Isoacridone dyes with parallel reactivity from both singlet and triplet excited states for biphotonic catalysis and upconversion.

Metal-based photosensitizers commonly undergo quantitative intersystem crossing into photoactive triplet excited states. In contrast, organi … ently, the new isoacridone dyes are well suited for applications requiring parallel triplet-triplet energy transfer and photoinduced electron transfer elementary steps, which have become increasingly important in modern photocatalysis. In proof-of-principle experiments, the isoacridone dyes were employed for Birch-type arene reductions and C-C couplings via sensi …

Thermodynamic, kinetic, and computational study of heavier chalcogen (S, Se, and Te) terminal multiple bonds to molybdenum, carbon, and phosphorus.

Enthalpies of chalcogen atom transfer to Mo(N[t-Bu]Ar)3, where Ar = 3,5-C6H3Me2, and to IPr (defined as bis-(2,6-isopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) have been measured by solution calorimetry leading to bond energy estimates (kcal/mol) for EMo(N[t-Bu]Ar)3 (E = S, 115; Se, 87; Te, 64) and EIPr (E = S, 102; Se, 77; Te, 53). The enthalpy of S-atom transfer to PMo(N[ t-Bu]Ar) 3 generating SPMo(N[t-Bu]Ar)3 has been measured, yielding a value of only 78 kcal/mol. The kinetics of combination of Mo(N[t-Bu]Ar)3 with SMo(N[t-Bu]Ar)3 yielding (mu-S)[Mo(N[t-Bu]Ar)3]2 have been studied, and yield activatio

Computational and experimental studies on the catalytic mechanism of biliverdin-IXbeta reductase.

BVR-B (biliverdin-IXbeta reductase) also known as FR (flavin reductase) is a promiscuous enzyme catalysing the pyridine-nucleotide-dependent reduction of a variety of flavins, biliverdins, PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) and ferric ion. Mechanistically it is a good model for BVR-A (biliverdin-IXalpha reductase), a potential pharmacological target for neonatal jaundice and also a potential target for adjunct therapy to maintain protective levels of biliverdin-IXalpha during organ transplantation. In a commentary on the structure of BVR-B it was noted that one outstanding issue remained: whether

Elucidation of hydrolysis mechanisms for fatty acid amide hydrolase and its Lys142Ala variant via QM/MM simulations.

Fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) is a serine hydrolase that degrades anandamide, an endocannabinoid, and oleamide, a sleep-inducing lipid, and has potential applications as a therapeutic target for neurological disorders. Remarkably, FAAH hydrolyzes amides and esters with similar rates; however, the normal preference for esters reemerges when Lys142 is mutated to alanine. To elucidate the hydrolysis mechanisms and the causes behind this variation of selectivity, mixed quantum and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations were carried out to obtain free-energy profiles for alternative mechanism

Computational insights into the structural and electronic properties of first-row transition metal-doped In2O3 systems.

Indium oxide (In2O3) has emerged as a promising catalyst for CO2-to-methanol conversion, although its efficiency is limited by poor H2 activation. Inspired by recent findings that economical Co-doping enhances the catalytic performance of In2O3, this study employs density functional theory (DFT) to systematically investigate the structural and electronic properties of first-row 3d transition metals (TM = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) doped In2O3, aiming to guide rational catalyst design. The present analysis shows that the electronic configuration of the TM dopant plays a critical rol

Estimation of dissociation energy in donor-acceptor complex AuCl x PPh3 via topological analysis of the experimental electron density distribution function.

The high-resolution X-ray diffraction analysis and plane-wave density functional theory were applied to the investigation of charge density distribution in the donor-acceptor complex of AuCl with PPh3. The approach allows us to estimate the atomic charges, the charge transfer, the energy of weak interactions (Au...H, Au...C, H...Cl, etc.), and Au-P bond energy directly from the experimental data.

Hybrid Molecule-Nanocrystal Photon Upconversion Across the Visible and Near-Infrared.

The ability to upconvert two low energy photons into one high energy photon has potential applications in solar energy, biological imaging, and data storage. In this Letter, CdSe and PbSe semiconductor nanocrystals are combined with molecular emitters (diphenylanthracene and rubrene) to upconvert photons in both the visible and the near-infrared spectral regions. Absorption of low energy photons by the nanocrystals is followed by energy transfer to the molecular triplet states, which then undergo triplet-triplet annihilation to create high energy singlet states that emit upconverted light. By …

Tunable Charge Transfer in Europium Metal-Organic Frameworks for Ratiometric Sensing of a Sarin Simulant.

