The epidemiology of pediatric psoriasis: A nationwide cohort study in Taiwan.

Psoriasis can affect individuals of all age groups. While the epidemiology of psoriasis in adults has been extensively studied, there is limited research specifically investigating pediatric cases. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and incidence of skin psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) among pediatric patients in Taiwan. A nationwide cohort of 17 535 patients with psoriatic diseases under the age of 18 was enrolled from the National Health Insurance Research Database for the period 2000-2013, including 16 129 PsO patients and 2022 PsA patients. The age- and sex-standa

Epidemiological Study of Autoimmune Bullous Dermatoses in Northeastern Romania.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune bullous diseases (ABDs) are a rare but significant group of dermatoses that pose great challenges to the treating dermatologist. ABDs are characterized by the presence of tissue-bound and circulating autoantibodies directed against disease-specific target antigens of the skin. Most epidemiological studies have focused on a single ABD. More than that, there are few data about the incidence and prevalence of autoimmune blistering diseases in Romania. METHODS: In this study, between 2015 and 2019, we retrospectively investigated a total of 225 patients with autoimmune bull

Sero-Epidemiological Study of Varicella in the Italian General Population.

The aim of this study was to analyze the seroprevalence of varicella in Italy and to evaluate the impact of varicella vaccination, which has been mandatory for newborns since 2017. The levels of VZV-specific IgG antibodies were determined by the ELISA method in residual serum samples obtained from subjects aged between 6 and 64 years and residing in 13 Italian regions. Overall, 3746 serum samples were collected in the years 2019 and 2020. The overall seroprevalence was 91.6% (89.9% in males and 93.3% in females; p = 0.0002). Seroprevalence showed an increasing trend (p < 0.0001) starting in th

Genomic epidemiology of syphilis in England: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. Since 2012, syphilis rates have risen dramatically in many high-income countries, including England. Although this increase in syphilis prevalence is known to be associated with high-risk sexual activity in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), cases are rising in heterosexual men and women. The transmission dynamics within and between sexual networks of GBMSM and heterosexual people are not well understood. We aimed to investigate if whole genome sequencin

Mothers of children with Down syndrome: a clinical and epidemiological study.

Down syndrome is the main genetic cause of intellectual disability. Many studies describe the clinical characteristics of DS patients; however, few have investigated the clinical profile of mothers who have children with DS. Advanced maternal age (≥ 35 years old) is a risk factor for DS. Although there is an overall increase in pregnancies among women with advanced maternal age, there is still a lack of awareness of the increased risk of aneuploidy. Here, we reported the clinical and epidemiological profile of DS children and their mothers in a public reference hospital in the State of Rio de

Clinical-Epidemiological Study of a Cohort of 35 Patients with Craniosynostosis.

Introduction:Craniosynostosis is a congenital anomaly defined as early ossification of the cranial sutures. It is a rare pathology worldwide, implicitly also in our country, with a prevalence of 1:2100-1:2500. However, it represents a condition with potentially severe complications in terms of patient functionality. At the same time, not much research has been done in this field. Thus, it was considered useful to conduct a study on the epidemiology of craniosynostosis in Bihor county. Objectives: The present study had the following objectives: updating epidemiological data; analysis of the cli

Epidemiological and Molecular Study of Cryptosporidium in Preweaned Calves in Kuwait.

Cryptosporidium is a worldwide enteric protozoan parasite that causes gastrointestinal infection in animals, including humans. The most notable species is Cryptosporidium parvum because of its zoonotic importance; it is also the leading cause of cryptosporidiosis in preweaned calves. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection, investigate the potential risk factors, and use molecular diagnosis to identify the predominant Cryptosporidium spp. in preweaned calves in Kuwait. Of 175 preweaned calves, Cryptosporidium antigens were detected in 58 (

Serological and molecular epidemiological study on swine influenza in Zambia.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) cause highly contagious respiratory diseases in humans and animals. In 2009, a swine-origin pandemic H1N1 IAV, designated A(H1N1)pdm09 virus, spread worldwide, and has since frequently been introduced into pig populations. Since novel reassortant IAVs with pandemic potential may emerge in pigs, surveillance for IAV in pigs is therefore necessary not only for the pig industry but also for public health. However, epidemiological information on IAV infection of pigs in Africa remains sparse. In this study, we collected 246 serum and 605 nasal swab samples from pigs in Z

In the twilight zone: An epidemiological study of sleep-related hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated hallucinations that occur at the onset/offset of sleep (called hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations; HHHs), despite the fact that their prevalence in the general population is reported to be higher than the prevalence of daytime hallucinations. We utilized data from an epidemiological study to explore the prevalence of HHHs in various modalities. We also investigated phenomenological differences between sleep-related (HHHs) and daytime hallucinations in the auditory modality. We hypothesized that individuals with only HHHs would not differ from contro
