Metagenome-based analysis of xenobiotic degradation potential in urban mangrove sediments under chronic anthropogenic impact.

Urban mangrove sediments receive continuous inputs of industrial and domestic pollutants, yet the microbial basis of pollutant transformation in these chronically impacted systems remains insufficiently resolved. This study investigated xenobiotic degradation potential in sediments from two urban mangrove locations along the Mandovi estuary, Goa, India, through reanalysis of previously generated shotgun metagenomic data. The assembled metagenomes showed enrichment of degradation pathways associated with aromatic and aliphatic pollutants commonly linked to urban contamination. A high representa

An assessment of contaminants and benthic condition in the Matagorda Bay system (Texas, USA).

The Matagorda Bay system has suffered a long-term decline in benthic abundance, biomass, and diversity since the 1980's. This study examined sediment contamination to determine if legacy pollutants are degrading sediment quality and are a possible cause for ecosystem degradation. Degradation can be indicated by a decline in benthic integrity (i.e., diversity), decreased survival rates of organisms exposed to sediment, and sediment chemical contaminant concentrations over threshold limits. These methods form the Sediment Quality Triad to assess environmental effects. There were no contaminant c

Lignin phenol abundances and ratios are modulated by their interactions with iron hydroxides in sediments.

Iron hydroxides play a key role in the preservation of organic matter in soils and sediments, yet the specificity and extent of their interactions with lignin-derived phenols-important source indicators for terrestrial organic matter-remain poorly understood in aquatic systems. In this study, we analyzed surface and downcore sediments along the terrestrial-to-marine continuum of the St. Lawrence Estuary and Gulf, as well as from a boreal lake (Lake Brock), to better characterize iron-lignin associations. Using CuO oxidation (lignin) and buffered dithionite (iron), we quantified lignin oxidatio

Long-term assessment of nutrient-induced eutrophication in Xiamen Bay: Implications for integrated watershed-coast management.

Coastal eutrophication, driven by increasing anthropogenic nutrient inputs, represents a major environmental threat to marine ecosystems worldwide. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the spatiotemporal dynamics of eutrophication in Xiamen Bay, a subtropical semi-enclosed coastal system in Southeast China, based on a decadal monitoring dataset (2008-2018) covering spring, summer, and autumn. We applied an adapted version of the HELCOM Eutrophication Assessment Tool (HEAT) to evaluate eutrophication status and identify its key drivers. The results revealed pronounced spatial heterog

Blood UV absorbents in urban breeding herring gulls: Annual environmental conditions, not anthropogenic habitat use, drive exposure.

Urban-adapted wildlife foraging in coastal areas are exposed to mixtures of synthetic contaminants, including ultraviolet absorbents (UVAs), such as benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BZT-UVs) and organic UV filters (UVFs). Herring gulls (Larus argentatus), known for their foraging plasticity, are particularly susceptible to UVA exposure due to their reliance on anthropogenic habitats, including landfills, known as sinks of products containing UVAs. However, the impact of foraging habitat on exposure is unknown. We aimed to investigate this relationship in gulls along the St. Lawrence estuary near

Effects of vessel noise on beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) call type use: ultrasonic communication as an adaptation to noisy environments?

Animal vocalizations can evolve structural features as long-term adaptations to noisy environments. Using such signals, cetaceans could mitigate masking from vessel noise. This study investigates whether beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) use ultrasonic high-frequency burst pulse (HFBP) calls to communicate in noisy conditions. We identified HFBP calls in three populations: St Lawrence Estuary, Eastern High Arctic-Baffin Bay, and Western Hudson Bay. Focusing on the industrialized St Lawrence, we investigated the effects of vessel noise on HFBP call rates compared to other call types. Ultras

Seasonal dynamics of the carbonate system and acidification sensitivity in a river-dominated coastal system: the Northern Yellow Sea, China.

This study investigated the carbonate dynamics in the northern coastal zone of the Northern Yellow Sea adjacent to the Yalu River estuary during two distinct hydrological periods in 2024. During the dry season, seawater dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) ranged narrowly from 1862 μmol kg-1 to 2141 μmol kg-1, while pH ranged from 7.70 to 8.02. In contrast, during the flood season, seawater DIC decreased to 1332-2111 μmol kg-1, with pH exhibiting greater variability from 7.63 to 8.48. End-member mixing modeling revealed that physical mixing was the dominant controlling factor during the dry season

Morphology and phylogeny of a novel Ortholinea (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) species in the neotropical fish Batrachoides surinamensis, Bloch and Schneider, 1801 (Batrachoidiformes: Batrachoididae).

