cited often in the international literature: 1 greater than the publicatio …

The trophoblast theory of cancer (John Beard, 1857-1924) revisited.

Beard's theory can be restated in a modified form in modern terms in the following way. Cancer represents primarily trophoblastic tissue derived either from an aberrant germ cell or from a somatic cell whose normally repressed 'asexual generation' genes are abnormally reactivated ('derepressed'). The variety of tumors, other than teratomas, may be due to a parallel chance derepression of some genes of somatic ('sexual gneration') characters. This would be a defensive reaction against intramural parasitization by trophoblast and would result in the differentiation and hyperplasia of normally pr

Anterior Cerebral Artery: Variant Anatomy and Pathology.

The anterior cerebral artery (ACA) contains anatomical variants that are closely related to its embryology and development. In this study, the authors reviewed the most commonly encountered variants of the ACA and anterior communicating artery. They also reviewed the embryological origins of these variants as well as a variety of associated pathologies. Several variants are described and highlighted with illustrations including: (1) the aberrant origin of the ACA from the internal carotid artery and its developmental association with the ophthalmic artery; (2) the persistent olfactory artery; …
