Longitudinal associations between negative symptoms and social functioning in schizophrenia: the moderating role of employment status and setting.

While research has demonstrated strong relationships between negative symptoms and social difficulties in schizophrenia, little is known about the possible role of employment status and setting in this relationship. Seventy-seven participants with a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder, who were either unemployed (n = 34), employed within a specialty mental health setting (n = 23), or employed within a community setting (n = 20) were assessed twice, six weeks apart, as to their negative symptoms and social functioning. Work in community settings generally predicted an increase in the l…

This paper investigated educational achievement, employment status, living situation, marital status and offspring in 500 Dutch long-term young adults survivors of childhood cancer (age range, 16-49 years, 47% female). The results were compared with a reference group of 1092 persons with no history of cancer (age range, 15-33 years, 55% female). The impact of demographic and medical characteristics on psychosocial adjustment was studied. All participants completed a self-report questionnaire. The results showed that, although many survivors are functioning well and leading normal lives, a subg…

Women's non-farm employment and household dietary quality in rural China: evidence from a national rural health perspective.

BACKGROUND: Improving dietary quality and reducing nutrition-related inequalities remain important public health challenges in rural populations. Women often play central roles in household food purchasing, meal preparation, and resource allocation, suggesting that women's employment transitions may be closely linked to household nutritional outcomes. This study examines the association between married women's non-farm employment and household dietary quality in rural China and explores potential pathways underlying this relationship. METHODS: Data were drawn from 1,723 rural households in th…

This study examines gender differences in self-perceived health and psychological distress among self-employed workers and employees in Barcelona, Spain, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study used data from the 2021 Barcelona Health Survey. We included a subsample of workers aged 25-64 years (892 men and 885 women). Employment status was classified into four categories: permanent employee, temporary employee, self-employed, or employer. Two health outcomes were analysed: self-perceived health and psychological distress. Gender-stratified analyses were performed. Unlike men, …

Who stays, who leaves? Transitions from part-time to full-time private-sector employment among physicians in Portugal.

BACKGROUND: The transition of physicians from part-time to full-time private sector employment has significant implications for healthcare workforce management, particularly in dual practice settings. Yet, such transitions remain underexplored in the literature. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the physician- and firm-level determinants associated with the transition from part-time to full-time private sector employment using employer-employee linked data from Portugal for the years 2010 to 2019. METHODS: We summarize the share of private-sector contracts that are part-time and use a panel log…

METHODS: The present work analyzed data from the 7th Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS), including 25,259 wage workers aged 20 years and older. Employment type was categorized …

Self-reported cognitive function mediates the relationship between employment status and cognitive functioning in persons with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment (CI) is common in people with MS (PwMS). Evidence is lacking for the self-reported CI's mediation effect on employment status and objective cognitive performance. Self-reported CI was found to be unreliable and seemed to be more associated with depression rather than formal cognitive performance. We hypothesized that the link between subjective and objective assessments of cognitive functions, mood, and employment status may be more complex in PwMS than previously reported. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study are the following: (Romero-Pinel et al., 2022) to det…

A 12-Week Electronic Mentoring Employment Preparation Intervention for Youth With Physical Disabilities: Pilot Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Youth with disabilities are at high risk of unemployment compared with youth without disabilities. They often encounter challenges in accessing vocational programs that meet their needs. One promising approach that could help to address barriers that youth encounter while also enhancing social support is through electronic mentoring (e-mentoring). Although there is an increase in e-mentoring for youth with disabilities, little is known about its impact for youth with physical disabilities. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the acceptability and initial impact of a Web-based pe…

When algorithms evaluate people: how AI video interviews relate to employability confidence and organizational attractiveness.

Algorithmic evaluation is increasingly entering high-stakes social contexts, including recruitment, where young people are assessed before any human interaction occurs. AI video interviews are one such setting; they are largely one-directional, opaque, and often provide no feedback about how applicants are evaluated. This study examines how such AI-mediated evaluation relates to two socially consequential perceptions among university students: confidence in their own employability and trust-related evaluations of organizations that deploy AI-based assessment. Drawing on Situated Expectancy-Val
