Inverse correlation between Alzheimer's disease and cancer: implication for a strong impact of regenerative propensity on neurodegeneration?

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have revealed an inverse epidemiological correlation between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cancer - patients with AD show a reduced risk of cancer, while cancer survivors are less likely to develop AD. These late discoveries in human subjects call for explorative studies to unlock the underlying biological mechanism, but also may shed new light on conceptual interrogation of the principal pathogenic players in AD etiology. DISCUSSION: Here we hypothesize that this negative correlation reflects a rebalance of biosynthetic propensity between body systems under the two

Asbestos Consumption and Malignant Mesothelioma Mortality Trends in the Major User Countries.

BACKGROUND: The causal association between mesothelioma and asbestos exposure is conclusive, and many studies have proved that the trend in asbestos use is a strong predictor of the pattern in mesothelioma cases with an adequate latency time (generally around 30-40 years or more). Recently, a novel approach for predicting malignant pleural mesothelioma, based on asbestos consumption trend and using distributed non-linear models, has been applied. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to analyse trends in asbestos consumption and malignant mesothelioma mortality in the major asbestos-user c

Imported malaria in Cabo Verde (2010-2024): Risks to post-elimination stability.

Cabo Verde was officially certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization (WHO), following sustained public health interventions and strategic malaria elimination efforts. The country's National Strategic Plan (2020-2024) emphasized strengthening epidemiological and entomological surveillance at the archipelago's entry points (e.g., ports and airports), alongside early diagnosis and case investigation to prevent local transmission. However, imported malaria cases remain a persistent threat and challenge to prevent malaria reintroduction to maintain the elimination status. Therefore, th

Notional Spread of Cholera in Haiti Following a Natural Disaster: Considerations for Military and Disaster Relief Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Cholera remains a significant public health threat for many countries, and the severity largely varies by the population and local conditions that drive disease spread, especially in endemic areas prone to natural disasters and flooding. Epidemiological models can provide useful information to military planners for understanding disease spread within populations and the effectiveness of response options for preventing the transmission among deployed and stationed personnel. This study demonstrates the use of epidemiological modeling to understand the dynamics of cholera transmiss…

Dynamic vs. static social networks in models of parasite transmission: predicting Cryptosporidium spread in wild lemurs.

Social networks provide an established tool to implement heterogeneous contact structures in epidemiological models. Dynamic temporal changes in contact structure and ranging behaviour of wildlife may impact disease dynamics. A consensus has yet to emerge, however, concerning the conditions in which network dynamics impact model outcomes, as compared to static approximations that average contact rates over longer time periods. Furthermore, as many pathogens can be transmitted both environmentally and via close contact, it is important to investigate the relative influence of both transmission …

Quantifying Multipollutant Health Impacts Using the Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program-Community Edition (BenMAP-CE): A Case Study in Atlanta, Georgia.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution risk assessments do not generally quantify health impacts using multipollutant risk estimates, but instead use results from single-pollutant or copollutant models. Multipollutant epidemiological models account for pollutant interactions and joint effects but can be computationally complex and data intensive. Risk estimates from multipollutant studies are therefore challenging to implement in the quantification of health impacts. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to conduct a case study using a developmental multipollutant version of the Environmental Benefits Mapping and…

Artificial Neural Network Model of MPox Elimination Strategies.

Our study aims to provide a model of artificial neural networks called "ANN-MPX" that helps to monitor the disease spread and to plan response strategies. It emphasizes three main models, related to disease spread and elimination, namely a popular SIR model, a Force of Infection model and a Force of Elimination model. Our model can be used to predict the success or failure of Mpox elimination efforts in a given region based on epidemiological inputs.

Hyperbolastic growth models: theory and application.

BACKGROUND: Mathematical models describing growth kinetics are very important for predicting many biological phenomena such as tumor volume, speed of disease progression, and determination of an optimal radiation and/or chemotherapy schedule. Growth models such as logistic, Gompertz, Richards, and Weibull have been extensively studied and applied to a wide range of medical and biological studies. We introduce a class of three and four parameter models called "hyperbolastic models" for accurately predicting and analyzing self-limited growth behavior that occurs e.g. in tumors. To illustrate the

Validation of Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment Using Epidemiological Data from Outbreaks of Waterborne Gastrointestinal Disease.

The assumptions underlying quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) are simple and biologically plausible, but QMRA predictions have never been validated for many pathogens. The objective of this study was to validate QMRA predictions against epidemiological measurements from outbreaks of waterborne gastrointestinal disease. I screened 2,000 papers and identified 12 outbreaks with the necessary data: disease rates measured using epidemiological methods and pathogen concentrations measured in the source water. Eight of the 12 outbreaks were caused by Cryptosporidium, three by Giardia, and

Innate immune signaling and Porphyromonas gingivalis-accelerated atherosclerosis.

