Peripartum cardiomyopathy: summary of an international survey on peripartum cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this survey was to assess the evaluation, management, and future recommendations of patients with the diagnosis of peripartum cardiomyopathy and to evaluate the interest in the creation of a prospective database regarding this rare disorder. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 116 surveys were sent to major teaching institutions in the United States (including Puerto Rico), Canada, Crete, and South Korea after a national conference held at the National Institutes of Health regarding peripartum cardiomyopathy. This was an open-ended survey containing 17 specific questions regarding

Potential problems with the random-zero sphygmomanometer.

The random-zero sphygmomanometer is frequently used in epidemiologic and clinical research to increase the reliability and validity of blood pressure readings. However, recent reports have suggested that there is a correlation between the zero values of a random-zero sphygmomanometer and the zero-corrected blood pressure readings obtained. The design of the random-zero sphygmomanometer would suggest that the zero values and zero-corrected blood pressures should be uncorrelated. Hence, residual correlation might be of importance in determining the utility of this device. We have explored this r

Prospective association between depressive symptoms and incident hypertension: Results from the Hispanic community health study/study of Latinos.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research on depressive symptoms with incident hypertension has yielded mixed results, and this relationship has not been studied in a diverse group of Hispanic/Latino adults. METHODS: We studied 5927 Hispanic/Latino adults aged 18-74 years from four U.S. cities who attended baseline (2008-2011) and follow-up (2014-2017) examinations of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos. Baseline depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-10; clinically relevant depressive symptoms were defined as ≥10 points. Blood pressu

Maternal and paternal smoking and offspring antral follicle count in women from an infertility clinic.

BACKGROUND: The ovarian reserve is established in utero, and therefore may be influenced by parental characteristics such as tobacco smoking. However, the epidemiologic literature on parental smoking and adult antral follicle count (AFC) remains conflicted. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Our study included 631 women enrolled in the Environment and Reproductive Health (EARTH) study, a prospective cohort at an academic fertility center between 2005 and 2019. Exposure was assessed by women self-reporting their mother's and father's overall and pregnancy specific smoking status. Outcome was assesse

Social Vulnerability and Disparities in All-Cause Mortality in the United States.

BACKGROUND: People living in areas of lower socioeconomic status experience worse health outcomes. Less is known about how specific measures of area-level socioeconomic influence mortality, and how these effects are modified by race, geography, and gender in the United States. DESIGN: We obtained data on deaths from all causes in the United States from 1999 to 2020 from the Centers for Disease Control Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database. We combined county-level age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) and population counts from the CDC WONDER database with the overall SV

Descriptive analysis to assess seasonal patterns of COVID-19 and influenza in low-income and middle-income countries in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding disease seasonality can help predict the occurrence of outbreaks and inform public health planning. Respiratory diseases typically follow seasonal patterns; however, knowledge regarding the seasonality of COVID-19 and its impact on the seasonality of influenza remains limited. The objective of this study was to provide more evidence to understand the circulation of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, in an endemic scenario to guide potential preventive strategies. DESIGN: In this study, a descriptive analysis was undertaken to describe seasonality trends

Sexual dimorphism of tooth agenesis patterns in non-syndromic oligodontia in Japanese patients.

OBJECTIVE: Wide individual variation observed in tooth agenesis patterns in patients with non-syndromic oligodontia could be affected by sexual dimorphism. Therefore, the present study investigated sex-associated differences in tooth agenesis patterns in patients with non-syndromic oligodontia. DESIGN: Subjects were 108 male (ages 7-46 years) and 184 female (ages 7-43 years) orthodontic patients missing ≥6 permanent teeth, excluding third molars. The number of agenetic teeth per patient, excluding third molars, and the prevalence of agenesis of each tooth type were evaluated using panoramic r

Population-Based Study on the Epidemiology of Ménière's Disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Ménière's disease (MD) is a disorder of the inner ear typically showing recurrent acute episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, and tinnitus. Epidemiologic studies on MD are scarce. We assessed the incidence rates (IRs) of MD and describe the characteristics of MD cases, comparing them to control patients without recorded evidence of MD. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective population-based follow-up study and a nested case-control analysis using data from the UK-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink. METHODS: We identified patients between 18 and 79 years of a

A biomechanical comparison of youth baseball pitches: is the curveball potentially harmful?

BACKGROUND: The curveball has been anecdotally considered as a dangerous pitch among youth pitchers, especially for their ulnar collateral ligaments. No biomechanical studies have been conducted among youth pitchers comparing different types of pitches. HYPOTHESIS: The kinetics of the baseball throw varies significantly between the fastball, curveball, and change-up for youth pitchers. Kinematic and temporal differences are also expected. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Twenty-nine youth baseball pitchers (age, 12.5 +/- 1.7 years) pitched 5 fastballs, 5 curveballs, and 5

Are substance use, abuse and dependence associated with study participation? Predictors of offspring nonparticipation in a twin-family study.

OBJECTIVE: Although epidemiologic studies have reported that problem drinking is associated with nonresponse to surveys, it is unclear whether parents' alcoholism is associated with nonresponse in their offspring. This question is particularly important to family studies of alcoholism. In the current study we constructed a model of offspring nonparticipation in a twin-family design and computed weights to recapture the distribution of offspring alcohol abuse and dependence. METHOD: In 1999, the first wave of a longitudinal study of offspring of alcoholic twins was conducted via telephone inte

Recruitment of healthy adults into a study of overnight sleep monitoring in the home: experience of the Sleep Heart Health Study.

The Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) is a prospective cohort study using participants from several ongoing cardiovascular and respiratory disease research projects to investigate the relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and cardiovascular disease. This study design required unusual and different recruiting techniques to meet the study's enrollment goal of between 6000 and 6600 participants. Individuals were recruited to undergo an overnight home polysomnogram, completion of several questionnaires, and collection of a small amount of physical examination data. This article describes t

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Cardiovascular Disease: State of the Science, Knowledge Gaps, and Research Opportunities.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by a persistent maladaptive reaction after exposure to severe psychological trauma. Traumatic events that may precipitate PTSD include violent personal assaults, natural and human-made disasters, and exposure to military combat or warfare. There is a growing body of evidence for associations of PTSD with major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as hypertension and diabetes, as well as with major CVD outcomes, such as myocardial infarction and heart failure. However, it is unclear whether these associations are causal or con

The effect of iron deficiency and anaemia on women's health.

Iron deficiency and anaemia are global health problems and major causes of morbidity in women. Current definitions of anaemia in women are historic and have been challenged by recent data from observational studies. Menstrual loss, abnormal uterine bleeding and pregnancy put women at risk of developing iron deficiency which can result in severe fatigue, reduced exercise capacity and poor work performance. Iron deficiency and anaemia during pregnancy are associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes, including neurocognitive deficits in children born to iron-deficient mothers. Both iron d