The Brazilian Amazon estuary is a highly dynamic environment, characterized by substantial organic matter input and a rich diversity of fish species that utilize this ecosystem for feeding and reproduction. Despite its ecological relevance, ichthyo-parasitological research in the region remains limited, particularly regarding the diversity of parasitic species within the class Myxozoa. Among the fish species for which parasitological data are still scarce is the Pacamã frogfish, Batrachoides surinamensis (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), a demersal species that feeds on small invertebrates and fish

Isolation of Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio vulnificus from Estuarine Waters, and Genotyping of V. vulnificus Isolates Using Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification.

Bacteria in the genus Vibrio are ubiquitous in estuarine and coastal waters. Some species (including Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio vulnificus) are known human pathogens causing ailments like cholera, diarrhea, or septicemia. Notably, V. vulnificus can also cause a severe systemic infection (known as vibriosis) in eels raised in aquaculture facilities. Water samples were periodically collected from the estuary of the Asahi River, located in the southern part of Okayama City, Japan. These samples were directly plated onto CHROMagar Vibrio plates, and colonies displaying turquoise-blue coloration we

Sampling frequency, load estimation and the disproportionate effect of storms on solute mass flux in rivers.

Riverine discharge (Q) and dissolved concentrations (C) dictate solute mass export from watersheds. Commonly Q is tracked at a much higher frequency than C for most major solutes, leading to the necessity of load estimation algorithms which are often based on sparse data. The result is that the disproportionate effects of short-duration events (e.g., storms) on solute mass fluxes are poorly known. Here we use novel lab-in-the-field instrumentation to compare high temporal-resolution (∼30 min to 7 h) datasets of major ion chemistry collected over a year of continuous monitoring in three watersh

Metagenomic profiling of antibiotic resistance genes in Red Sea brine pools.

Antibiotic resistance (AR) is an alarming global health concern, causing an annual death rate of more than 35,000 deaths in the US. AR is a natural phenomenon, reported in several pristine environments. In this study, we report AR in pristine Red Sea deep brine pools. Antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) were detected for several drug classes with tetracycline and macrolide resistance being the most abundant. As expected, ARGs abundance increased in accordance with the level of human impact with pristine Red Sea samples having the lowest mean ARG level followed by estuary samples, while activ

The screening and prioritization of contaminants of emerging concern in the marine environment based on multiple biological response measures.

There is ample evidence that a range of anthropogenic chemicals occur in the aquatic environment, some of which have the potential to cause harm. Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) are a subset of anthropogenic compounds that are poorly characterized in terms of effects and occurrences, and that are generally unregulated. Due to the sheer number of chemicals used, it is necessary to identify and prioritize those that may cause biological impacts. A key challenge of doing so is the lack of traditional ecotoxicological information. The utilization of in vitro exposure-response studies or be

Emerging harmful algal bloom species over the last four decades in China.

The first recorded micro-algae bloom in Chinese coastal waters dates back to 1933 and was caused by a mixture of Noctiluca scintillans and Skeletonema costatum sensu lato along the Zhejiang coast (the East China Sea). While well-documented harmful algal blooms (HABs) appeared to be extremely scarce from the 1950s to 1990, both the frequency and intensity have been reportedly increasing since 1990. Among them, the fish-killing HABs, mainly caused by Karenia mikimotoi, Karlodinium digitatum, Karlodinium veneficum, Margalefidinium polykrikoides, and Heterocapsa spp., have intensified. Karenia mik

Metal pollution in biotic and abiotic samples of the Büyük Menderes River, Turkey.

The Büyük Menderes River (BMR) is one of the largest rivers in Turkey. This river irrigates efficient farmlands and includes tributaries of other rivers and streams and many populated towns within its limits in the Ege region. Both the estuary and Işıklı Lake serve as a sanctuary for various waterbirds. Therefore, the BMR plays a critical role both for the inhabitants and for the ecosystem organisms in its environs. In the present study, we analyzed levels of metals including iron, barium, zinc, vanadium, cobalt, chromium, cadmium, copper, nickel, aluminum, arsenic, manganese, antimony, silver

Skewed distribution of hypothyroidism in the coastal communities of Newfoundland, Canada.

Several studies published in the recent past have shown that rising levels of thyroid disrupting chemicals (TDCs) in the environment affect thyroid function in humans. These TDCs are the anthropogenic organic compounds that enter the human body mostly by ingestion and may trigger autoimmune thyroiditis, the most common cause of hypothyroidism. The studies also show the presence of high levels of TDCs in marine animals; therefore, consumption of contaminated seafood might trigger hypothyroidism. So far, there is no readily available population-based data, showing the regional distribution of hy

Impairment of the bacterial biofilm stability by triclosan.

The accumulation of the widely-used antibacterial and antifungal compound triclosan (TCS) in freshwaters raises concerns about the impact of this harmful chemical on the biofilms that are the dominant life style of microorganisms in aquatic systems. However, investigations to-date rarely go beyond effects at the cellular, physiological or morphological level. The present paper focuses on bacterial biofilms addressing the possible chemical impairment of their functionality, while also examining their substratum stabilization potential as one example of an important ecosystem service.