Precise regulation of ligand-to-Eu energy-transfer pathways and the antenna effect is essential for constructing robust ratiometric luminesc … protonation process; this reaction preserves the framework integrity yet attenuates ligand-to-Eu3+ energy transfer, thereby unleashing ligand-centered emission. These results establish a direct structure-energy-transfer-sensing relationship and provide a useful design principle for designing Ln-MOF-based ratiometric sensors for organophosphorus nerve-agent simul …

Immobilization of europium and terbium ions with tunable ratios on a dispersible two-dimensional metal-organic framework for ratiometric photoluminescence detection of D2O.

A two-dimensional zirconium-based metal-organic framework (2D Zr-MOF), ZrBTB (BTB = 1,3,5-tri(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene), is used as a platform to simultaneously immobilize terbium ions and europium ions with tunable ratios on its hexa-zirconium nodes by a post-synthetic modification. The crystallinity, morphology, porosity and photoluminescence (PL) properties of the obtained 2D Zr-MOFs with various europium-to-terbium ratios are investigated. With the energy transfer from the excited BTB linker to the installed terbium ions and the energy transfer from terbium ions to europium ions, a low load…

Unveil the mechanism of photosensitized fluoroquinolones enhancing chlortetracycline photodegradation under simulated sunlight: Batch experiments and DFT calculation.

Fluoroquinolones (FQs), as the most commonly used antibiotics, are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment. The FQs' self-sensitization proces … . Moreover, the higher triple-excited state energy of OFL and NOR over DFT calculation implied that energy transfer from 3OFL* or 3NOR* to CTC was also theoretically feasible. Therefore, the presence of FQs could significantly accelerate the photodegradation of coexisting antibiotics mainly via electron or energy transfer of 3FQs*. The present study provided a ne …

Anomalous Photoluminescence in Undoped and Mn2+-Doped 2D Hybrid Lead Halide Systems.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid lead halide systems have emerged as promising materials for optoelectronic applications due to their remarkable optical properties and enhanced moisture stability. However, photoluminescence (PL) from such 2D samples has been reported to vary substantially across different sample forms and experimental geometries, and the associated recombination dynamics are often inconsistently interpreted in the literature. The incorporation of Mn2+ dopant ions into these 2D systems further complicates the picture by introducing host-to-dopant energy-transfer pathways, highlighti

Computational Investigation of a CO2 Conversion Strategy via Diels-Alder Reaction in a Carbon Capture Solvent.

Molecular-level insights into reactive separations are crucial for the design of new conversion pathways of carbon dioxide (CO2). This work explores a postulated pathway that directs CO2 to undergo inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder reactions to produce heterocycles using the CO2 chemically fixed on water-lean solvent molecules. Density functional theory calculations are applied to evaluate the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies of three types of reactants (1,3-butadiene, 1,3-cyclohexadiene, and 1,2,4,5-tetrazine) with various functional substituents. These calculations also

Harnessing Photoexcited-State Pathways in Boron Dipyrromethene for Phototheranostics and Photopolymerization.

Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes are widely recognized for their strong visible-light absorption, high fluorescence, and structural modularity. Beyond fluorescence, molecular engineering can redirect their photoexcited states toward distinct photochemical pathways, expanding their utility in photomedicine and materials chemistry. This Spotlight examines BODIPY photochemistry from this excited-state perspective and connects recent advances in phototheranostics and photopolymerization. In phototherapy, BODIPY excited states can be directed toward triplet-state energy transfer for singlet-oxyge…

Optical control of quantum dot luminescence via photoisomerization of a surface-coordinated, cationic dithienylethene.

Photoisomerization of a coordinating, photochromic dithienylethene bearing a pyridine and a methylpyridinium group was investigated as a means to reversibly modulate the luminescence from CdSe-ZnS core-shell quantum dots. Resonance energy transfer and electron transfer are both plausible quenching mechanisms based on an increase in the spectral donor-acceptor overlap and an anodic shift in the reduction potential accompanying the isomerization reaction of the dithienylethene photoswitch. Photochemical degradation of both the quantum dot and photochromic quencher was observed after repeated cyc…

Concussive and subconcussive brain trauma: the complexity of impact biomechanics and injury risk in contact sport.

Head impacts that transfer mechanical energy to the skull and create brain injuries have unique dynamic responses and brain tissue trauma characteristics. The magnitude of the impact energy and how it is transmitted creates three-dimensional linear and rotational accelerations of the head, resulting in unique strains on brain tissue. Biomechanical investigations of head injuries in contact sports have historically focused on attenuating energy transfer to the skull and brain. Typically, severe life-threatening events are caused by high-energy impact events that result in anatomic damage. Prote…