Periodontal diseases are a group of diseases that lead to erosion of the hard and soft tissues of the periodontium, which, in severe cases, can result in tooth loss. Anecdotal clinical observations have suggested that poor oral health may be associated with poor systemic health; however, only recently have appropriate epidemiological studies been initiated, with defined clinical endpoints of periodontal disease, to address the association of periodontal disease with increased risk for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Although conflicting reports exist, these epidemiological studies

The aetiology of type 1 diabetes: an epidemiological perspective.

Type 1 diabetes is increasing rapidly in many parts of the Western world, most evidently in Scandinavia. A low concordance rate of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus among monozygotic twins clearly indicates that genetic risk factors may be necessary, but are not sufficient for the disease to occur. The strongest genetic risk markers are located in the HLA region of chromosome 6, but these DNA specificities differ in different populations. Risk genes are indicated in other chromosomes of the human genome, suggesting a complex interaction between genes and environment as the cause of the disea

Deciphering dengue fever transmission on higher-order networks.

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Modeling dengue transmission is crucial for control, given its risk to half the world's population. This paper develops a host-to-host transmission model within hypergraphs constructed from simplicial complexes. Necessary conditions for the emergence of Turing instability in dengue dynamical systems naturally coupled on hypergraphs are derived. Furthermore, a multiplex network framework is constructed on hypergraphs by incorporating the influence of information on dengue transmission, and expressi

Dynamics and Numerical Analysis of a Multi-Patch Influenza Transmission Model with Population Migration and Daily Commuting.

Human mobility plays an important role in the disease spatial transmission. In this paper, a multi-patch SEIR Influenza model incorporating long-term population migration and daily commuting was formulated to describe Influenza interregional spreading. Mathematically, the explicit expression for basic reproduction number was derived by the next-generation matrix method, and the globally asymptotically stability of disease free equilibrium and the unique positive equilibrium were rigorously proved. Numerically, taking the end of 2025 influenza epidemic in Shanxi province as an example, the mode

Hyper-exponential growth in an epidemic model: some explicit solutions and their significance.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the ability of epidemics to evolve through the emergence of successive strains of greater infectiousness, which prompted the insight that hyper-exponential growth (HEG) can arise in the development of an epidemic. The phenomenon of HEG has intrigued many researchers, because of some radical differences from exponential growth such as the finite-time singularity. However, the actual mechanism of HEG was usually hidden or needed to be added phenomenologically. Thus, there was little insight into how constraints would be triggered. In this study, we explore an SI

The paradox of neglecting changes in behavior: How standard epidemic models misestimate both transmissibility and final epidemic size.

During epidemic outbreaks, populations adapt their behavior in response to disease burden, fundamentally altering transmission dynamics. Despite this, most compartmental models assume constant contact rates throughout outbreaks. To quantify biases from this assumption, we fitted a baseline SEIRD model with constant transmission and three behavioral variants-incorporating mortality-driven transmission reduction via exponential, rational, and mixed functional forms-to COVID-19 mortality data from 20 selected US locations during the first pandemic wave (March-July 2020). All three behavioral mode

Foundation models for time series forecasting and policy evaluation in infectious disease epidemics.

Epidemic forecasting and public health policy evaluation rely on mathematical models, but traditional approaches struggle in data-limited settings. We evaluated whether transformer-based, foundation Artificial Intelligence models can serve as a new epidemic modeling framework. We tested five models across pathogens and locations, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), chickenpox, dengue. Foundation models demonstrated strong accuracy in short-term forecasts and predicted multiple epidemic waves. They outperformed standard implementations of established models on limited and ir

Evaluating the Reliability of Data-Driven Compartmental Model (SIR or VH) on Dengue Fever for the Ongoing Outbreak in America.

The compartmental epidemiological model is commonly used to study dengue dynamics; some of these models precisely consider the mosquito population, and others indirectly capture its role in disease transmission term. In this article, we have performed a comparative analysis between a simple SIR model and a vector-host interaction model (VH model) by fitting the dengue fever data of the ongoing outbreak in America. Parameter estimations for both models have been performed using the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm, considering the normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) as an optimization functi

Analysis of an HIV/AIDS Model with sexual transmission and travel in a patchy environment.

In this paper, a multi-patch HIV/AIDS epidemic model with heterosexual transmission is formulated to investigate the impact of travel among patches. It is a system of 6 n 2 ordinary differential equations describes HIV/AIDS spread in an environment divided into n patches. We derive the basic reproduction number R 0 . Lower and upper bounds on R 0 are given. We prove that if R 0 < 1 , the disease-free equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable, and if R 0 > 1 , there is at least an endemic equilibrium. We apply the model to three patches in which the disease spreads in a patch and die

Who Should be Controlled? The Role of Asymptomatic Individuals, Isolation and Switching in the Dominant Transmission Route in Classical and Network Epidemic Models.

We introduce two mathematical models for the spread of an SIR-type infectious disease, incorporating direct (person-to-person) and indirect (environment-to-person) transmissions, latent periods, asymptomatic infections, and different isolation rates for exposed, asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals. The first model employs the classical homogeneous mixing approach, while the second uses the edge-based compartmental approach to consider heterogeneity in the number of contacts within the population through a random contact network. Key epidemiological metrics, including the basic reproductio
